I think the key might be to "keep it simple". I don't see those Civic wheels as looking good in 20 or more years.

20 or so years ago, this kind of thing was also big in the aftermarket world - definitely something of the period now, hasn't exactly stood the test of time:

Fin, I like all of them, except the Benz. those IMO are hideous, and scream 1980s

The wheels on the MB look 80s because the basic design dates from then. They were available for well over a decade, and fitted on new cars well into the 2000s. They remain popular, and the VW cult has embraced them too.

    These scream 80s:

I also really dislike the phone dial GTI wheels.

I do like the originals though.

Yes, the rims I pictured were on a Rav or something--mini SUV?

In the parking lot at work, a new Mini Countryman. It isn't so mini.

My '90 GTI had these wheels, all of 14" in size, which were if nothing else easy to keep clean.

I like those BBS rims, ironic they looked good on bMWs and Lincolns at virtually the same time!

I assume the MB knock-off hub is on a Rudge wheel from a 300SL.

Those BBS wheels definitely work on some cars, but they are very much of an era. On an E30 or LSC, definitely.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,594
Sounds right. Those try really hard to be trendy and hip to the beige demographic who is their main purchaser.

To be fair, MB has similar "broken up" wheels available on a couple SUV/CUV things, and this petal wheel is available on cars, at least in Europe - it would be a deal breaker for me:

I like a continuous edge, with the spokes ending inside the edge. Also, not fond of twists. I like my spokes straight.

Also, odd numbers of spokes. Don't like 6 or 8 spoke wheels.

I think that covers it, for me.. ;)

Hated the wheels on my '15 Golf and after a month of problems with them, they switched out the wrong size, ended up with 17" ones from a Jetta SEL. Joda rims I think they are called. They gave me 5 minutes to pick from 2 different rim styles and it was very difficult really as I really liked both. Mine have 15 spokes instead of the 10 I could've gotten and think I made the right decision. But when I see what I gave up, I have second thoughts. Guess it's true, the grass is always greener!
To be honest, I bought on eBay rims for my '06 Civic LX and they came from a California '05 Civic SI. Since it was a 16" Honda wheel, I knew the offset would work which, it did. Just had to secure new lug nuts and I was on my way. Made the car look so much better to.

Saw a new unplated A3, hadn't noticed these have kind of sequential rear turn signals. Now that I think about it, maybe because these things aren't the most frequent user of signals B)

    Swiped them from Ford B)

First time I've seen a CT6. It was white and looked vaguely Cadillac'ish from the back.

I don't know if I've seen a CT6, unfortunately they don't look that different from the XTS, which doesn't get (or earn) much respect.

A4. Pretty loaded S line (48K sticker). Fantastic interior. Probably even better all lit up!

Saw a dark blue X today, the very fast 100K+ egg shaped minivan with the best tax break possible.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I just saw an SUV comparison article (Motor Trend I believe) between a Lexus 300, Lincoln MKX and the new Mercedes (can't remember it's nomenclature). Anyway I was amazed looking at the spec's when I saw the MB had those lousy Bridgestone Dueler tires I've gotten stuck with on several new (but much lower priced) vehicles. :s

Today spotted a Chevy SS and a GLE coupe.

A couple new Porsche Targas in the past day, money floating around.
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,402
I saw a newish Targa here yesterday, which means someone is really raking it in as they are quite rare in these parts. Sort of an orangey metallic color.

I could speculate on local ownership, but I will just offend :) One I saw was a similar color. Not the best. They look pretty good in white. I want to see how that top assembly functions in 20 years.

Saw an Aston Martin V12 Vantage in a parking lot near where I live. Hard to tell if brand new, but I think it was very late model. Questionably parked, dumb thing hanging from the rear view mirror, no front plate (I doubt that law is enforced equally or consistently here).

    Saw another electric Soul today.

    Saw a Polaris Slingshot today.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Are those the ones that Costco is selling at some locations?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,594
Not sure. I googled it, Polaris is in the Costco purchase thing, so probably. The one I go usually has a Kawasaki bike of various types, and a mainstream car, Hyundai comes to mind.

Friend of mine spotted one at the Clarkston Washington Costco a week ago and took a pic of it. He just said it was a Polaris.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,594
That'd be the one. The one I saw was kind of a yellow-orange, I think.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,594
Dark red Model X, no front plate because of course.

2016 BMW i3. Having seen one before I didn't actually recoil in horror---in fact I was fascinated with its weirdness. Technically it's a very interesting car, especially in construction; but aesthetically, it the automotive version of a very sour pickle---some people will love 'em, but most won't.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,594
I think I might have seen a Ferrari 488 Spider today.
  • tifightertifighter Member Posts: 3,807
i3 is pretty fun to drive. You know you want to try it...

fin - you should see a bunch of these in Seattle. And shifty - you should be seeing a lot of 'em in the Bay area.

Yep, this is greenieland. Can't turn around here without seeing a Leaf, Prius, or in Bellevue, a Tesla. I am sure more will come.

I have seen a couple of the new MB small vans lately, and saw a new Volt today.

Haven't noticed any but maybe I wasn't looking too closely. I did price one out with a few modest options and that came to $33,400 for the base trim level. Not cheap considering you could pick up a used Nissan Leaf with similar EV range for about 1/3rd the price.

Loaded up with highest trim level and options brought the MSRP to $38,600.

    Ouch!

  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
A well equipped Volt is a bit over $40,000. Before the $7,500 tax credit.

FWIW, there is $12500 in rebates and incentives if you lease. At least there is in WA for May. With those numbers, I had to take a look.
