That Galaxie looks nice (though I don't care for the wheels), but remember it is a much bigger and softer car than what you've been looking at.

I admire how tenacious and determined you are in undertaking this but I think you really should visit one of these events in person.

I always looked at collector car auctions and ownership as "if you have to ask, you can't afford it." Possibly from watching the Barrett-Jackson auction on TV.

Alright CCBAers, I need some vehicle suggestions. A friend's wife (who happens to be 38 weeks pregnant) was in an accident last week in her 2012 Murano SL and the at-fault party's insurance company totaled it. I suspect they're going to give them $15-$17k for it, but we shall see.

What are extremely safe, AWD, SUV options that either used would be under $30k CPO or under $400/month on a lease? They'd like something on the luxury side of things.

Off the top of my head I'm thinking CPO BMW X3, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, Acura RDX. I'm sure I'm missing more?

How big? Flex pretty much checks all those boxes. It isn't "luxury" in name, but it isn't hard to get a trim that feels pretty darn luxurious. And, yes, you can go under 30K and CPO.

I have a customer who is into cars and is definitely a Chronic Car Looker.  He's got a CPO Cayenne Diesel with 85K miles that he absolutely LOVES!  His wife drives a GL 450 MB that she leased.  He recently picked up a gorgeous BMW 650i Grand Coupe ///M Sport off lease trader.  He sends me a text as I'm texting him about my Infiniti:

"Check out my Dad's new garage queen"

My customer's Dad has the financial means we all yearn for to feed our CCBA habit.  Before this 911 Turbo S, he had a Ferrari California, and before that a Bentley Continental Super Sport that he traded for the Ferrari because it was depreciating too much.

Tonight, I saw a 2014 Forester on CL down in Anchorage for which the seller wanted $17K. Posted six days ago.

It was a manual trans, 25K miles, X Premium. Basically the same features as our 2010, only this one is current gen (e.g., it's ugly). But, seller wanted $17K for it! I was pretty sure that was a good price, so I did some looking, and price guides were saying $19K+. It's even a good price for a bone stock base trim, which this is not, so I thought I would inquire.

    Already sold. LOL Shocker!

To report some good news, VW was having trouble ordering and acquiring the new Sportwagen/Alltrack windshield sunshades, so after having to follow up a couple times, they just gave me the one that finally came in today by shipment for free. These manufacturer model specific sunshades are made about 25X better and 25X more durable than what you'll find at a department store like Walmart.

Anyhoo, here is a word of warning for anyone considering this. Mecum requires a deposit up front of 20% of what you plan to spend if you are a phone bidder. However, after consideration, I decided to send the full amount up front because I could not figure out how I'd pay in time should I win. Sure, I could go through the trouble of a wire transfer, but there are not inconsiderable fees involved with that (Mecum charges $100 on their end plus whatever I'd have to pay on my end).

After the auction was over, I inquired as to how I get my check back. I did not yet realize they cashed it. So then I'm told they have up to 30 days from auction end to send me my refund! OUCH!! Guess what I won't be doing ever again!

That strikes me as a rather odd business practice and certainly very customer-unfriendly. I wonder if that is standard practice for all of those auction houses?

So a bit of a sad story for me, I sold the Pathfinder last weekend to my ex's stepfather. I already know I made a mistake letting it go, but with the separation and move to Denver I could only take one car and foolishly decided to keep the Touareg.

I get a little solace in knowing he'll appreciate it and take care of it but in hindsight I should have dumped the Touareg and taken the Pathfinder with me.

Sometimes it is better to minimize the headache. IIRC, the Touareg is a lease, so it would have been a lot more trouble to dispose of it (and not lose a bundle in the process).

At least you know where it is so, if your lamentations persist and situation changes, perhaps you can get it back down the road. ;)

I really wish I had kept the Pathfinder. I love the Touareg but the transmission slipping is still there and it annoys me.

Regardless of how the Touareg performs I regret selling the Pathfinder.

Huh. That is shockingly and suspiciously cheap. I know shifty says Hagerty can be low, and they say $20k is a #4 of one of these. If this is a #2 like he seems to claim, it should be a $45k car according to them.

Thanks @jpp5862! Best of luck to you with your move to Denver. Funny, I didn't mean to line the cars up like that. Last night while I am lying on the couch, half alseep, my wife (who is also half asleep) says to me: "My truck needs gas." So I get my shoes on, go outside, and fire up the Pilot. 5 miles to empty. Not too bad since the gas station is about 3 1/2 miles away and I've made it there from my house with 0 miles to empty. Swipe the card & fill er up. The Infiniti was in the middle of the driveway, so I put the Pilot closest to the house. I put the Prelude in the garage when we went away skiing last weekend and haven't driven it since. I decided to move it out of the garage this AM because we are supposed to get torrential rain over the next week or so (great, just what I need. More water). I just back it out and swung it into the spot where it is.

Ha! That's the playhouse/shed. I know you are joking! I wish I could just reseal the driveway, but it is completely shot. It needs to be ripped up and redone. I got a quote from someone who I know will do the job correctly. $11,000. That's not in the budget this year after spending close to $40K on the basement this past winter.

Might be able to save some big bucks if you are willing to just overlay 3" of asphalt over that old asphalt. Probably want redwood headers around it though for the edges.

I thought it seemed cheap for what was claimed to be done to it.

I find those cars odd. I like the exterior styling, and even like the laser stripe, but the interior design/instrument panel and materials let them down IMO. Look at the door panels, so plain. On that one, the console is black, which seems wrong to me. Also the rear taillight panel should not be totally black I suspect. And why leave the front drums on? The undercarriage might be OK but the pics are somewhat vague to my eye.

So not only are the cars themselves odd, but that ad is even more odd.

Forget transportation. Denver is going to have a water crisis sooner than later. Average rainfall in Denver is 13 inches. Average rainfall in Phoenix is 7 inches. Do the math. Not a lot of slack there.

Price is about market correct for a 351 engine. Hagerty's prices are no doubt for the 429 CJ.

True enough - there is a lot of haggling over water rights in the state. There is a new reservoir close to my house that is filling up, slowly. Will take some of the pressure off the current water resources. And, water usage restrictions are becoming the norm, rather than the exception, for many Front Range cities.

@jpp5862 is moving into an apartment, so he won't have to worry about those issues. But, I believe he's limited to just one parking spot (at a cost), so the Nissan or the VW had to go before he got here.

Though, now that I think about it, perhaps @breld could have stashed it at the parking garage at his work. I know he keeps at least one car there full time.

Hopefully they won't take the Southern California approach which is to ignore or exacerbate the problem (bike lanes, no new freeways except for overpriced toll lanes, etc.) in an effort to grind those who refuse to use mass transit into dust.
