Extremely cool! Saw a late 50's Impala at the Mecum auctions that I'd kill to have, up to date enough that it could be used as a daily driver. And I can afford it to but unlike your wife, mine won't hear of it. But eventually, I will wear her down as I really want a fun toy to start my next retirement with. As much as I like Mopar stuff, I really dig the late 50's GM iron...Cadillac, Pontiac, Chevy, Buick or Oldsmobile, it doesn't really matter. Owning one of those would just rock my world.

Nope, no inspector. I'm taking a big risk. But I feel it was a good enough buy that I won't be TOO hurt by it. It has room where I can make improvements and increase the value of it rather than just flushing money down the oil drain.

OF, I like a great number of vehicles from about 1948 through 73. I do gravitate more toward 48-54 than 55-63, though. Not much of a fins person at the moment. However, my son was far more partial to the late 60s and some early 70s stuff. Said the 50s and 40s were "too old."

Don't know if motorcycles count, but may have a punch sometime this week. A bike is one of the few toys I haven't owned so at 47, figured why not. The back story is my neighbor who just got his late dad's '81 Honda CB400 running after having sat for over 10 years, and I've been having a blast taking that out. With a built in riding partner, I've been getting the itch to pick up one of my own. Nothing fancy, I'll likely end up with a mid 2000s Honda Shadow 750 for around 2 grand give or take. I've been encouraged by the number of clean specimens I've come across so far. I'm already signed up for my motorcycle safety class this weekend.

I think there are at least a few riders in here. Any advice for a first-time bike owner is appreciated!

That's a good bike. I HIGHLY suggest as much private parking lot riding time as you can muster, in addition to street time on residential side streets before heading out to the 4/6 lanes and interstates.

    Have fun! Post pics.

Be careful out there! Not long ago I was really wanting a bike, and I still want a vintage sportbike or maybe a hypermotard, but every day I am on the road here, the less I am feeling the urge to ride in normal traffic. So many close calls, so many distracted idiots, so little enforcement. In this area of dense traffic and oblivious drivers, one might need to take it to the track to avoid Russian roulette.

Have fun at the MSF course too, they are really a good investment, inexpensive and fun.

@graphicguy and @fintail - agree 100% with both of you. This is strictly a recreational gig. Riding will be in neighborhoods and on secondary country roads when traffic is light. I don't envision ever getting on the interstate or toll roads. If that day ever does come it will be way down the road and only after I've become an experienced enough driver to do so.

    Thanks, folks.

For those who aren't familiar with the car, this big Dodge was a beast in its day, running to 60mph in a tested 5.7 secs (which can probably drop significantly with modern tires, suspension, intake/exhaust, and something shorter than the stock 3.38 rear diff gearing). It is a mere 5 inches shorter than my wife's T&C and weighs a hefty 3700 lbs. I believe fuel mileage to be in the single digits.

Browsing VW dealer inventory and advertised discounts. $4-5k off new GTIs makes a 2017 GTI Sport for around $25k a killer deal in my book.

I've been noticing a growing inventory of Golf Rs on the lots lately, so I suppose it's not all that surprising that this dealer is now advertising significant discounts:

Huh. Only $2500 off on truecar around me.

But when I check a local dealer, they are also showing $4995 off GTIs and $5k and change off the cheapest Jettas. Meaning you can get a new 1.4T Jetta for $15k. Heck of a deal.

Motorcycle riding is considerably more physically demanding than driving a car and also requires a good deal more focus and attention. The safety course will teach you all you have to know--the rest comes from experience.

There are a fair number of knuckleheads out there on motorcycles who are riding well beyond their competence level and well beyond a sane level of risk--- and for that reason I stay away from other bikes on the road and usually decline to ride in "packs" with other riders. One riding buddy is plenty.

Best advice? Always be watching the road 100 feet ahead of you--don't be looking just over your handlebars.

One of the reasons I don't want my daughter to buy out the lease on the sport a year from now. Though I'll be getting real values when the time comes, will likely be much smarter to buy new if she wants another VW. Though I expect we switch brands.

That's good advice to look far ahead regardless of what you are driving. Looking ahead is one of the most important fundamental traits of a good driver. You can often anticipate bad drivers making ill-advised maneuvers before they execute them.

As to the Golf R, that is one heck of an automobile for under $38K! As well as the GTI Sport for $25K.

The GTI Sport is really the value buy - performance package and xenons for $25k is a bargain.

Certainly the law of diminishing returns applies to performance cars. For example, you can get an 8 second 0-60 car for pretty cheap, but a 4 second car will certainly cost you significantly more than twice as much.

You can find a car that can pull .7 G's with ease, but you can't find one that can pull 1.4 G's. Incremental improvements in performance are costly, and it all depends how much you value them.

People in the Audi club were surprised how I was able to keep up with the modded S4's and R8 (for the most part) on public roads with the loaner A3. I told them quattro, 2.0T, and light chassis combined with my extensive A3 experience makes it doable.

Now the A3 is a momentum car, whereas the R8 just blasts off after a sharp corner. No, I wasn't keeping up exiting turns :open_mouth:

Yeah, the GTI is creeping back in as a candidate for my cheaper fun car. Just hard to ignore the value there. That dealership is advertising the GTI Sport (manual of course), for $24,770.

I'd be happy to go used, but virtually all the MK7 GTIs are listed at $20k +. And I'd want to go with at least a 2016 model year, to get over the "first year" hump, and gain carplay.

We'll see - much more practical than a Miata, but boy do I have a yearning for that RF model.

@qbrozen - Good luck with the Coronet! Its a great looking example of a 50 year old car. A customer of mine is a Mopar Junkie. He said the 440 is a much more durable motor than the "more desirable" 426 Hemi (which he says produces more torque, but has problems throwing rods through the block). He also said the TorqueFlight Automatic is the best automatic produced during the muscle car era.

    Affordable Auto Transport.
I had slightly cheaper quotes, but this was the one the seller has used on a regular basis for the past few years, so I figured an extra $50 for one that he trusts and has had success with is smart money. Plus, of course, they'd be more willing to please their regular customer than a 1-time user like myself.
