OK. All the Jetta haters, you might have won (subject of course to the $s I get next week). Looked at options, ran some options past the princess, and have a new Plan A.

The 2018 version of the elantra sport has better equipment packages. The base model now has moonroof, BLIS and proximity key. The key options for us (along with carplay). For about the base price of the 2017 model without most of that. So no need to add the premium package (basically navi, and fancier stereo, which we can live without, particularly navi with Carplay on board).

so will work with the Hyundai dealer to find a car, and work a deal. If the monthly nut is close to the Jetta, will go with the Elantra. A major plus is my last payment and the disposition fee disappear. whether I get before the lease ends, or shortly after. So time for them to find my car.

I love when a plan comes together.

Thanks all.. Don't know if you can tell from the pictures, but that's a metallic white, and it's better in person. (Mineral White). Saddle Brown interior, that also looks better in person.

Wife's first choice in color combo, which almost never happens, so that's a big bonus. Ticked every box, plus Blind spot, lane daparture and surround view camera that we weren't really looking for. Also, 19" wheels, that we were definitely not looking for (18" standard).

It's a service loaner with 4400 miles. CPO Elite with an extra year of warranty. Only been in service for 5 months, so 4yrs, 7mo of warranty.

    this a buy or lease?

Maybe next year I can convince the wife to trade the RDX in on something newer. My best bet I think is if Acura releases a redesigned RDX!

I was thinking retail purchase price. No doubt few if any dealers out there would pay 15K for it, too much Russian roulette involved in something like that.

The bid IMO is fair as is. $15K is all the money if you're a smart buyer, what with this mileage and year. Beyond that, I would buy an extension for my 10-foot pole.

Nah, I think $15K is actually a tad *over* retail. The miles are a killer. You'd have to be blind and in love, which is not one of my many faults when it comes to cars. But hey, it's their money. I'm not trying to be a Blue Book [non-permissible content removed].

I think you can get up to $58K on a 28i, though that would be rare. $52K is about the lowest, to get everything she wanted. I tried to talk her into an X1, but she can't get the old model out of her head. They had some pretty good deals on those.

    We bought it. 0%/72mo. financing.
$1500 X3 loyalty rebate (just had to own an X3, to qualify)
$1000 finance rebate (they give you $1000 to take 0%. Dumb)

Ended up about $800 over my optimum price, but the trade was always a big variable. Not sure this was the best move, financially, but she got exactly what she wanted, and that counts for a lot. At least she is set for 5+ years. Had the last one for 4 years, 5 months, and it was two years old when we got it.

$9400 trade, after some serious crying on my part. @qbrozen pegged it at $9500, in August. Their first number was $8500.

actually, I did the same 5 years back, getting sucked in to going over budget on the RDX for the wife. She still likes it, and has no desire to move on to something new, so in the long run, could be cheaper than if I had gotten something more budget friendly, but had to replace it sooner.

Blue Book can be kind of funny, yeah.

There's one 05 E55 wagon on Autotrader right now, and they want 25K for it, with 121K miles on it. Of course, that's hilarious, but I suspect something closer to 20K would be real world.

Finally getting caught up after a day of binge watching TV.

@kyfdx - congrats on the punch.

@stickguy - I moved in the opposite direction that you're looking to go. I had the 2013 E-GT which got traded in for the 2016 Jetta SE with the 1.4T.

You should drive the E-GT to see how it feels. My E-GT had the 148HP 1.8L, and the extra torque of the 1.4T is really noticeable in the Jetta.

But, feature wise, really hard to beat Hyundai, no question.

    Have you considered the Forte5?

Will I be seeing you in the relevant lease threads asking questions?

The turbo power is a definite advantage that the Jetta has over the Elantra. The new Elantra has a 2.0 engine—but it has significantly less torque than the Jetta. For this reason, the Jetta may well be more fun to drive, which stickguy and his daughter should take into account. Even though Motor Trend is somewhat mixed on the Jetta, they do like the engine. Maybe the Jetta's turbo power is more important than the other qualities that the Elantra may have.

well, let me clarify (and no, I am not getting a Clarify!)

I have driven the Elantra GT. Do like it, The 2.0 in that makes about 162 HP (20 more I think than the 2.0 in the sedan). It is a nice car, but quite a bit more money.

what I am actually looking at is the Elantra sedan sport, with the 201 HP turbo. Going from the 1.8t VW to a base motor Elantra was never going to fly. So a good compromise of performance, stuff, and (hopefully) cheap. Daughter, who gets it next June, likes it too (we have driven one).

What helps is that they reconfigured the equipment levels for 2018, so the base sport now has everything we need standard. No need to add an expensive premium package to it. I would consider a killer lease on a leftover 2017 with the extra goodies on it, but they are actually in very thin supply.

I already had initial discussion with the Hyundai internet lady, and should be hearing Monday from someone with detailed pricing. And should be getting VW numbers too, so will have a good idea where we stand.

at least with the Hyundai, I can wait a couple of months (well, 6 weeks) if needed, and just drive into any Hyundai dealer before my lease is up and just swap out with no fees involved.

Looking at the specs page of the Elantra Sport with the 1.6 turbo, it turns out it has about the same amount of power as a Civic Si—and even more torque. And I assume it runs on regular, unlike the Civic Si? Elantra Sport seems very nicely equipped too—moonroof, blind spot monitoring, heated sport seats, XM, upgraded suspension, etc. I like the alloy wheels too. Looks sharp imho. And the Redline guy really liked how it performs and handles. Will be more $ than a Jetta, but I hope not much more. And if the deal doesn't work out, you can always go back to the Jetta, which is a good car for the money.

Given the caveat that I actually haven't driven one, I would go with the Elantra Sport over any Jetta short of, perhaps, the GLI. It's a fresh design, inside and out, and like @benjaminh points out, the reviews have been positive. Big picture, it sounds like that while Hyundai isn't necessarily encroaching into GTI, Si and ST levels yet, they are getting ever so closer.

Combine that with the presumably simpler transaction with trading out of one Hyundai lease into another, I'd be very excited for you to get into one.

Heck, I'd consider it for my stepdaughter's vehicle to replace her own Jetta sport. You could start a trend!

you guys are making me feel better about the latest plan. Heck, I might like this one enough to just keep it! Or will pass it along and get the GT for myself instead.

Waiting to hear back Monday from the not too far away guy I got my Sonata through (easiest place to swap it out since I also got the protection plan through them) about price and availability, since we want a specific color (though there are only about 5 max to choose from, all have same interior, and just 1 option package which will not likely be that common)

I actually found the exact car in Connecticut (while searching online for pictures to show the wife, who actually liked it too), so shot them a "send me an Eprice" request just for the heck of it.

If the local guy gives me a number I like, will just tell him to find what we want and let me know when to come pick it up. Or can wait for October or November programs, hoping they get better!

pretty thorough review there. nothing to not make me want one! Also answered another question, which is if I get the Elantra GT at some point, it will definitely be the Sport model. About the only negative is the dark interior. Stuff like not holding gears at redline is irrelevant to me.

Great X3 there, congrats. Liking an X1 for myself even more now though did find a nice blue over beige 328i at the local BMW store. Getting an X1 would solve my not having a hatch issue and seems more and more CPO models are coming into the local dealer. For some reason, I'm really being drawn to a BMW more and more every day. And if I time it right, could just work.

Not sure how well mine will take it either as she doesn’t get the car thing like we do. Right now, the only vehicle I’d trade my Golf for right now is an X1 or a 328i/320i, if I could, I’d go test drive that blue one I found or a comparable X1 and just do it. But the timing just isn’t right with the wedding coming up and after all the Irma stuff. Just not the right time for a new vehicle. But I’m patient and can wait a bit because when the time comes, I’ll find the perfect vehicle and jump on it. And if I can find one with 0% financing, that’ll just be icing on the cake!!!
Timing is just so off right now. Anyways, enjoy driving my Golf so why not just keep it a bit longer and get something new once I retire again. Works for me at this juncture.
