I may have missed it, but what color interior with the white exterior? Can you get something besides black?

As with the exterior of the model T at one point, I think for the interior of the Elantra Sport you can get any color you want—as long as it is black.

Yes, I broke my no black interior rule. This one did not seem too bad. Maybe it was the red accents and metal trim? Or the nice bright screens. Or I just didn't care. But the white exterior makes a difference, and it does have a moonroof (no pano this time, but regular is OK with me).

this would be the car (color and trim level) other than not being the stick:

That is a sharp looking ride, stick.

I sat in the new Elantra at the auto show last year, and was pretty impressed with it.

Now, with the Sport trim, I'm very interested. Looks like a lot of bang for the buck.

I like the integrated screen, rather than the "tablet on the dash" look.

You got everything you wanted, for a reasonable price. Be interested in your thoughts on the DSG, after you've lived with it for a while.

Very impressive vehicle and outstanding bang for the buck! Ya did real good here!!! Now can actually see one of these on my side of the garage in a few years. If it drives as good as it looks, it's a winner!! Really love the interior as it's a bit fancier than the SE model that we drive at work.
When I'm ready, will look at the hatch also, the one you also liked. But after seeing the pictures of the 2018 Golf SEL, am very interested to see it for real. If I did another Golf, that would be the one I'd get as I like the extras it comes with plus love the exterior the most. The little changes have caught my eye.

Seats are really good. Perfect sport seats. My only issue with this car was seats not being power, but after a few test drives was ok with it. I get just enough tilt. I really liked the GT version, same seats but power. They were perfect. But that was way more expensive.

That as to be underrated. Real world I would expect much better. The AT is rated at 26/33, and I would be shocked to not beat that on a long highway run.

Yes the MT is way lower. The one salesguy swears he took his DSG model on a trip to Ohio, and averaged over 40! I will find out I guess first trip I get to take with it. Might have to find someplace to go.

Take that with a grain of salt imho. Getting c. 3 mpg over the epa highway rating (which I can sometimes do with my Accord) seems plausible, but 7 mpg? Hmmm. My guess is what he's talking about is under 65 mph without AC. I can get as much as 42 driving that way as well. But driving closer to 75 with the AC or defroster on, I'd say over 40 isn't likely. But 36 or so is plenty good enough for a little turbo sports car like that imho. Right now it being fall you won't need AC, and so maybe you will get around 40. In any case, let us know.

Doing some research on the 2018 Buick Encore and a very nice vehicle to be honest. Perfect size for me, about the same price as a loaded Golf, like the looks. Drove a 2016 and liked it to be honest. Will be on the short list when I do start looking. Don't see that many on the road, a good thing, and think one could get the price down a bit buying at the right time. VW's new longer warranty could impact sales I think if in fact VW does follow through.
Think I am just itchy for some new wheels to be honest which of course makes no logical sense but we're not logical folks in here. But will definitely wait till all the '18's are out to even take a test drive. If I could honestly get a good deal trading mine and a certain cash payment financed at 0%, could work. Just need the perfect vehicle with the perfect numbers!!

Sport and gas mileage really don't mix. I've seen Teslas dragged, but not taken to the track where they have to turn and go more than 1/8th mile.

I thought I might have been behind @stickguy tonight as there was a white Elantra Sport in front of me getting on the NJ Turnpike north out of Philly, but then I remembered your car won't be in until this weekend.

Ended up up with a new Malibu LT for a rental, although disappointed in National this time as we got to the emerald aisle and the sole car in the big section was a Jeep Patriot. That was a hell no. My wife asked what was wrong with it (vs waiting for something else to come out of the car wash) and I replied, it's a Jeep Patriot. Lady came out and said just take anything in the executive aisle, but that was odd with just a couple Malibus and a slew of old style Grand Caravans. Those would normally be in the emerald aisle anyway. Malibu is just like other recent GM rentals I've had, with the Envision coming to mind. Very smooth, quiet and comfy and great electronics but barely adequate with the base motor, in this case the 1.5 turbo. I'd like to sample a 2.0 turbo.

Ha! I drove this road nearly two weeks ago-

It is very twisty. I did not go slow. I rarely got out of third gear. And I still got 34 MPG.

Edit - not that an 86 is actually fast.

I'm averaging a tick over 26 mpg with my 2 Series; I see 31 mpg or better on the road if I keep it below 75 mph. Considering the performance I'm more than happy with the fuel economy.

On open highway runs in the 70ish average range, our RDX can get 30-31. For a big V6 blocky CUV with AWD, that is pretty impressive. I think the VCM really does work. I have played around and was able to keep it in cylinder deactivation mode to about 77mph.

Sucks around town though in short hops with my leadfoot wife.

After the Hyundai mpg scandal, I think they've become cautious and rigorous about the way they test. Probably most of the time you'll be able to beat the epa numbers by a little bit....

For those who don't recall, here's the story from a few years ago....

"Hyundai, Kia agree to $350M U.S. settlement over inflated mileage claims
    November 3, 2014
    Ryan Beene

    http://www.autonews.com/article/20141103/OEM11/141109980/hyundai-kia-agree-to-$350m-u.s.-settlement-over-inflated-mileage

....Hyundai and Kia used “cherry-picked” data and conducted testing in ways “that did not reflect good engineering judgement” that ultimately led to artificially high fuel economy ratings for most of its lineup at the time in question, according to the DOJ’s statement.

Sam Hirsch, acting assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, said during the press conference that the investigation uncovered a series of flawed practices. He said Hyundai and Kia submitted the best fuel economy data to the EPA for greenhouse has compliance, rather than using average test results.

Hyundai and Kia’s testing was done at temperatures where fuel economy was at its best, he said. The companies also used the wrong-sized tires and tested vehicles that were aided by a tailwind, but failed to turn cars around and measure the effects of a headwind, Hirsch said...."

    I've been invited to upgrade!

Got an email from our Subaru dealer this morning informing me I could upgrade our 2015 Outback 3.6R to a 2017 Outback 3.6R and actually lower our payment!

Well, let's see. The current loan had a few thousand of negative equity rolled in from the CX-7, and it includes both GAP and an extended warranty (wife wanted it for piece of mind).

I'll guess that the new offer doesn't include the GAP or the warranty.

I should, however, at least explore this ...

Wonder what feature differences there are on the 2017?

Probably doesn't, but my guess is they could pro-rate the warranty. The only reason this could maybe work is that Subaru has a guaranteed trade-in program which I think generally gives pretty good value back.

Yeah, I think that was mentioned. I'll have to take a closer look at the email.

But, I'm not real inclined to reset the clock with the payments, unless I'm getting a significant upgrade. We only have about 23,000 miles on ours, and about 40 or so payments left.

And, as I've previously mentioned, I've got a plan. Don't replace the Jetta when the lease is up, use that money to pay off the Outback quicker, then get a nice something for myself, as we'd only have the one car payment.

I think that's the right move - I seriously doubt the upgrades between 15 and 17 were that significant. I think the only way you do it is if they can lower the payment and not reset the payment clock.

Those types of "offers" rarely work out in the buyer's favor and it's not worth starting over if the differences in model years are negligible. It did work out for my parents last year when they traded their 2013 Escape for a 2016. They gained a car 3 years newer, factory warranty, and more features for less $$$ per month. I looked over the deal front to back and couldn't poke any holes in it other than it reset the clock for them to have one of their vehicles paid off.

Careful there, Sandy! You are sounding very @stickguy -ish! The bright side, though, is that you'll have no worries about actually buying anything any time soon! :p

I have found that modern diesels offer an excellent balance between sportiness, comfort, performance, and economy. Perhaps my biggest stumbling block with the looming prospect of going back to driving my '08 Forester after disposing of the Q7 is the thought that I will be regularly using a gasoline-powered car again. :(

That said, I do very much like our other Forester. It's the manual transmission that makes the lion's share of the difference on that, though! That car, too, would be worlds better with a boxer diesel under the hood.

Are you selling the Q7, or are those eligible for buyback? I forgot what the plan was.

I loved the diesel LR I rented in Ireland. Great powertrain.

Well, not pitching up car tomorrow (don't worry, still getting it). Just talked to SM. they got car, it's all prepped, but was so recent to the dealer they swapped it from that the car was ahead of the paperwork. So they would have to deliver on a dealer take (I think basically as a demo) then I would go back in to sign papers next week. No need for that, so just going to wait until the title paperwork arrives (he said early in the week). So, a few more days of anticipation. Too bad already put it on the insurance. Oh well. More time for my uber approval to come through (yes, I applied to drive to get the rebate).

Speaking of which, hardly costs anything to add for now. If I was keeping 4 cars, total for a full year extra is about $200. Multicar discount ramped up, I think because now have more cars than drivers.

Not bad - and if it gives you time to get Uber approved, well worth the delay to save $1000.

Still waiting on buyback, but I'll sell after having the "fix" performed if they don't end up offering it.
