Turns out no Golf SEL for 2018, bummer! Liked the nicer seats and the other couple extra's it came with. Funny, the wagon still has an SEL trim in it's line-up, strange really. Have enjoyed the VW experience although some things happened that were unnecessary like the busted water pump just miles before the 3/36K warranty was up. Not sure if VW would've covered it if I were over the 36K but luckily, didn't have to go through that. Hate to say it but one of the most trouble free vehicles we've ever had is the kids 2008 Hyundai Accent, which she still has. Year four had the brake light switch fail but after taking it in to check, I was home before the two hour mark. Besides that issue, nothing has gone wrong. Did have to replace one set of tires but her brakes are still original, it's just holding up very well. Am figuring by next year, she'll want something newer since it'll be in year eleven by then. Figure we got our money's worth out of that puppy!!
The Sandman
My wife's old 2006 Elantra also served well for 7 years, after having the same problem with the brake light switch, also about 4 years in. I even found a recall on a bunch of Hyundais for that problem, but the dealer said "no switch for you!" because her build date was just a month outside their range. The DIY is a real pain in the [non-permissible content removed] on a 90+ degree summer afternoon in NC, let me tell you.
We eventually traded that car in on her current 2013 Jetta, so we wouldn't have two cars growing equally old in the same driveway.
I'm not really a convertible guy, either. But, the Targa is more of a really big sunroof... And, used versions are selling around here-ish for only $100k! Only out of my range if I still plan to retire...
Just having random mid-life crisis thoughts (again). Nowhere to stow the skis or drive the boy and all his stuff to his camp counselor job in the Berkshires. I can really only have one car...right?

Someone I recently became friends with is a substance abuse counselor. I was telling her about how the Mustang gives me cramps on long trips and her immediate reaction was “sell it!” I don’t think she realizes that cars are my substance of choice...
interesting conversation with the wife tonight. Was talking about cars when the Jetta goes back (for my daughter) and happened to get a call from the dealer asking if we wanted to trade up early (they really, really want to get us in a new one). So I was talking about our current one, and she said (not first time) that she really doesn't like it, and that it is "too small". I pointed out it is slightly larger than my car, and she said mine was too (first time for that). But did admit that our recent 600 mile trip to NY for easter in it was fine, and it seemed OK.
given her choice, I imagine she would pick something roomier. So we shall see what happens if I decide to move it to the princess. I can go a little larger (no barges though) but really need something with the power and quickness I have gotten used to. Would be hard going back to a putt putt mobile now. I have gotten spoiled.
more interested in the Genesis G70 when that finally comes out. Though a killer lease on a Q50, or the right deal on the TLX, would do the trick too.
she did comment that I should have just leased since I like to change often. I resisted the temptation to say why would I want to lock into something that long? But most likely, if I go back into the market this summer, it will either be cheap and used (spare wheels), or a lease. Possibly even for her.
when is the lease up on the Elantra? are you at least over the top and heading back downhill?
My wife won't care if I work it out to redirect the Elantra to our daughter. But I am almost positive she wants nothing to do with more shopping. As long as it does not involve her car, this quite likely will become a "surprise me when you bring it home" situation. IOW, I will be living dangerously!
good thing the princess has a couple months after graduation before starting work so plenty of time for us to go out looking.
Wish I could drive I don’t live through you guys are going to start going with mom soon to look at stuff seriously the VW stuff seems very appealing to me from when I read maybe the two Quinn might be a strong contender hear something different had on these already in the past I know they’re nice and all just wanna get her a different brand
Stopped in at local Jag/LR dealer today. Spring is in the air, good to see a decent amount of folks shopping. Looks like E-Pace's are trickling in, and going out. Saw one being delivered, another couple about to sign on the dotted line. Sat in a bright red (Caldera) one, black interior with contrasting red stitching. I find it nicer than the XE interior, but all black interior still makes Jack a dull boy. Multi adjustable seat, just seemed a bit tight in width, but small sample size. Poor rear visibility. Nicely styled exterior, but not a looker in the F-Pace league. In fact, I see a bit of Hyundai in the E-Pace. So, maybe. I dunno.
Some of this wacky talk has to do with my XF almost being paid off and a potential reduction of cash outflow soon (not necessarily disposable, though). I do have a not fully scratched scratch ticket, who knows?

my son must be bored. He was poking around looking at cars last night (genetic issue maybe?), and found this for me. I won't ask why he was looking at the Porsche dealer's inventory.
I think he found it amusing that it was at the local Porsche dealer. Not sure he expected me to want it.
I did test drive one years ago when I was semi-seriously shopping for a toy. Nice looking green one, at a house in a well to do town. People had some money. Not sure how well I fit, but I know it was tight. Not quick, but felt quick around the neighborhood. But I do recall it had little to no brakes. Kinda an important thing to tell people before going out on a test drive.
I like that too. I am still not sure I could deal with taking over a lease though. I would need some support on that!
the monthly nut looks good. What are the costs/fees involved? I assume I would have to pay the DMV fees as with a new one. And tax on top of the payment. But is there a swap lease fee too?

I don’t know the particulars. If you swap in state aren’t the taxes already paid? Technically no ownership changed. Same with DMV it’s paid for four years when you buy it. I’d have to do a lot more research before ever really pursuing a Swap.
tax maybe, but you pay again every time it sells. same for DMV fees going to the new owner. So I suspect, knowing this state, that if I took over your lease, I would pay tax again and have to pay redo the DMV piece to get new plates and put it in my name.
OK, I forgot already. what year boxsters suffer from IMS syndrome?
Inception to 2008 with varying degrees of severity and risk over the generations.
But after speaking with several former owners they basically echoed @Mr_Shiftright and said that the IMS was the least of the issues and they’re known for nickel and diming you to death with small things.

my son does too. The Midget I posted the link for he found that while checking out the inventory at the local Porsche dealer. I pointed out some of the risk areas. He did not really care, as it would be a weekend toy and he would assume it would cost some money to own. A few years down the road though, so who knows what happens. I hope it works out, so I can drive it! he needs to get a house with a garage first (with his dream being some kind of lift too. Not that he has any experience doing anything on a car, much less a Porsche).
I can definitely relate. I want a reasonable entry point because I know no matter what, I’ll have some maintenance cost.
You need a plan for where to service/repair the car, before even thinking about it. A Porsche dealer will eat you alive. An independent Porsche shop may only nibble a few fingers off.

Have 3 separate Indy referrals lined up.
Also considering something a bit different. Like a 330i ZHP convertible, if i could find one.

For those of you who don't frequent the "Cars & Conversation" thread, I've sold my house and bought a new one. We move in the middle of May.
Why I am cross-posting in CCBA? Because there are transportation implications.
It is very likely that the Jetta will go back and not get replaced. We will become a one car household with the Outback (the daughter's MIINI doesn't count in this scenario, apparently). Since the wife and daughter commute together 95% of the time, there will almost always be a car in the garage.
Not sure how long that will last, but the wife has allowed that we may buy something outright for me to drive. No discussion of budget, so I'm going slowly on this.
I'll continue to drive the Jetta for the next 16 months, and put as many miles on it as I can; I'm at about 9600 at the moment.

If I sell mine to the kid, need to figure out a price for it. At least if I take a small bath, I can just think of it as a graduation present.
I should swing by carmax and get a quote. Just out of curiosity. 2018 with just over 3,000 miles. still smells new!
