    Congratulations!

There is no pennance for buying a new (er, used) car here on this board.

If you get 22MPG in everyday driving, I might have to convince the wife that her '08 VUE needs to be traded in - we've been getting 19-20MPG. She, too, loves the XC90 (5 seat model).

And, for the first time, the Honda Pilot doesn't sway a CCBA'er.

Did you trade the Odyssey in?

Now, you just have to figure out a replacement for the Accord when the lease is up, right?

fezo - I like that Celica - seems like he's done all the required maintenance. However, seems like a lot of money for 120K.

I am in must resist mode on getting an extra car just because while I need the van I don't like driving it as my regular vehicle.

I think there's just something in general about this time of year that gives people the car-buying bug. I know I'm trying hard to resist it. The Spring Carlisle swap meet in PA is coming up in a couple weeks...I'm gonna try my hardest to behave!

Her current ride is the Pacifica. (I forget who has the Odyssey on the chopping block ... is it stickguy?)
We didn't trade it in. I figured since we have to make the remaining lease payments no matter what, then we might as well hold onto it a bit longer and get our final 3k miles of use out of it. The added insurance will only cost about $300 over the summer, so I think its worth it. Plus, it gives me time to take care of those little things I think they would charge me for at turn-in time (like tires).

That's it .. the Pacifica (yet another one my wife liked - just a bit too big for our current needs).

You NJ boys get me confused all the time - stick, q, fezo (though I've met fezo in person).

the Pac is a bit of a beast. It drives like it, too. Takes alot of planning to perform maneuvers. The XC90 driving home last night was a different story. It is very quick and nimble. It drives more like the Pilot in that regard ... yet is quiet, solid, and secure like the Pac (but trumps both vehicles slightly in each of those regards). So its like the best of both worlds.

Hey, Jersey is a confusing place, ya know? You are excused. :)

I haven't even met fezo, yet we live probably 20 minutes apart. But, then again, I'm 5 minutes from my brother and haven't seen him in a couple of months.

What's the price? CPO? Colors, options?

"Devil's Advocate" wise, CR, FWIW, rates the XC90 lower in reliability than the XC70, or S60 (the S60 actually looks pretty darned reliable).

But I'm convinced by your test drive, & how much you like it. The miles are low. I vote to go for it; they're cool looking vehicles.......I've always liked Volvos......& I'm guessing I'd be very excited if buying a nice low-mileage XC90......

I've spent enough time in NJ to know the state pretty well.

My dad, who grew up in NY, spent his summers in Moorsetown with his aunt and uncle (my godparents). I visited a few times for personal reasons as both a kid and an adult and a whole bunch of other times - all over the state - when I used to travel for business.

There's a good reason why NJ is the "Garden State" - I love both central and south Jersey.

Sounds like you got a good deal on the XC90. Did you elect to purchase the extended warranty?
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
I've got a bid in on the Celica.

I got SWMBO to say go ahead which is all it took.

Actually the price is cheaper than Edmunds pegs it at and at 120K I figure it still has a few years left in it. I'd be surprised if I couldn't get it too 200K.

I've got about 29 hours to wait and see. If I get it I may have to convince q that it's time to do a meet up.

and that is one reason why I am suspicious of CRs research/analysis methods.

The XC90 and XC70 are pretty much the same mechanically, assuming both are using the T5, just with different bodies and the S60 depending on the year and equipment level is also very similar. The only thing that would explain any of it is that most XC90s are AWD and so are most XC70s while most S60s are FWD. Does CR break out data for the T6 and V8 XC90s separate from the T5s?

I gotta admit, it does get good mileage for what it is. I'm expecting around 22mpg. I've seen many reports on the volvo boards that exceed that.

Oh thats not so terrible, my folks were looking at the current XC90 (I guess with the little V8) and in a $4/gal gas area, they freaked. I think it was in the low teens. They are like the anti-CCBrs. After looking at every sport-cute under the sun and anything that can pass for a wagon, she decided they weren't any better than her 10 year old minivan (which I think is one of the more miserable transportation pods I have driven). It is practical though, and I have nothing against mini-vans at all, I just don't care for hers. I would dig on a Mazda5 (especially if they put the turbo in it...), oh and with a stick.

    Motorcycles too?

    CMBA

I am reposting this from one of my other forums I hope the pictures work in this narrow frame.

    OK first a little background...

    flashback

    image

My senior year of HS I bought a non-running 1978, or maybe 1979 I don't remember exactly now, CB750. I only paid a 100 dollars for it because the motor was locked up.

I managed to get it running OK but it never ran great. My plan had been to take it to college as it was much easier for a freshman to get a motorcycle parking permit then a car parking one. Well after screwing around with it for most of the summer I never got it running well enough that I wanted to risk bringing it to school so I left it at home.

The next summer I decided that motorcycles just weren't for me and ended up parting it out on eBay. I made back my initial 100 bucks plus all the other money I spent in parts plus a decent hourly rate for my time. I ended up using all the money to pay for my books sophomore year.

    /flashback

Over the past few weeks I have been thinking that maybe I do like motorcycles but that bike just wasn't the right one for me.

    image

    http://www.triumph.co.uk/streettriple/streetTripleFlash.asp?lang=en-US

Triumph came out with the Street Triple 675 late last year. Its basically the Daytona 675 without all the crotch rocket fairings, called a naked from what I have learned over the past few days, that I don't like plus a few other changes. It has slightly less power then the Daytona and has a lower seat which is fine with me as I have short legs and I haven't ridden a Motorcycle in almost 10 years.

    http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/2008models/2008models-Triumph-StreetT- - riple675.htm

So someone talk me out of this as it is a bad idea ok... ;)

Seriously I will hurt myself and I don't need a motorcycle in New England where I can't even ride it but about six months out of the year anyway..

I would be crazy and/or stupid to buy a bike.

Even if it is as hot and badass as this one is.

Seriously doesn't that thing look sinister in black?

That is both sinister and badazz. You aim higher than me my friend, I am hoping to find a Ninja 500 on the cheap for the spring and summer, as much to cut fuel costs as to have fun. I have been successful finding bikes to borrow until late as most of my bike borrow buddies have left the area.
I think what happens is they buy a 250cc or 500cc bike for their spouse/significant other and then they still don't like to ride. I am not a big dude by any stretch and I do just fine on a 500cc bike. The 250cc bikes are fine too if you are willing to wind the heck out of them (you have to look at it as part of their charm).

I believe that first picture is of the special edition 750 Super Sport.. It sits up higher than the stock 750, and has that nifty 4-into-1 exhaust pipe..

A friend of mine bought one new in '77, I think.. He didn't have a car, so when he had a date, we would switch vehicles.. I think I put a couple of thousand miles on that bike.. :)

    I never bought my own..

since my name was bandied about...

Michael, I live about 15 minutes from Moorestown, and am up that way fairly often. Nice town. I am the S.J branch, Q more S. central, and Fez has the shore covered!

Fez, I like the Celica, but not sure about an AT on one of those. In a few years, college tuition willing, I will get another convertible toy, just something more practical than the Miata I had. Something like that Celica!

BR, odds are you put yourself in the hospital before AK buys her next car if you get one of those. Unless you have some serious self control!

    Q, what's the colors on that XC90?

I drove a few, including going to the launch event at Phila park. Quite impressed taking it around the auto-X style course, and was amazed at how it handled the "moose avoidance" test (wooden moose, professional driver). Certainly proved that the DSC and anti-rollover protection worked!

My SIL has a '07 3.2, and that is also very nice to drive. I found the 2.5T to be plenty peppy though on my test drives.

Although I really want a Street triple I know I shouldn't buy one as my first bike in 10 years and my first new bike ever. I am keeping an eye out for used triumphs., thruxtons or bonnevilles maybe even a speed four, or a naked Suzuki possibly even a naked Honda. I do like the look and specs of the SV650 and the 919. The thing is a new street triple is under 8,000 and a lot of the decent used metric bikes of the same class are in the 5,000 dollar range. I just don't know if I can justify a two or three year old sporty bike, especially given how many of those used bikes get treated, when a brand new one is only a couple thousand more.

Ideally though I would like to find an older cafe racer style bike in the 500cc range for a couple of grand to ride while I get my feet under me again. The street triple has a waiting list currently so I can't even get one now anyway.

You are right I didn't even notice the 4 into 1 exhaust. Mine was just a standard 750 with the quad exhaust.

If you listen to that Triumph triple at redline, you are doomed. Think of the sound a F1 car makes on full boil, then imagine that sound right under your seat.

    Yep, thought so.

I had a 900 Sprint, with "closed course" mufflers. The sound was addictive. That may have been the reason I never got more than 35mpg from that bike. Spent a lot of time at redline.
  • roadburnerroadburner Member Posts: 18,386
I own an ancestor of the Street Triple: a 1996 Speed Triple 900:

    image

    image

My bike is fitted with the Triumph seat cowl, "Racing/Off Road" 3-into-1 exhaust, and six pot front calipers. It's not all that fast compared to current Sportbikes, as 0-60 takes 3.3 seconds, the standing 1/4 mile goes by in 11.5, and it tops out at just under 135. Still, its proven to be a lot of fun to ride and it has proven inexpensive to maintain as well.
    I say go for it!!!

"I am keeping an eye out for used triumphs., thruxtons or bonnevilles"

All IMHO good choices for a reentry bike. Also, the Triumuph Scrambler would be a nice bike.

Just like cars, bikes have improved in the last 10 years. And if I were going to consider new bikes, Kawasaki makes a couple of great bikes, the 650 Ninja, 500 Ninja, 650 Versys comes to mind, even the KLR650 can be a hoot. No connections at all, the one Japanese brand I've never owned is Kawasaki.

    as 0-60 takes 3.3 seconds

Bikes are just incredible at what they can do, even for a 10 year old motorcycle I am sure that is plenty fast.

I toyed with the idea of getting a motorcycle but with the traffic around me I decided a Miata(with airbags) would be a less scary choice. I don't know how you guys ride a bike with so many huge vehicles around. I am sure the maneuverability helps, but I would be thinking way too much about it to enjoy.

Sorry, couldn't resist the backhanded comment about the traffic.

I've never owned a motorcycle and probably never will, so I'm not qualified to comment on br's folly adventure to find a new bike for commuting purposes.

Well, so far I am still winning the auction on the Celica but under the guy's reserve. That's exactly where I'd like to be when the thing ends. Must figure out getting a mechanic in Bridgeton to check it out. I already know where their DMV is. I had a girlfriend from over there back in college.

Our XC90 is gold on tan with 23k miles and premium and climate packs and AWD (did i say this already? i apologize if i'm repeating myself). Gold on tan was actually my 2nd color choice. Only certain cars do I like gold on. This is one of them. My first choice would have been burgundy on tan. And, although I love how it looks in black, I wouldn't want to live with it long-term.

Final deal was $22k flat + $199 doc fee. I was going to do outside financing, but they came in at a couple of tenths higher (a bit less than $4/mo), and I just decided to go with that and save the hassle.

We found this one at Academy Honda in Old Bridge. I did not get an extended warranty. They wanted a ridiculous amount of money for it. And, oddly enough, it didn't occur to me until I was signing the papers, this is still under factory warranty. It was originally purchased in 12/04, so we're good (even have roadside assistance) till 12/08. I definitely plan on taking it to the dealer ASAP to have them go over it. But it drives so perfectly, I doubt there will be anything to worry about.

Hey, got a small bonus, too. The tires on this are the same size as the Pac. Chrysler will charge us for new tires if we return our lease when the tread is 3/32 or less. The tires on the volvo look almost brand new, but I've read up on them on tirerack and they rate very poorly (Michellin Symphone, IIRC). SO, I will swap these tires to the Pac and get good new tires for the volvo.

    Nice car and nice deal!

Gold works on some cars and that's one of them. The good side of that is that it's a very forgiving color - it will look pretty good even if it gets dirty. Silver does that, too.

I could see where burgundy would be your first choice. Great color for that.

Now despite the theatrics that wet with the deal I'll say that Honda dealers outside of Ocean County seem to be a heck of a lot easier to deal with than one in the county.

You bought it????? I'm impressed: it looks great from the 3 pics, in the Gold color.

For $22k, for a 2005 "premium" vehicle with low miles, what more could you want? Maybe I should add the XC90 to my "list" of potential vehicles........

The FZ has a nice seating position; pretty comfortable. But, if you are freaked out about a speed triple being too much bike after 10 years, the FZ1 is maybe worse. That said, the very fact that you are aware of needing to take it easy means that you should be okay with most bikes you choose. Everyone seems to love that 675 Triple. My friend has a Sprint ST that he has put 40K miles on with very little trouble.

Besides, being rational is not my strong point (CCB, duh). I have a v-strom 650 and I keep thinking about a ktm 990SM... :surprise:

    Neighbors car (so known history).

1998 Altima GXE. White, AT. 80,000 miles.

just serviced, so should need nothing. Good tires and brakes.

Needs a detail, but never in an accident. Owners never had any problems with it. Drove fine around the block.

Owner did smoke at one point, so there is some lingering odor that I would have to work on (my son, who the car is for, said it smelled like a rental!).

Generally a nice older car with good mileage.

Intended as the first car for a 17YO.

They are looking for 3,000. What says the experts?

Depends on how bad the smell is... If it's faint, you can probably liberally spray Febreeze or other deodorizer and get rid of it. If it's strong, you might ask your local furniture medic or other repair place what they'd charge to treat it with an ozone fumigation machine.

The price seems fair for a clean, low-mileage car with records.

For $3000 you will be hard pressed to find any car with less than 100k miles, maybe an old Escort or a Cavalier. The Altima is a pretty reliable car per Consumer Reports and you know the history so that's a big plus. If they have receipts, even better.

I see it needing a good detail as a plus. Let your son get out the the wax and do a good detail himself and it will feel like he made it a new car on his own. Nothing like making your car shine to bond with it.

If it being a smokers car is the only drawback I would say it is an excellent deal and to jump on it. With a little bit of work you should be able to get rid of most of the smell.

Congrats on the Celica, she sure is purdy, and just in time for the top down season. I bought my Miata an January so the past few weeks has made the wait for the warm weather worth while. There is nothing like the top down , sun on your face and a nice CD blasting.

When do you pick it up ?
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,046
My Mom & stepdad have a 1999 Altima that probably has about 250,000 miles on it by now. As far as I know, the only problems they've had with it were the first transmission crapping out at 35,000 miles, and the battery going dead around 80-90,000 miles. The transmission was replaced under warranty, with no fuss whatsoever.

I really don't care for the car myself, because I think it's kinda ugly and not very comfortable, but other than that premature tranny failure, it's been a good, reliable car.

Many thanks. With any luck at all I will pick the car up on Saturday. Trying to convince this seller that a money order is as good as cash. He wants either cash or to wait until the money order clears. One way or another we will make that part work. Don't exactly want to hang around with that much cash but we will see.

That Altima sounds like a good deal for a starter car. Of course now my 15 year old thinks a certain Celica looks good for a first car...

I'm going to have to buy a car this summer for my son to learn to drive on. No way on this green earth would I let him learn on my Pilot!!!

Maybe the old ford for a bit until I can find something, but even that is iffy, the old truck is rather onery and takes a bit to drive. It wouldn't be that way if hubby would replace the front end and steering gear box.........only been bad for the nearly 2 years we've owned the truck!! Darn truck would be easier to drive drunk than sober!! I hate driving it, its a pain, always have to be one step ahead of it. Not exactly what a kid learning to drive needs!

Probably going to look for an older Focus or something. Not in any hurry that's for sure!

Pilot is 9 months old, just realized that, lol. Still can't find anything I really dislike about it!

From my experience as a teenager, the kid (any kid) will find things to not like on the car. Or maybe, any car. Personally, I hate smoking smell, but for $3K it sounds almost like a "no brainer".......

Walking is one other option that you might point out (?).

Or, as my wife likes to say:

"You get what you get and you don't throw a fit"

Having quoted the wife, I sorta understand where stick is coming from. The wife and I were running some errands over the weekend and we happened to be next to a car where the driver was smoking. She asked what it was that folks saw in that habit, and we couldn't quite figure it out. I then commented that it was going to be real tough for him to sell that car with the smoke smell in the seat fabric.

Not sure that it can ever be removed.

Planning a House Hunting trip to S. Maine in the next few days. Some apparent bargains in York County (southern-most coastal area of ME), compared to a few years ago. Got my eye on one, with a big beautiful 2 car garage, but almost afraid to mention it (?), it looks so nice........I've been having this real depressing experience of houses selling 5 minutes before I go to see them, or make an offer.......

So much for the great real estate bust, at least in nice parts of New England........

When I sold my E24 M6, cheap (long story), & the buyer drove off, he lit up a cig. in the car. It was like, after all I'd been thru with the car (being rear-ended, etc.), this was the perfect bad ending.

That's how much I hate smoking, & smoke smell. But when I was 17--or 20--I was lucky if I even had a car that ran, most of the time.

Then there's a story about smells in my first car, a used 1962 Mercury, & well, it's not an uplifting story. But 17 year olds "do what they do", as I recall.....(???)

with all the stories of fake cashiers checks floating around the net, I'm not surprised at his apprehension.

Can you link that car again? I went back yesterday to take a look and the link wouldn't work for me.

    Well, see if thisworks....

That's from the MyEbay. Probably will show the guy has a deposit from me...

He and I may be sharing paranoia. He's thinking I'll have a fake money order and I'm thinking of all those folks that get lured to a location by Craigslist and relieved of money...

It will be fine. Can't think of when I've carried that much cash. Saturday would be an excellent day to get the thing. Supposed to be sunny and warm. I need some SPF 15 Brylcreem....
