Hey @qbrozen - Subaru Ascent is currently at the top of the list. Also the Outback if she wants to swing a little smaller this go around but still get much more space than the X1. Highlander is also high on the list as a budget choice.

I could make a move now or wait. Dealers up here are going deep on the Ascent because of the lack of Forester and Crosstrek inventory, so there are deals to be had.

I'm curiously waiting to see how this pans out.

I've told this story before. We run a small, plumbing supply business in a very bad neighborhood (it's much better than when I was a kid). In 2004 my Dad leased an '04 X5, then another X5 in 2007. Every now and then, he'd leave work early or come in late, certain customers would comment: "no wonder copper prices are so expensive. We're paying for your Bimmer." When the 2007 X5 went back, he bought (and has driven since) a Tahoe. Now they say: "Nice truck!"

Yep, Know the feeling. The Jag XJ6 was my dads dream car at one point. Back in the late 80’s he almost took the plunge but what stopped him he told me was ‘what would my employees think?’. At that time in a mid sized North Alabama town a Jag was still a little exotic. Heck the dealer was in Birmingham some 80 miles away.

So he got another Cadillac Fleetwod Brougham. It ended up having an oil burning problem that the dealer couldn’t fix. Rings I think it was but probably still better than dealing with late 80’s Jaguar quality!

Speaking of Mom’s car.  I have been saying that I want a Porsche of some kind ever since I can remember.  My fav poster car as a kid was the 928.  I loved the 944 Turbo and had a chance to drive an ‘89 when I was 18.  Boosters, Caymans, 911s, Panameras, Macans are all beautiful.  However, I don’t know if I have the stomach for the maintenance costs.

I spoke to the Porsche dealer this AM to see what service was required as my Mom made an appointment for next week as she approaches 70K miles on her 2016 V6 Cayenne.  Oil & Filter change, Cabin Filter, Air Filter, Brake Fluid Flush, Fluid Top off, check & tighten everything.  $1,350.  I know, ouch.  They do come and pick up the car (the dealer is a solid 45 minutes - 1hour away) & drop off a loaner (either a macan or cayenne).

I got an email coupon from the Porsche Dealer for an oil change/fluid top off, as well as a full interior/exterior detail for $499.  So I asked the service advisor if that can be included into the service somehow.  So she broke the 10K service down, removed the oil change & fluid too off to add the Oil Change/Detail.  It came out to $50 more.  So for $50, she’s getting a full interior/exterior detail.

having finally taken the Porsche plunge (Macan V6 CPO)-- much different driving than audi, MB, acura- my most recent rides... dealership experience better too

Tell us all about it! That is my wife's dream car.

I can not remember if I posted my buying experience...

was looking to change out 2014 A4 6sp manual as my kids/family could not inherit as they are not able to drive clutch and do not want to learn

had narrowed down to MBc300 coupe, but too hard to get in back seat

so then back to sedans: Volvo S60 t6 and genesis G70-- but would wait a year as did not want first model year

saw a 2017 CPO Macan and got wife to go look; we were both 'smitten' with ride quality and fun factor; and it optioned with all I wanted. While on 'test drive', it got 'sold' by new car manager over phone.. dealer was apologetic and we were polite...

sale fell through and so they call back 2 days laters... we went in , placed deposit, and returned next day to finalize...

they of course undervalued Audi (couldn't CPO, manual, etc) , but we got a couple of dents fixed and some finish work done on Macan; ultimately they liked my A4 and sold it themselves instead of sending to sister Audi ....

Car: V6; nav and car play; 21inch staggered wheels... is flat through curves and has relentless power; white over red so another red interior on this forum
it is similar length to A4, and happy about that

    tom

Congrats Tom! You made the right choice! White over Red Macan S must be STUNNING! Please post pics if you can!

Took another test drive of the Clubman today.  Nice long drive with some twisties and highway.  It’s a remarkably composed vehicle, worlds different than the previous generations of Minis.

The young salesman remarked on how I drove the manual so well that “he’d swear it was an automatic if his eyes were closed.”  A little flattering, but I think it just means capable shifters are a dying breed.

Anyway, it would certainly be a very practical fun car.  And I do like the more mature look, albeit with character, over a Civic Si.

My wife feels the same way. She hated my BMW. I had it for a little over 3 years and she never drove it.
Well, I think she secretly appreciates it for what it does do well. In fact, last year when her Forester was in the shop for about 3.5 weeks for it engine replacement, we had a "new" Toyota minivan for the entire time. She never even rode in that vehicle, but instead made me use it and took my car instead.

TBH, I still really like vans. If I could get something like a Sienna with a diesel engine, I would be all over that. I told my friend who bought the Nissan NV3500 down in Utah that I would really consider one of those, too, if it had a diesel option. Maybe Ford will drop their F150 diesel into their full-size van.

Love that Clubman, my colors to! We'd never buy German vehicles either until my wife decided to just do it. That was my chance and about a week later, drove my VW home. She was a bit shocked but hey, she opened the door so I just went through it also. Worked out pretty well since I had had enough of the Hyundai Tucson I got at a weak moment. Never purchase anything when you're not 100% in with the decision. I kinda knew within a week that I really f'ed up, so when the right time came, I fixed the problem!

Drove an Escalade this afternoon and liked the heads up display more than I thought. Nice to have it right where ones eyes meet the road and it didn't effect my driving vision one bit. Right before that, was in a 2019 Civic and liked the dash improvements plus it had knobs for the radio. Good that Honda listened to their customers about this issue. But while getting out of it, was a bit difficult as it's just too low. Needs to be raised about 6 or so inches. Which makes the HR-V a good choice if I want to go Honda again. But they really need to put the 1.5 turbo from the Civic under the hood. Do that, and you just might have me for a customer again. An EX-L model in either blue or pearlized white would fit the bill nicely. Like everything else about the car except the poor low end torque and the lack of proper infotainment system knobs. Hoping that Honda finally gets it and fixes both of these issues and if so, think they would be able to sell every one they can produce.

I just finished a couple test drives of a used Civic Si (2018) and WRX (also 2016).

Seems I prefer the increased refinement of the Clubman over the more raw nature of these other candidates.

But unlikely it will happen this weekend.  The Mini is at a one price shop, and I think I’ll give it some time for the price to get lowered.  Maybe another grand.  I can’t imagine there’s much demand for a manual Clubman.

Nice call! It's actually available, for build outs, anyway, more widely. Now I'm casually curious as to what a 4x4 conversion costs on it.....

Oh, my! Just located an article on TransitConnect (minivan) that says it has a diesel offering coming out as well. Not sure if this is US-spec or not, but article seems to indicate it is. However, minivan is probably a more practical fit for me, except that I really doubt I could get a 4x4 conversion on it.

    Fun to consider, though.

In addition, Transit Connect’s upcoming 1.5-liter EcoBlue diesel—the only available diesel in the segment—is targeted to return an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of at least 30 mpg highway.

My wife preferred European or Japanese car, but never owned a BMW before 1998 when she decided to get a 318ti; after that she has been firmly in the BMW or Mini camp- although like me she hates to see most all new BMWs continuing to increase in size and weight.

Yeah, if this was more than a second fun car, I’d want a lot more equipment and features. For that matter, I do wish it had the premium package, but I do love that it’s an S All4 with the manual. And a color I really like. A little tough to find.

Since you mentioned the X1, and it’s obvious relation to the current crop of Minis, I was curious to check them out. Had no idea they had come down so much on the used market.

This seems like a much better value if I decided I didn’t have to have a manual.

The GTI and Clubman are great choices for a ‘fun’ DD that doesn’t completely sacrifice functionality. I bet that Miata is a blast to drive. Unfortunately a 2 dr convertible is completely out of the picture for me.
