Could it be the car is first place and the $15k case is second place?

I’m thinking the truck is up for grabs in the first place because that build is worthless in Alaska.

@xwesx, that was quite an alternator job. Look at the bright side of this…if you didn’t have bad luck you wouldn’t have had any luck at all doing this job. For your sake I hope it puts out lots of kilowatts before you have to do this job again. :'(

Will Carmax etc take a vehicle that has not been registered? You typically have to pay taxes first…

In personal property tax states, true. However, that's not an issue in Alaska. Federal are the only applicable taxes, and, of course, those aren't due until the following year.

Ultimately, I have to thank @qbrozen for planting the idea of going in through the wheel well. I was, at first, trying to get the airbox out in order to give myself more space to get at the side of the alternator (from the top of the engine bay). However, I couldn't get it out of there without gaining access to the bottom where a couple of hoses were attached, so I finally decided to go snooping by removing that liner, and then all sorts of solutions presented themselves....

While it was a lot of work just getting to the point where I could remove the alternator from the car, this method was far simpler than disassembling enough hoses to pull it up and out through the front. Online, the only information I could find was a Youtube video that was laughably bad at actually instructing the viewer on how to perform the job.

https://www.carvana.com/vehicle/2152536 anyone want to buy for basically what we paid in 2017 at 0 miles for this one? WOW. Maybe a few dollars less, but not much. I suppose with inflation accounted for it's "much" cheaper.

Stumbled across this one again, and I was curious if it was still on Carvana given that whopping asking price. Yep, still there... and purchase pending! /facepalm

Saw a couple of cool less expensive cars on my commute today. 1st was a Grey Maverick with the "steelies." It is the 2nd or 3rd one I've seen in the wild and I really like it. Good job @stickguy. The 2nd car i saw was a Corolla APEX. Grey, Black Badges. The car was a 6-speed and the guy was cooking.

I’m wondering when the crazy used market normalizes. And if it will be gradual or more of a crash. Still folks on the Maverick forum getting one that isn’t what they want exactly and waiting on other orders or planning to order 2023 models to make a windfall. At some point that won’t be there I assume.

We sat in one last night, already spoken for of course but we asked if we could take a quick look. The sales guy said they are trickling in but all pre-ordered. He said they had one guy back out of an order that came in on Monday, but they had a list of folks to call and it was gone within the hour.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,419
That’s pretty much how it’s going. No dealer stock orders at all.

Though a lot of people ordered multiple so eventually there should be more rejected orders accumulating for dealers to keep.

I remember the dealership. Didn’t she also have one on Montgomery Road? If memory serves, it was near a Rolls Royce dealership. I went past it, but never went in. Then again, I can’t ever recall being in the market for a Buick!

I misspoke. The Schott Buick was on Montgomery Rd. Reading Rd touches but doesn't go through Norwood.

You probably got off the Norwood Lateral at Reading Road to get there. :)

Got an idea for you. Drive the Maverick to a parking lot and leave it there. Later that day have Mrs. @stickguy drive you to that parking lot and when she drives down the aisle where you parked your Maverick yell out, “hey, there’s a Maverick and it looks just like mine”. That’s the best I can do for ya.

It’s old. Check a wreckers yard and see if you can find one there. Ideally the same color!

Though duct tape is a perfectly acceptable repair.

@sda - glad your daughter is okay and no one was hurt.

@stickguy - you've gotta be feeling just awesome to have secured your Maverick! Well done.

As many of us do, I've been stalking my trade in - the XC90 is still sitting at the BMW dealership after a month, at a mere $3k over the trade allowance. Interestingly, they also took in a same year (2021) XC90 Recharge in the same color.

Given the current environment, it's surprising to see a nice used SUV sit that long.

It’s still a really expensive used car, and not certified. At a non brand dealer. All things that make it a harder sell.

On Monday I was afraid I might be suddenly in the market to buy another car. My daughter had a broken hearted Valentine's day. After taking lunch to her boyfriend at his workplace, she partially ran a STOP sign, she did stop but the front of the car poked out too far and bumped a passing car. No injuries other than pride. A panic call to her mom. We asked if she was OK, yes, but the car was destroyed. Front bumper essentially ripped off. Yikes. Being somewhat positive and good Boy Scout I took heavy duty duct tape and a utility knife with me. When I got there I noticed no damage to the hood, fenders, headlights, a/c condensor, radiator. Just a mess. I was able lift what remained of the bumper, click it partially in the clips to secure it. All of the plastic plug fasteners used to hold the bumper popped off. She was able to drive it home. I took it yesterday to get a damage estimate. The bumper cover and all associated fasteners needed, but otherwise all ok. Estimate of $1100. My daughter was lucky she didn't receive a ticket and the police that helped her were great. I am not looking forward to the increase in our insurance premium! To boot, I just had the car serviced and a new battery installed last Saturday! We have to wait until 2/25 to take the car in to be repaired and then 3-4 days for the repair. This was her first real incident in almost 4 years.

Glad your daughter is OK. $1,100 in damage is certainly nothing to sneeze at. Was the other car damaged? What is your deductible?

Glad she’s ok. I bet you could find what you need in a salvage yard, especially if you don’t mind if the colors don’t match. When my kid busted up the front of my 91’ Oldsmobile I told the body guy to just make it functional. I ended up with a blue bumper for a white car. The car was old, it worked fine and best of all it was cheap ($300).

    Nice duct tape repair BTW.

Of all things she hit the right rear door of a pearl white 2016 Acura MDX. More of a crease, door not disformed and still operable. We have $500 deductible. I know it is an old car but it is still worth repairing correctly.

That bumper doesn’t look bad. Can you replace the clips so won’t need the tape? Or are they sheared off the skin? If you can rpthst and a can of paint and good to go!

I still vote for a used piece. 5 minute install, and good to go.

The bumper has cracks and a hole near the middle. Too rough to save. The body shop has already received a check from USAA. It was insane how fast they received it, about two hours after I left!

I think its going to be a quick fall when the supply chain issues are worked out. These factories can pump out an astounding amount of vehicles. As long as there’s transportation to the dealers, the pipeline can fill up quick.

So many moving pieces though. Will they have the workers to ramp up production quickly? How many were furloughed when then plants didn’t have the parts to sustain production? What is the next bottle neck? I’m sure they have slowed their orders of tires and other parts due to reduced demand. All those other parts could be the next issue.

I was going to say, 80s stuff is hot these days, while it may be a little dear, it's not insane - this isn't a $5K car or something. That is if the condition is commensurate for mileage, original finishes, etc.

Makes sense. That’s what us 50/60 YO guys (generally the people with money!) had as kids, or in my case, really wanted but didn’t have the money at the time (or had to get something more practical)
