I’m not a big fan of that platform in general. Not my cup of tea. But that one seems crusty underneath and needs tires. And that mirror on front of the hood looks strange. Like something on a school bus.

The mirror is extremely common on cars in Japan. No idea why. Tires are easy. I'm not seeing the crust? I mean, it isn't new, but, hell, looks like an NJ car after maybe 7 or 8 years. My 2010 Escape is WAAAAYYY worse than that.

I like that 4Runner a lot. My first SUV was a 2000 SR5. I always thought that sport package was attractive on that gen 4Runner.

4Runner is nice and seems like a great deal even in this market. 136k is nothing miles wise. I had that V6 in my ‘95 Tacoma and could have sworn it was rated at 195. Either way it moved it along just fine.

The 2022 Hybrid Touring CRV has much less engine noise compared to the 2020 Touring CRV. The 2022 hybrid has a 2.0 plus two electric motors. The 2020 Touring had a 1.5 turbo.

My wife commented that “you can actually pull out quickly” in the hybrid. Gas mileage is so far 4 mpg better and climbing.

  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,358
I liked the CRV hybrid we drove when it first came out. I took a shot at pointing the wife to that instead of the new RDX (and with what the price of gas has done, I must have been a fortune teller seeing the future). Needless to say my plan failed. At least we don't drive the gas guzzler much.

Didn't @ronsteve or someone else here decide against the CR-V Hybrid because he or the wife felt it was pokier than the 1.5T? Interesting that you had a different experience.

I haven't driven one, so can't comment on the driving experience, but the lack of a spare tire in the Hybrid turns me off.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,358
OK, I know the answer to "why?" is always "because" or "why not?"

the question was really meant to be, what purpose would this serve in the fleet. Leave at the beach house? Be a daily driver? Keep the other non-moving cars in the driveway company?

    IOW, "Why not?"

IIRC, only the '67 Coronet is stationary at the moment. Everything else ought to get driven at least once a week.

If it goes 3 consecutive weeks without being driven, it should be culled from the fleet.

that last point is a big reason I don't bother to look for a fun car. If I drove the current ones any less I would probably need to put them on battery tenders.

if we finally move I will most likely be doing a lot more driving around. Fewer long trips (since up there is generally were we travel to!) but more moderate length local driving.

No room for spare with hybrid battery so have Honda roadside assistance and wheel and tire coverage with roadside assistance.

Did I mention parking sensors that allow you to not hit Porsche Cayennes in HS parking lots? It all buffed out and Cayenne had almost 190k miles….

Wasn’t me. I never shopped any CR-V. But the lack of a spare tire would turn me off too.

I do wonder if there will be an Integra to look at when the RDX goes in for its next service in May or June, depending on how OCD I want to be about the timing belt.

I've been lucky in that most of what I've had have been slow leaks that didn't require mounting a spare. But I've used them before on my 2002 Altima (metal in tread of tire, used Fix-a-Flat to try to limp it to the tire shop, the metal got thrown out of the tire, and the Fix-a-Flat also leaked out). Similar situation on my 2009 Altima, although I think it went flat in my garage. The 2013 Jetta GLI had low profile rims--one got impact damage and a bulging sidewall, so I put the spare on as a proactive measure until I could get a new tire fitted.

I’ve been analyzing my car usage and it’s gotten to the point where it is so low that when the S60 lease is up I’m 95% decided upon not replacing it. It won’t even have 15K miles when it goes back.

The XC is way under miles and we always have my mom’s car too if needed. I can count on one hand the amount of times in the last few years where all three cars were in use.

Much of this decision is based upon the current market. Why should I pay through the nose for something I don’t really need.

So I guess I should hang my head in shame for being practical.

Adding to the decision is my wife more and more hates to drive. She goes into the office maybe twice a month. She isn’t a fan of the train since Covid and won’t drive in the city anymore, so I end up taking her.

Yes, @tjc78, someone has to keep the economy running by buying a bunch of cars, whether they need them or not! Might as well be you.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,358
my wife barely drives either. 2 years on the new RDX, and she was driving the other day (actually went into the office for a team get together) and on the way home got a call. And had no idea how to answer it. On "her" car.

she just has no reason too. Not that she has any phobia about it. Probably doesn't care though. We almost always go places together on the weekend (and I always drive) and she rarely has any place to go during the week. So lack of seat time opportunities.

we had 1 car for about 15 months and it worked OK. but still nice to have a back up! If we had the princess still living here with a car of her own I would not see any reason to have mine though.

    Golf clap.

That’s what we did in 2019 when I returned the Jetta with only 17,000 miles on it.

@stickguy - It's an easier decision if the "backup" car is nearly fully depreciated, like my Prius. I think my parents are in a similar situation--they have put about 15,000 miles on their 2018 Q5.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,358
for sure. If I had something like the old 3.2TL I took back when my son got out of college I would have just kept it kicking around for spare car duties.

at least the truck I can justify as being useful! This weekend I will load up the bed with a bunch of stuff to take to donate somewhere. That will be fun.

I’ve had to shuttle the bmw and Infiniti around over the last couple weeks to mechanics to get things done. My wife has basically said she’s done with driving me to shops and to Uber/Lyft to drop off and pick up instead.
