How does that settle out economically? When I quit my corporate job to become a farmer the finances were shaky and I worried for a long time if I would be able to feed my family.
Would you just get another job in your field or strike out in your own business?
Well, if you really want the details…
The initial thinking is that I could substitute teach twice a week, pick up 15-20 hrs freelance editing, and only have a $3500/mo gap to make up with cars. This is to equal current salary plus rent on biz and home equity loan payment.
Why freelance in the area I’m wanting to leave? Eh, mostly because no meetings, no teams interactions, and pick when I put in the hours. Subbing is probably dumb given the monetary reward. I mean, about 3 hrs of freelance equals 2 days of subbing. But I enjoy it.

I feel for you. Being unhappy at work is tough. I think I mentioned we just had a pretty large “reorganization” and while I’m happy that I was retained the crap show I inherited has me pretty frustrated. Luckily my right hand guy can run the old stuff and allow me to focus on new department. Every day this week a new screw up was found. Then I dig into the financials and every project is pretty over budget. Around 4:00 last night I just got up and called it a day. It’s been a rough two weeks!
I’m 63 and would love to retire. With a daughter in college and it appears 3 more years to go and the cost of health insurance, I will keep working! For those of you who have younger kids, if you haven’t done so, fund a 529. It has enabled us to pay college tuition without having to take out an education loan. I anticipate replacing the TL as well. So far at 174k it runs and drives well but one day..just washed an hour ago.
wife was mentioning today when we were out cleaning the shelves at 3 separate supermarkets that she is really burned out and tired of her job. we chatted about a possible move to a different group that would be less stressful, but she is very bad about asking for things. so who knows.
one of us would keep working. With that one being me, for some income (though would really miss hers) and the health insurance. Though her job is much more secure.
I figure 2 more years should be doable. bank some cash to live on before SS and Medicare kicks in (if they still exist of course) and by then, everything we currently own (house and cars) would be paid off. so if we can resist buying anything new, would be living very cheap cashflow wise!
though we were discussing maybe moving in a couple of years, depending on what we decide about where we really want to be (location) longer term in this general area. at least the next move will be much, much easier since we already did the heavy lifting purging stuff!
@breld - I like that 640i. The price seems not to be unreasonable, either. That's, what, about half of its new MSRP?
We figured about 60%
Yes, I met up with @breld and I test drove the 640. Wow - what a nice car. Fast, quiet, very well equipped (H/K stereo, adaptive cruise, heads up display, all the bells and whistles). And, not something you see too often, unlike 5-series or X3s. I could live with it even if it was silver over black.
well, this trip was a bust. The info provided contradicted what I was previously told. I'll give more details maybe tomorrow when I'm sitting watching football. I've got an email out to the owner of the company I got in bed with. Have a feeling I'll be making some credit card disputes in the very near future. As I sat there in the conference room, I pondered the potential video series I could make. Will have to give it some thought. I'm not much of a camera person. Or, more accurately, not a camera person AT ALL. But maybe it would be therapeutic.

Interesting mix of conversation and events to start the holiday week!
I can definitely commiserate on the job motivation/situation. I've been struggling with that for a couple years now, too. I actually applied for a different role in the organization just to (hopefully) shake things up a bit and reengage. I've already decided to stick with it until retirement (under nine years now), so I just need to feel some drive behind what I'm doing again.
That 640 is a beauty, Michael! I guess it is a nice thing that it's NOT silver/black, but so much better than that! Are you seriously considering making a move on it?

sounds more like a pyramid scheme hustle, or one of those come ons for a timeshare pitch.
but better to find out now if you need to bail.
maybe need to find a small local lot where the owner wants out and you can just buy it from him.
Around here there are many small lots. I guess it’s because they are close to the Manheim auction. There used to be a couple of drivers who were retired from the auto business and now rented out their lots to others. Renting from a previously established owner might be a way to meet all the regulatory requirements.

My BMW dealer took in an interesting car from BMW Corporate- a 330e M Sport. RWD with the Dynamic Handling Package, which gets you the Adaptive M Suspension, M Sport brakes, 19" wheels, and Variable Sport Steering. No HK, but a Bavsound speaker set can fix that. It's the most practical car I've looked at, but I'm afraid I'd tire of it sooner than later.

Looks good. I like the standard steel wheels. Seems like you got a great deal. The turbo 2.0 is a lot of engine for that vehicle. Congrats!

the RDX is probably a little quicker in a drag race (AWD helps a little) but real world driving (as in, we don't drag race) they feel comparable and both are more than quick enough.
Yesterday my dealer took in a Dravit Gray M340i. RWD but no Cooling and HP Tire Package or laser headlamps. I'm coming around to the view that I heard one of the guys on Throttle House say. The M340i is a lot faster than a 330i, but it doesn't feel significantly more special than the 330i.

Saturday we went to a college football game, my screen name should give you a hint as to which one.😀. The 2 hour drive down and back in the 4xe are uneventful. I find the Jeep comfortable but it is noisy particularly for the backseat passenger. Successfully navigate all of the Atlanta traffic and construction mess and we get home fine.
Sunday I get up to run some errands and the Jeep is dead, dead, dead. Those that have one will know, but my screen near the speedo lit up with its usual message and the infotainment screen woke up but there is zero action when I press the start button. I made sure it was in park and even tried to put it into neutral and the shifter wouldn’t move.
Under the hood I go and straight to the fuse box. I check a few of the usual suspect (starter, ECM, etc) fuses and they are all seated and in working order. Then I notice 2 large ones that have come unseated and viola, problem solved.
It does scare me a bit that if these popped out and bricked the Jeep, what would have happened if it did this while moving in interstate traffic? It was locked up. Steering absolutely would not move, no shifter.

Today it's considered a mid-size ship, but is actually about the same size as the Queen Mary, and twice the tonnage of the ill-fated Titanic. But large cruise ships of the last few years are easily twice the size of Eurodam, which was built in 2008.

Motor Trend managed a 5.0s 0-60, but even so it’s hardly a rocket ship.

Well, just don’t ask any of the women in your house about that because all women will blame a man for stuff like that.

My wife’s XC and the truck are pretty much identical. Depends where you look but overall both are mid 6 seconds or so.
In both cases plenty fast for the type of vehicle.

I bet this is a fun ride so long as there is easy access to a gas station.

@sda - I’m still amazed at how well that generation TL has held up. Still looks great!
