so, debated with the wife and decided to fire up the Carvana machine and unload my Mav early. But got caught up last night with some issues and did not get around to it, thinking I had until today. Turns out I had until midnight, so the offer expired. So I had to refresh (and add 300 miles to the inputs since I had guessed low.

so, turns out that they were not rolling that (IMO) crazy high offer. They actually Raised it by about $400. Not bad making $400 a week tax free, for doing nothing but being lazy!

so I will wait until Wednesday or so to submit all the required docs, so pickup should be the following week, meaning I get another weekend to think of everything "pick up with a truck" stuff I need to do before I am truckless!

current targetted build date is 4/12. If that does not slide, it should arrive somewhere in mid-late May. So looking at about 3 months.

A lot can happen in 3 months, especially these days. In theory it could be worth more in 3 months, but I would be shocked if it was. So IMO limited upside potential, but plenty of downside. And I doubt the dealer would come close to offering enough to even make up for the tax credit savings.

also would make it easier to get the new one (since that is out of state 4 hours away now) and dealing with the paperwork logistics of transferring the old registration and plates (which I will keep) and hoping they get that right. Instead I should just get a temp tag and can go to the local DMV office and do it myself.

though It would be nice if I could get the contact at the dealer to confirm all that!

@stickguy 3 months isn't that long to wait for the next one. I don't blame you for getting your money now out of the current one.

Also: Run to the bank with that Carvana check. lol

You are aware that in NY you can’t drop the insurance unless you turn in the plates or put them on another vehicle, right? Are you planning on paying insurance for a truck you no longer own or am I misunderstanding your plan?

I went into the DMV office and talked to the lady there to make sure, and she said it was perfectly fine. I just had to notify the insurance company that I was going to transfer the registration when the new one came in. So not worried about that. Not that the insurance is going to be all that much.

it did not get hit by too much salt, and I ran it through the wash with underbody spray the one time it did, and washed it by hand (also spraying underneath) in the driveway 3-4 times too.

Actually, you have been privileged to have witnessed one of the mildest upstate winters on record (not counting Buffalo). Most of the storms were rain, not snow so there was much less salt and even that has been washed away by the rain. I’m lovin’ it!

If my son hadn’t blocked the garage door I might have taken the Mustang to work.

Looks like I'm going to work Saturday & Sunday. Not a whole day on either so I'm glad about that. Should start by 8:45 tomorrow and be off by 3 or so and Sunday, same start time but off by 2:15, give or take. I wanted to wait till Tuesday to return but my friend, the weekend lead driver, his step-son passed away Thursday & they needed a driver to take over the weekend gig, so they asked me. My wife is doing some tax work for the weekend boss & he asked her to ask me if I could work. Was hesitant at first as I wish he had come to me directly but just told her to tell him yes as they need a body who has worked the weekends before. And the logical choice was me I presume. He must've talked it over with my boss who o k'd me coming in as he knew I had an accident at home & was laying low for the week. But hey, I'm a team player & will step in this time to help out. And luckily, they won't be as long as our regular days are.

Is that a model that has the problem? I know my Kia Soul is on that list. I don’t travel to many high crime areas but I often wonder if I’ll come out of the supermarket some day and see it driving away.

Speaking of my Kia, I just got another recall notice. Something about a glitch in the software which could cause the engine to exceed pollution limits. They say they will reprogram the computer to correct that.

My question is will this degrade performance? When they fixed the VWs that were polluting it reduced both horsepower and gas mileage. I worry that it will do the same to mine.

Turns out the kids in Chicago bought a new car today. Was helping them from down here at home. Not sure if the got the 2019 Subaru Impreza Limited wagon with 15,400 miles and a minor accident or the 2023 Subaru Impreza Base model with almost no miles. Also don't know what became of their 2008 Subaru Impreza with 128,100 miles on it. Are they keeping it as a second vehicle or trading it in? Hopefully tomorrow we'll find out.
Worked till 5 today, we were busy & one guy left the moment he came in. Working again tomorrow so we'll see who shows up. We had only three today & hope for four tomorrow! Hopefully will find out about my new schedule Tuesday. Supposed to be swapping Wednesday to now work Monday's instead. Having two on, two off, one on and two off will be a much better schedule for my spinal issues. Think I'll be calling out less with some more time in between to rest my spine. And I'll be working with a lead driver who appreciates my hard work & wants me on his team. Due to a staffing change two weeks ago, a spot opened up about three hours after I was told this move wasn't possible at this time. Something happened in a short time frame to change that "no" to a "yes" for me from my boss. Not sure why but don't really care, my request for a change was finally approved!

After some snow in the middle of the week, this weekend brings 50 degree weather and sun, so decided to go look at some fun car options to fill the gap until the Integra Type S hits the market.

Wife and I looked at a used Golf R (2022 w/10k miles). They had pulled it into the showroom, so I didn’t bother to have them pull it out for a drive…at $5k more than original MSRP, they can keep it there.

Instead, we looked at a similarly used 2022 GTI…at $15k less. At least that was $5k less than original MSRP. Nice test drive on our own…overall it feels just like the last GTI we had, which is to say it felt quick and refined. VW’s haptic controls are annoying, but I’m sure you get used to it.

Also tried out a new WRX. Styling isn’t a strong suit, but I was surprised at how much more refined it felt compared to the last couple times I drove one (previous gen, like Q’s). Still engaging, but not as raw as the previous version, which I enjoyed, but I would guess turn off fans of all previous WRXs.

Finally familiarized myself with a Miata RF…sure is a tight fit for my height, but once you’re driving there’s not much else like it.

I could be patient and just keep the garage space open until the Acura is released, but what’s the fun in that? :)

I mentioned a while back that the Clubman would develop a misfire that was cured with a restart. Well, a couple of weeks ago the problem resurfaced and did not go away. The prior misfire had been in cylinder 2, so I had swapped that coil with the cylinder 1 coil. A quick scan with the Carly app showed that the misfire was now in cylinder 1. I decided to just go ahead and replace all four coils and plugs, since the coils were 14 years old. I ordered them from FCP Euro- four Bosch coils and four Bosch plugs cost $125.42. I could have used my BMW Reward cards at the dealer but it would have cost $222 more- I'd prefer to use the cards on upcoming services for the X1 and Club Sport. The swap took less than 45 minutes and after clearing the fault codes Carly gave the car a clean bill of health.

The funniest thing about those coils is they can be found in everything from a mini clubman and rolls Royce v12 of the era. Gotta love a common failure point.

a lot of that type of parts are common to fancy and plebian cars. Smart mechanics know how to cross reference! The brand on the box can lead to wildly different prices for an identical part.

the Car Wizard gives examples of this in some videos. Stuff like basic Ford parts that cross-reference to Jaguars. My favorite being that a 1990s era (460 maybe) Ferrari uses the exact same fuel pump as some oddball Kia hatchback. At about 1/10th the cost for the exact same part.

Kid's texted at midnight, 11 their time, they bought a car. As to what and other details, have no word yet. Honestly don't know if they went with the new with the trade-in or went with the 2019 Impreza Limited. Think going new was the best thing to do & not because it was the cheaper option. On keeping the 2008 Impreza for him to fiddle with & have a second vehicle if his wife needed the new one to go out, that could work also.
Guess I'll just have to wait to hear. Sure they must be excited no matter which way they went. His first new vehicle! The 2008 was new for her way back when they bought it.

Yes- a well-known issue. At least the coils are easy to replace. I still think that it was odd that the failure mode was intermittent.
How is the Elantra N doing? I have yet to read a bad review. It sounds like the car is a civilized evolution of. the Mazdaspeed 3. I'd take the N over any new sedan priced under $50k.

Coils do seem to go intermittently sometimes. When I had the 04 Grand Marquis I had one going out. If I didn’t drive the car for a few days and it was very damp I’d get a misfire and it would throw a CEL. It would go away after driving for a little bit and not come back for months

VW/Audi had horrible issues with coils in the early 2000s. A friend had a new 01 Passat and because of repeated faulty coils he was afraid to drive it in fear of another breakdown. He went back to buying Hondas

I loved the Passat of that era and didn’t buy one for that very reason. I seem to remember reading, probably here, about them failing within weeks or months of purchase and early on, people experiencing multiple failures.

‘23 WRXs are being discounted a fair amount in some places, so I’d avoid it in your case since you’ll want to sell it in a couple of weeks and get killed on depreciation. I believe mine is now worth more than a new ‘23, technically.

Just checked the dealers website. I was looking at preowned MB C class. I went with my son and the one we looked at had a lot of scratches and marks and was not worth it for a 2019. They had just received a MB C class 2020 with 8300 miles black exterior and saddle color interior. Wheels were nice but son complained he did not like chrome around doors. He wanted one with night package. Some lucky person picked up a cream puff. I am kind of disappointed he was being difficult.

I have watched a lot of this guy's videos. He is VERY good and I respect him tremendously. This just popped up on my feed. I'll let you figure out why I was so very happy to see it.

That reminds me of a friend of a friend who tried to inform me that the *fan* on the outside heat pump compressor reversed direction when it went from A/C to heat mode.

Yes- a well-known issue. At least the coils are easy to replace. I still think that it was odd that the failure mode was intermittent.

I seem to remember they never go at once but soon after each other. Why? Who knows.

How is the Elantra N doing? I have yet to read a bad review. It sounds like the car is a civilized evolution of. the Mazdaspeed 3. I'd take the N over any new sedan priced under $50k.

I absolutely it. Perfectly balanced handling, reasonably (but not insanely) quick, silly adjustable exhaust sounds, and a great transmission.

In Eco or Normal its a peppy, but not memorable drive - perfect for traffic or bad roads. I drive it in sport (not N) mode most of the time, because why not, and my wife tells me she can hear me coming from 2 blocks away. Sorry not sorry.

    The smiles/$ ratio remains high.

That's what I liked about the M235i and like about the C43; you can drive it either dialed back or in full attack mode.

Maybe you should introduce him to the wonder that is a used Chevy Spark.

Kids got the new 2023 Subaru Impreza Base model and love it. They decide to trade their 2008 with the oil leaks but will find out details tonight. Both seem happy to be done with it, as usually is the case. Will get details later...or as much as he wants to share. His first new car or car for that matter, she owned their 2008 all these years. Luckily they have a garage in their Chicago bungalow though it's not attached to the house. Better than nothing though.

Drove three different newer Hyundai's at work today and was impressed with all of them. A Sorrento, a Elantra & a Sonata. Mid trims all and drove very nicely. Decent amount of features and liked the cloth interior in the sedans but the Sorrento's looked a bit more upscale to be honest. All accelerated briskly with the Elantra being the least powerful though it did move when needed. Hyundai/Kia has certainly come a long long way over these past 30 or so years and is no longer a penalty box group of vehicles. Wouldn't be surprised to find either one or two next time we both purchase instead of a Toyota or Honda.
As we all know, I have a size constraint if I don't want to always park outside in the elements. But in my size vehicle, either have to buy in the basement as the saying goes or spend a whole lot of cash to get something decent. Would I be happy with a Hyundai Venue, a great value with the sizing I need but a bit lacking on the preferred creature comforts. Or do I blow the bank and shoot for the Mini Cooper CountrymanS & get it all in one package. Will spending large next time be the right answer here or will I go into sticker shock so much that I won't be able to truly enjoy it. I don't want that to happen but also don't want to be so underwhelmed that within a few months I'm looking again for that "fun factor" missing.
Not a real big problem for most people I'd say & really kind of silly but it is what it is. And yesterday, driving that MB GLC 300 was so much fun because the engine had no turbo lag with tons of power to spare...deep down what I really really want. To be able to just "GO" with that crazy bat sh-t power has to be infused in a nice looking smaller vehicle with top of the line audio. Now I ask you, is this too much to ask & what will give me all that in the small size package I have to have? The million dollar question has just been thrown down for G-d above to find me, going forward.

Sorry, I had to flag you because that video contained a prohibited individual. I know it hurts but I don’t make the rules.
