Ok, need some help. What’s the sea-foam green car in front of the silver A-H? Very pretty and familiar but I can’t put my finger on it. Grille is like an A-H but smaller and the creases around it are throwing me. Atrocious door fitment, though.

That is the Kaiser Darrin. Doors slide into the front fenders (like a pocket door) which is why they have big gaps.

The Elvew, never heard of it but I kinda like it. Other than the Saturn Vue part of it.

I also like those dodge charger Ute conversions. I do have weird taste.

So I saw the Giulia QV at church yesterday.

We were leaving at the same and he REALLY wanted to play. This time I was glad my wife was riding shotgun as I’m sure he would have cleaned my clock- at least in a straight line(the QV is 0.8 seconds quicker than my C43 in the quarter mile).
I do wish Alfa sold a Giulia that slotted in between the Veloce and the QV- something that competed with the C43 and M340i.
Funny thing, on the Giulia forums there are discussions about the dimwits who put QV emblems on their base Giulias- shades of the poseurs with their ///M badges…

I have no problem when the car is an M Sport or an M Performance car- it’s when the emblem alone is the only M related item on the car.

Yep those are most common for both - typical German car thing I guess. A handful of other colors made it over for both cars - back in the day when AMG models were still quite limited in sales, triple digits yearly for both of those I think.

@laurasdada A postscript to your comment on the weak A/C in your 5 Series loaner...
Most all BMWs from the late '90s on had what BMW called a "stratification wheel" on the dash:

It allowed you to adjust the air temperature of the face-level vents independent of the main temperature setting. It was eliminated in BMW's attempt to obliterate anything that made BMWs unique(aside from hideous front facias). However, the temperature of the vents on a 5er can still be adjusted by accessing a setting hidden in a submenu. My guess is that your loaner had that setting adjusted to the warm side of the temperature range.
Simplifying by adding complexity- great job, Munich.

Got out a bit for car shopping with my youngest son. We’re ready to retire the 2012 MDX that has gone through his mom’s ownership, then handed down to my older son and now is at 154k miles after spending a couple years with the youngest kid.

Started at Subaru where we reacquainted ourselves with the Crosstrek, now refreshed for 2024. They also had a used Mazda CX-30. My son states he likes the Crosstrek better, but then admired the few Legacy sedans on the lot. Turns out he’s really attracted to a sporty sedan look more so than the hatches/compact SUVs, which is music to my years, both because he appreciates the traditional sedan look, and they tend to offer so much more for your money.

So he takes out a Legacy with the 2.5l and immediately prefers it. He of course liked the Sport model (with the turbo), but I kindly state it’s likely too much (in many ways).

@michaell reminded me the Altima and Camry are now offered with AWD, so we checked out the Nissan, which has now taken first place for my son. I mean, the performance and handling isn’t anything to write home about, but it sure is a comfortable, practical vehicle, and pretty darn sharp in the SR trim.

I might squeeze in a stop at a dealer today. A treat for the wife! If the looking at houses goes nowhere I can bait and switch into a sports car!

But that pivots back to either a new house or getting rid of the Acura because I hate parking something nice outside…..

I don’t know if it’s an update or if I hadn’t noticed it before, but the navigation system in the C43 not only points out parking lots/garages but also denotes(in some cases) how full they are:

Does the yellow on the vertical bar mean occupied and the red means available? And what does the circle with the red triangle attempt to show? These systems remain a closed book to me.

And the nav also gives the price of PUG when gas stations are shown. The telematics aren't overly complex, but it seems I learn something new about it most every day.

Red indicates the spaces occupied. The emblem above the "P" indicates a multi-story parking garage. The circle diameter is 600 feet but that is adjustable. The triangle denotes the location of the car.

yes I (somewhat unexpectedly) actually landed a new "real" job. So back on the hamster wheel for a while. No where near as enjoyable as early retirement, but pays a lot better which will likely come in handy at some point.

The house deal, when we found this house we talked ourselves into giving up a couple of things we wanted to actually get something (in the budget I had settled on). It is a nice house and we enjoy the neighborhood but wish we had gotten a little bit bigger in some areas (wife still complains that the dining area is not big enough and I really regret not holding out for an oversized garage. We both regret not getting a large mudroom off the garage). And we could have splurged and gotten something more expensive at the time.

Yes, I imagine with the two of you trying to dine in that room it must be sheer hell... :D

Didn't you actually buy that Maverick #2 a year or so ago? It was only finally available 6 weeks ago, right?

On the new job, it sounds like some of it involves travel or at least going to an office?

    The entertainment never ends... :D

Seriously though, I get that you made the move somewhat quickly so I do understand how you might be seeing some compromises with the new place. I remember the drama around the steps in the garage. But you're a better man than me if you are already considering another relocation. I can't imagine doing that again. Especially since you've probably finally just gotten everything unpacked.

You do keep things interesting here though.

When I had my Fusion, the GPS would show the buildings. In a city, such as Pittsburgh, you could see the US Steel building and others. Sort of weird.

    Glad I can entertain you.

my position is remote, home office (where mostly everyone else in my team works) is Dallas. So I will be going there on some regular basis. Probably more early on since I am still trying to actually learn the job. once I get that under my belt won't be too much of an issue.

on the cars, here is the timing. I got interested in Q3 2021, after they had started taking orders but well before deliveries. I ordered the 1st one 9/16/2021. Was planning on Hybrid, but someone here scared me off that so I switched to Ecoboost (and cheaped out not getting luxury package). A month later I decided I should have ordered differently so on 10/20/2021 I ordered a 2nd one (hybrid/no uxury).

for some reason the EB got selected early for build and I purchased it NYE 2021. The Hybrid never got selected to build so in September 2022 it rolled over to a 2023 order. At that point I was living in the frigid north so upgraded to the luxury package. That got a build date in February and I purchased it in May of this year. And now I am done ordering Mavericks and waiting.

for the house, as noted, shopping remote was very difficult. quick weekend trips a couple times a month, only got to see what happened to be available that Saturday. Anything nice was under contract within a few days. We were actually up here on a Thursday night (took extra day on Friday to look too) when this house got listed so my agent got us a viewing Saturday morning. It is actually very nice and pushed a lot of buttons, but we only had a short visit and pictures to decide off of, and we kind of glossed over a few things (either did not realize it would be an issue, like the garage size and layout, or decided we could live with, like smaller dining area and no defined mudroom).

Nothing that is a deal breaker but things that if we could do it over, would make sure we had. So the point of looking is treating this house as our transition place, instead of renting something for a while to live in while we shopped. Looking local is vastly easier! And one of the places we are looking into (new build) is 2 neighborhoods over and connected to ours, and we walk through there on a regular basis so would be very easy to keep track of progress, and move eventually!

moving will be much simpler now too, since we did most of the hard lifting purge work last time. and a lot of stuff we kept is still in the same boxes. So that will not be a big deal.

most important though is thoroughly developing the must have list, and not compromising on any of it, because if we do this we are going to stay here until we kick the bucket. We could have spent more last time, so might as well do it now since I am working!

It all depends how it’s cared for. Son #1 bought a ‘13 G37 in ‘15 and it looks very good today. Of course he took care of it well. A couple months ago he turned it over to his 21 year old son. I saw it in his driveway the other day and it looks even better than when his father turned it over to him. I think you could use it to shave.

If the $$$ make sense both on the selling and buying side, what you said here strikes me as very reasonable. Do you have a deed transfer tax there? That is what really grinds my gears here. The city charges a 1.5% tax on the sale price of every property to the buyer. The house across the street just sold for $505K, so that’s a $7500 bill from the city for changing the owner name on their database. Just criminal. I’d hate to do that twice in 2 years.

Part of me would consider moving, but the problem here is that even though I’d benefit from a very overheated market on the sale, getting a place I’d like better would likely cost me even more.

And you ARE very entertaining, stick! 👍

Nissan/Infiniti was using a special paint or clearcoat on black vehicles which was supposedly swirl resistant for at least the first few years. At the time, detail guys who did paint correction said it was extremely difficult to work with, but perhaps they have figured out the correct combinations of product to use by now.

I am not sure. but it is NY so entirely possible!

the big annoyance tax I remember was a mortgage fee. I think in our county it was .75% (neighboring counties were 1%). So a $400k mortgage got you for any lender nonsense, including a 2nd set of title insurance (still not sure why we needed 2 policies, other than "lawyers"), and then had to pay $3,000 to the county for the privilege of borrowing money (reminded me of a lease origination fee). So the goal if we do this is work out something to not need a mortgage at all (or at least just a small one) instead of taking out a big one and paying it off when the old place sells.

the numbers, well, once I get some more new build quotes and a more exact analysis from my agent on this place, I can figure out what the upcharge will be! But she seems to think we have done well enough already to get out with a net profit.

all this is speculative for now. But a new build has the advantage of not being ready until sometime in the spring, so perfect time to put the old place on the market!

So does the nav on the C43 to a point- and so did the system on the M235i. It's a bit distracting.

That must have been a long time ago if it showed The US Steel Building. It’s been the UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) headquarters for a while now.

EDIT: This post should have been in response to the one @venture made that is shown above.

I think it will always be the US Steel building. :p

I forgot UPMC is buying the whole town.

I still call it the US Steel Building myself. Some of the youngins today don’t know what I’m talking about. They also don’t remember when batters in baseball didn’t wear batting gloves and walked up to the plate without music.

she hates hot or humid. Zero chance she would agree to move south. Plus we are here because all the family is. Best I can hope for someday is a 3 month snowbird deal like Driver does.

she also did not enjoy the logistics of the moving experience, so even going through it one more time will be a stretch for her. Most likely that will be it if we do get a new one now. Well, at least until we are old enough to need to not be in a single family house any longer, but that should not be for a long time.
