What a mess! I pinged the Nissan dealer yesterday about the registration on the Ariya and they replied that they are working on it, but are backed up. Not that they could have done it anyway, as the Jefferson County Clerk has had issues transitioning to new software, and just this week was hit with a ransomware attack.

I’ve not received anything on the Grand Cherokee either

Wow. I’ve never heard of anything like that. What are you looking at?

We're targeting some of these great lease deals on EVs, especially the ones that work in the Colorado credit up front. The Hyundai/Kia/Genesis products are on the list (Ioniq 5, GV60, GV70, EV9) and we may stop at the Nissan dealership to check out the Ariya (happy to hear more feedback from you @corvette).

We wouldn't be opposed to another Tesla, but current lease deals aren't all that great, and of course we're gun shy about their operations right now.

I got my monthly email from the local Honda dealer and one of the specials is a lease deal on the new EV (name escapes me). EX version, MSRP about 52K. I assume it is Honda's version of the ZDX I sat in. Might have to stop in and take one for a ride. I have never actually driven an EV and only had a ride in one once (a Mach E that was absurdly quick).

@breld - be truthful... If the Tesla had gotten registered, it would have been traded in before now! :D

I still really like the Ariya. The Engage trim is very well equipped, although lacking a sunroof and a power liftgate. The seats are comfortable, and the ride is fairly soft. The interior is nicely appointed, although the storage space has some shortcomings: the center console is power adjustable front to rear, but contains an inaccessible void. I was only able to fit a couple of garage door openers, pen, and a miniature package of tissues under the armrest. There are two glove compartments, but when opened, they lay almost flat, so anything cylindrical is apt to roll out onto the floor. The carpeted floor mats appear to be of very high quality, and were resistant to having dog hair stick to them, from the one time I had my doggo in the car. The rear glass is not tinted, which is odd for an SUV, although I suppose they could have classified it as a car for emissions credit purposes, which would preclude offering rear tint from the factory. I think the styling is pretty sharp--it reminds me of a Lexus. The copper accents in the interior are also nice.

I'd definitely prefer the larger battery, but it's still an excellent local runabout with the smaller one, and should work for short to medium length road trips. You wouldn't want to attempt 1,000 miles in a day, but I wouldn't do that in a longer range EV or a gas vehicle either.

I'm hopeful there is a software update for the issue I had with the MIL illuminating and throwing a code related to the DC fast charging. We should find out next week when I have a service appointment.

These were both original to the car (about 140K miles). The top one is from the passenger brake caliper; the bottom one is from the driver side.....

So, I imagine that I complained about this elusive rattle in my suspension on the Forester before. It was ongoing for around two years and was beginning to make me lose my mind! Loud and persistent, it was absolutely impossible for me to isolate (and fix) it.

Finally, just over the weekend, my son had an issue with his car (rear brake caliper locked up) causing him to need to bench the car for a few days while waiting on parts. Now that I have my Q7 again, I let him use my Forester. That night, he comes home saying, "I think I figured out what is causing your rattle." :o

He said that every time he pressed the brakes, even just a little bit, the rattle was completely gone, regardless of how rough the road was. The moment he let off the brakes, the rattle was back. He took me out for a demo ride, and sure enough... that was exactly what happened! I had never noticed the correlation before. So, I pull the wheel off the car, inspect the brake caliper... and it turns out that a slide pin on the caliper was just totally shot. Like.... TOTALLY shot!

I went to the parts store, paid $20 for a new set of pins and boots for the front end, spent about an hour on the car (mostly to recondition the terribly rusted slide receiver on the caliper bracket), and had it put back together.... NO RATTLE! Chalk one up in the rare "Wins" category!

Well, yesterday, we received a letter via UPS from Tesla stating that the leasing company has revoked their contract due to “our failure” to register the vehicle, and that Tesla would be finding a new financing company to take over the lease.

After some calls and email exchanges with Tesla to clarify where the fault lies, the end result is they offered to take the car back, obviously without any penalties or fees. We suspect there was something off with that vehicle…like there was some mix-up with the VIN, and their “offer” is really a way for them to get the vehicle back and avoid any additional issues.

So…we’re shopping for a new EV.

Used Teslas on the secondary market have become pretty darned cheap. Might be a better move since it wouldn’t be with you long. Cut down on the loss.

My ability to judge car values has been totally destroyed by the pandemic disruptions. All I know is that I bought a 2010 loaded Ford Fusion with 29k miles for $8150 four years ago. Does Subaru have the kind of following that a 15 year old version is still worth $10k?

I fear my question may be rhetorical since most cars for sale today are in the 100k+ mileage category. Low mile cars are really rare.

just had the Acura oil change done since the wrench icon was on. about 1 week or 2 short of a year since the last one. Only about 3,000-3,500 miles I think. At this pace might hit 10 years before we get to 50k miles.

update for Bradd. the real estate flipping might not have to stop (well, other than the wife saying NO). our RE agent stopped by to see the place (she never actually saw it before we closed). Of course I asked her for an appraisal. She said she would run actual comps but based on a quick eval (and seeing how it turned out) she thinks we are sitting on ~90k over what we will have in it after our patio and shed are done (sometime in August hopefully). At this pace I might be able to retire in a few years after all (even if I have to get one of those Magnum PI reverse mortgages!)

Could come in handy since building a new house and updating furniture and having 2 weddings in the space of 12 months, is not particularly budget friendly!

When we lived in SC we went to Hilton Head more times than I can count. One year in mid July (maybe 1994) when our Sons visited, the water temp for a few days was 92 F. Hard to believe but true. One of those days as we were leaving I ask a park ranger what the water temp was and he looks at the large digital display and says, “right now 92 degrees”. I said, “yeah, I see that too but that can’t be right”. He goes on to tell me that NOAA was monitoring the ocean temp for some long term study and told me if I didn’t believe him, I should come down to the point where they place the probes at 6 AM and watch them calibrate the probes every morning before they drop them in the water. There was no way I was going to get up that early and watch multiple temp probe calibrations. So I believed him because that’s what it felt like.

Every time I tell this story I get weird unbelievable looks. The water was only refreshing for the instant you first got in, after that it was literally like taking a bath.

60 isn’t refreshing. 60 is downright cold. The tap water in my house is warmer than 60 at this time of the year.

Last year while at Myrtle Beach we met a couple from southern CA. They decided to see how much warmer the Atlantic is vs. the Pacific. They were amazed that the temp was in the mid 80’s late last July. Said they would be back for the large sauna next year. They thought it was great.

Good luck with the knee, Q.

Let us know what type of car the surgeon drives. And if you bought it.

Thanks. But not the knee. That was a few years ago. This is Nissen fundoplication to fix a severe hiatal hernia.

I haven’t eaten solid food since the end of June. Down 12 lbs so far.
