Then it makes sense. Rears are bigger than front on his Genesis. He got 10K miles out of them before he should have replaced them.

As the other M-B owners here probably know, their mobile app is now simply known as "Mercedes Benz." Pretty clever- right? Anyway, I visited the updated website and decided to take a shot at updating the navigation map. It was pretty easy, but a bit slow: the data is downloaded to a thumb drive and then the drive is plugged into the USB port connected to the car's telematics. The update took about 20 minutes to load followed by a restart of the COMAND system. Done and dusted.

I know I mentioned previously about the kid (29 yrs old) down the street buying a used high-mileage Golf R. Think he paid around $16K for it.

He was back in town for a wedding, and I asked him how it was doing. $9000 in mechanical repairs, including some interior engine bits. :o

Ehhh, there's some variables to consider though. Is it a daily driver? Modified mechanically? Have a lot of deferred maintenance before buying? Uninformed buyer?

Yeah I’d like to know more about that - and that’s the issue with used Golf Rs (or any other mid cost performance cars, particularly) - you’re buying the previous owners as much as you are the car.

That's exactly it.. on most used purchases, you don't know. And, he definitely didn't.

I like the innocence of youth.. that you could just purchase a high-performance car with high mileage, and it would be all sunshine and roses..

All joking aside. This is what scares me to death about buying an older used car, even if it has lower than average mileage. What did they do to the car? How was the car used? Did they just do oil changes & tire rotations or did they take care of all preventative maintenance? Are all the rubber seals and suspension bushings almost dried out?

While it’s true, you don’t know, it’s possible to improve your odds. First off I’d never buy a highly modified car of any type and certainly not one that appeals to the younger set. Second, I’d want records, the more the better. You can also look for oil change stickers. If the last one was 10k miles ago, run.

I know it anathema to this crowd but I look for regular transportation cars rather than sports cars. If it was owned by and older person so much the better. Less chance grandma was drag racing on her way to Walgreen’s than if the owner was 18.

Those Golfs are fun to drive. The few times I’ve had the opportunity, you just feel the urge to drive them aggressively. I can imagine it’s only more so with the R version.

That said, $25k for one with 75k miles seems dear.

    I had a '77 Mustang Cobra II with a 302 V-8 and 4-speed.

It was rated at 135 HP.

The torque of the V-8 made it pretty quick through 2nd gear, but that only got you up to 50 mph. It had the world's tiniest 2-bbl carb.

Just looked online at my local VW store and they have a few Golf GTI 2.0T SE's for sale, a couple white pearl/black and a Moonstone Gray/black. I prefer the Moonstone Gray actually. Not a fan of the one piece tall front bucket seats but wouldn't be a deal killer by any means. Just wish they had the easy 2-knob infotainment systems without having to go through multiple windows to get what you want. Same goes with the HVAC system which again, seems to difficult to use. A positive is the 9 speaker Harman Kardon sound system which should sound close to the same Fender system I've got right now. They're pricey at $39,044.00 with a possible $2K cash back until the end of the month.

Looks enticing and with my 70th birthday about a week away. But, pricey however one looks at it and just need to decide if I want to spend about $32K plus my car to get it. Guess I have a lot of thinking to do. The size constraint isn't an issue since it's the same dimensions as what I've currently got now. Just something I'm going to have to think about these next few days.
