I love that sentence----"IT ripped part of the center console".....I didn't do it....IT did it.

Also his price estimates to repair things is much too low.

"Exotic" Lancia Zagato --- someone please tell him it's a Fiat with a funny roof. A travesty of the once-glorious names of Lancia and Zagato. Dull as an infomercial.

2005 Salvage Porsche --Ah, another member of the Telephone Pole Seekers of America Driving Club (the TPSADC).

Qvale Mangusta -- a "staggering" 6800 rpm limit? Why, that's modern mini-van territory--LOL! Hard sell, nobody wants this car.

2007 Porsche -- holy crap, an $1875 a month lease, into which he installed a custom $7000 stereo. Wonder what the leasor is going to think about THAT. This man must be stopped before he leases again. Not a sober consumer it seems.

1999 M Convertible --seems fair enough.

The '73 GTO didn't do it all by itself, but probably helped kill Pontiac. They only built around 4800 of them that year. Something like 4250 of them had the standard 230 hp 400, while only around 550 had the 455, which had 250 hp. The mighty had definitely fallen.

There was a high-output 455 that had 310 hp, which was supposed to be made available for the Grand Am, Grand Prix, and GTO, but in the end it only went in the Trans Am. I'm sure if it had been made available, it would have been quite a brute.

And if nothing else, at least Pontiac still kept the GTO fairly high in the HP pecking order that year. While 230 hp isn't much to brag about, the Grand Am, which was basically Pontiac's attempt at a more luxurious musclecar, and a step up in price, just had a 170 hp 400-2bbl standard.

What's more pathetic is the 1974 GTO based on the Nova platform:

    image

Of course, this is the most pathetic "muscle?" car of them all!

I don't think the Coyote would've had a problem catching this Road Runner!
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,023
Oh it got worse. For 1976, the Roadrunner moved to the Volare platform! As for the GTO, I always wondered which would win in a drag race...the '73 with its 230 hp 400-4bbl or the '74, with its 200 hp 350-4bbl? I've seen the '74 quoted as fast as 0-60 in 7.7 seconds if you got the 4-speed, but never have seen a time for a '73.

That gray car beside the Roadrunner above almost looks like my old '89 Gran Fury. Except that mine didn't have the spotlight on the A-pillar, and the only time my Gran Fury ever went to Carlisle, I was put way up on the hill, which was sort of a no-man's land back then. I think that pic above might have been taken back when they still had the "Simmer Summer Carlisle" event, which was usually small enough that they actually had spectator parking on the fairgrounds.

How 'bout a Buick Regal T Type---you can go real fast for cheap.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,023
How much are the T-types going for these days? Seems like the Grand Nationals are getting out of reach, and the GNX has always been sort of untouchable, at least to my wallet!
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
They seemed to be priced all over the map but I'd think you could buy a really nice one for $5000--$10000, as nice as you'd ever want.

This is not a T-Type related comment, but I noticed an interesting thing a couple weeks back in Rapid City, SD.

My wife had stopped at a clinic there to get her glasses repaired, so I had about 45 minutes to wander around the lawns outside the building giving both my daughter and dog a walk. As I passed the six parking spaces reserved for "handicapped" patrons, I noted that five of the six vehicles were Buick. The sixth? An Oldsmobile. I bet that was not necessary a common event, but it certainly grabbed my attention and made me chuckle.

I like the 300ZX. It is rarte to find an unmolested example with decent mileage. From the looks of it I think this one is a 2+2 model although the seller does not mention it.

  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,107
I like that 300ZX, too. With all the good 3.0-3.5L v6 engines that Nissan, Honda, and Toyota make, I've wondered why there aren't more sports cars like this. No turbo is better to me. I wouldn't want a 2+2, but I'd live with it to get one this clean. I prefer this model's looks over the 350/370Z. I just hope he's better at taking care of the car than he is at spelling (including his name!?).
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,737
I was thinking 2+2 as well. He probably doesn't mention it because that means it is over 3500 lbs and not much of a sportscar without the turbo.

I never liked that style. I much prefer my Z31. :)
And I gotta go against texases. The 350z is one of the sexiest [affordable] cars on the road, IMHO.

Yeah, weight's a problem. I wish they built it to barely handle the 3l engine w/o the turbo, that'd take the pounds out. Kind of like a Miata, but designed for a 3l.

Aurora Northstar -- would make a great name for a heroine in a detective novel, but not a great used car. Probably typical Northstar head gasket issue and a very dead engine. Parts car.

Volvo 850 -- priced fairly at $800---parts are expensive for these suckers and no doubt he has pursued the bad idle issue until he's sick of trying. I'd take a shot at it.

76 Mustang Ghia V8--- price is fair enough. Nasty looking engine compartment though.

64 Wildcat-- price is exactly market correct for "fair" condition.

79 Fiat -- for that money it should be clean and running. Worth maybe $750 bucks--seats look shot, engine looks like it hasn't run in years. No upside here. You could get $1500 in the UK for it.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,423
A grand for a beater W126? Why not...gas is still cheap, drive it til it dies, then part it out. I'm sure it's a clunker, but it's better looking than most in that price range.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
I'd consider the Benz, and the Wildcat, but the rest I'd junk.

The Aurora is in too much of dissassembly to make it worth while fixing. You can probably find a running example for about a grand more.

The Grand Prix looks ok too so a Pontiac fan with a lower trim Grand Prix might pick it up, swap in the functioning parts into the white one, and have a loaded car for little money.

That's what the Silvia/180SX was for. 175-200 hp in a roughly 2500-pound coupe.

I have a tried and true method for buying cars like that old Benz. You start it up, let it idle while you play with every knob and switch. Make a list of what doesn't work. Then get out of the car, lift the hood, look for leaks, smoke and noise, top and bottom. Then get back in, look for overheat.

Then take it for a ride and drive the hell out of it---stress the car. Go back, park it, and look again top and bottom.

You'll know everything you need to know in about 20 minutes and decide.

Can you live without AC? Yeah

Can you live without heat and defrost? No

4 bad tires? How much is that gonna cost me?

Can I live without a sunroof? Yeah

Check engine light? REJECT (at least in California---can't pass smog).
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,107
Re - that Benz - don't know why, but I'd also ask "can you live with the smell". That pic of the interior makes me wonder...
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,688
Oh, yeah. That's a big one! I bought an Escort from a friend last summer. It was, overall, in fairly decent shape. The interior was very good.... aside from being extremely "doggy-ized." The hair, I figured, was something I could clean out. But, after the first hot day, I decided the odor was overwhelming and took it to a detail shop. They did a great job, and now the interior is nice, clean, and nearly free of dog odor, but not quite (especially on hot days).

Old Benzes always seem to smell bad. I think it's something with the upholstery in the 80s. Smells like burnt electrics.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,423
Ponton guy needs to tell us what model he has and put the bumpers back on. If it's really really nice, he's not too far off, but I suspect he's a few grand high.

It's a whole new ballgame in the old car hobby. With restoration costs so high, and paint and bodywork prohibitive, old pedestrian common cars lying around are just dreams for most people--that will never become a reality anymore unless they are already "hot" in the market. You could hold onto 99% of the cars on craigslist for another 50 years and they won't be worth a penny more than when you bought them. And that 1% we all already know about.

What will survive are used cars in very very nice condition.

Gargantuan money pit and probably pretty boring to drive.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
If I'm not mistaken, this is one of the models that requires engine/out for any servicing. Figure maybe $1.50 per mile to drive it + fuel and insurance...so maybe 5,000 miles a year for $10K. This does not include repairs of any kind.
  • lokkilokki Member Posts: 1,200
All of the expenses of driving a Ferrari with none of the fun....

I think that 21K miles over 24 years tells you how much fun this one is.

Sometimes I think there's a law that the sadder the Ferrari the bigger the prancing horse on the front fender has to be
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
On the "low end" of the Ferrari scale, a 4-valve injected 308 is the way to go.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,107
"I think that 21K miles over 24 years tells you how much fun this one is."

875 miles/year = "I'd better take it out for a drive, or the wife won't let me keep it around any more."
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Most Ferraris are very low miles.

You can't sell a high mileage Ferrari to anyone, even a modern Ferrari. At about 60,000 miles, they are essentially parts cars in terms of value.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
Back in a previous wife-time, I was a big Isuzu fanatic. The wife drove an '86 P'up and we also owned an '88 Trooper (4000 pounds and 120HP - woo hoo!).

Strangely enough, I actually liked the "Space Cab" concept, though if I were to get one, it would have been 4WD and had the optional 31" tires. Probably killed the mileage, however.

That Accord certainly doesn't look like it has 45K original miles ... but, having been to NY (both the city as well as LI and Westchester) a number of times on business (not to mention having family in the area), I guess any car parked there for over 20 years is bound to look like that.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,737
I don't get it. Why would a complete standard-looking Bug draw a crowd anywhere? Does he pop the engine lid everywhere he goes?

$8k? Seriously? That will be a permanent fixture in his yard for sure.

What sometimes boggles my mind with craigslist is the silly keywords people type in to draw attention to their ad.

Does that seller really think anyone looking for a Honda S2000, an Infiniti Q45, a Benz, a Caddy Escalade, or a Navigator would stumbe upon this ad and buy that Isuzu pickup instead? :confuse:

It must be the sound of the electric bug (or lack thereof) that draws the attention.
An air-cooled bug makes quite a distinctive clatter. The quiet whine of the electrics must seem very odd coming from an ancient Beetle. :surprise:
  • jlflemmonsjlflemmons Member Posts: 2,242
That bug is little more that a golf cart with a bug-body. Seriously, that has got to be one of the worst performing conversions I have ever seen.

That little Isuzu truck comes from the generation of Isuzu trucks that were dang near bullet proof.
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
Yeah, but there is no way that truck gets 35 mpg. I had a '91 4-cylinder 5-speed regular cab shortbed, and it got 27-28 or so. The diesel would get 35 in that body with an automatic, but Isuzu never sold an oilburner in that body here.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
