I'd be curious what Shifty thought of that Eldo, wow that's high.

That Camry is crazy clean, seems like a good price.

Where in the US does one get all those parts for that Austin?

That Eldo is very elegant looking, but no under hood or underneath pictures.
Selling for 'my uncle' doesn't inspire confidence either.

The Córdoba is in absolutely remarkable condition. Original spare tire has never been on the ground. But they should have ordered the leather seats. That cloth upholstery is very odd.

The apparent condition of the chrome interior/dash trim on the Caddy doesn't give me confidence in the thoroughness of the restoration, either. Pretty car though.

    Cordoba hubcaps are kinda cool.

Camry would do very well at a Radwood event.

More progress again tonight. The wheel studs we picked up on Sunday work perfectly for the application, which is a relief because we spent hours going through store inventory to try to find the right ones!

Anyhow, we got the new studs into the wheel hubs tonight, along with repacking the bearings and mounting it on the van. After that, the rotors and calipers were a very quick install. Unfortunately, I do not think that the brake lines I bought are sufficient for the job. They are 15" long, which is the same as the originals, and the part recommended for the build, but with full extension on the suspension (as it sits now), they are really pushed to their max. I fear that a hard bump on the road and they might just break under the pressure. So, a few extra inches in order. I think I will see about getting some custom manufactured units from a local business. They build some brake lines for my plow truck a few winters ago: Inexpensive and perfect fit.

And, damn this program! No image attaching again tonight. It's so flaky.

Okay the pull down image attach didn't work for me this morning but when I typed it manually it still works like before.

Interesting that it let you type. Yesterday I tried to paste a URL into the image box and it wouldn't let me. Neither a right-click Paste command nor a CTRL-V was accepted.

I used to have a model of a Ford Econoline Chateau, same body style as the 69, with working twin-I-beam suspension. It had good detail and was one of my favorites. IIRC it was a model kit from AMT. When we moved England, my model collection along with other items got the toss, sadly. Dad explained we (the family) had to minimize our belongings given the expense of moving and that we would be living in a much smaller home.

When I was a young teenager I built a lot of models. First cars, then later on in the mid-70s, over-the-road tractors. I remember a few favorites: a '67 Fairlane, a '70 Challenger, and several of the big rigs. As my skill progressed I got more ambitious with painting, doing silver outlines on the chrome trim on the cars, trying to paint the engines and interiors correctly, and doing the multi-color paint jobs on the big rigs. Problem was that got expensive and they took up a lot of space. When I got older I really didn't care to keep them, and I'm not sure that was a bad idea. You can only handle so much stuff.

I'd think that '54 Lincoln would do better at an auction. Buyers for that era must be getting scarce.

It might be the nicest '54 Lincoln 4-door on the planet. But it's a '54 Lincoln 4-door, not a really attractive car at all.

Recently a Combi on BaT resulted in an interesting discussion on fast VW buses like this. The wise people on there were saying you don't want one unless you want to kill yourself. Dodgy brakes, poor handling, high CG, poor to nonexistent crashworthiness. This is one of the few cases where slower is better.

I wonder if the Amos Minter T-Bird shop is taking a hit. They're about a mile from my house, always have something pretty in the window. Their listings are in the $50k-$100k range:

I was thinking that Ford shortbox 4x4 would be more like 10K, but those do seem to be more scarce than squarebodies in nice shape, supply matters.

54 Lincoln is amazing looking, but kind of a white elephant for enthusiasts under 50 or so - they just can't relate to the car, and it was a sedate looking car even when new.

And good call @tjc78 , I remember the guy Jennifer Jason Leigh's character has a tryst with drives one, sticks in my mind just for that.

That's it, the guy from the mall. He must have been skilled with a car like that, I think those were pretty dear then.

We must have quite similar tastes in movies - although I was younger than a teen when those and most John Hughes films were released, I've always enjoyed many of that era.

I saw many on cable TV when I was a kid (TV = babysitter). The Hughes films in particular have fantastic car casting, he knew what he was doing. I also enjoyed the idealized version of teenage life he portrayed, although I later learned it was insanely unrealistic.

The F150 should be gone in no time at that price. And, the '89 Camry.... probably the best buy of the lot today. $1,700, lots of life left, comfortable cruising sedan.

I wouldn't have wanted to buy a 91 Camry, when the 92 was such a huge leap forward.

To this day I think the 92-96 are such a great design.

Well, you know I like the land yacht! That brown and a green seemed really common on big Buick's and Old's in those days.

The 97 Camry set in motion a Toyota blandness theme which reigned for eons and is likely a factor in their overdone styling of late ("we're not boring! we promise! look! we have big grilles and lots of slashes and lines everywhere!")

92-96 Camry and 90-93 Accord were it, 94-97 Accord right after.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,107
I was amazed at how blah the '97 Camry was, after the great '92-'96. The '97 reminded me of poor Mopar designs of the time.

Very true. Especially from an interior design and comfort standpoint, the '92 was amazing! However, from a quality-of-machine standpoint, the prior generation was an excellent car. It just didn't look as skookum or have as much ear leg room.

Okay, so follow up photos. I decided to just post these on Facebook and try to link them here, since uploading is fubar here for the time being.

As noted previously, we were able to get the longer wheel studs, reassemble the hubs, add the rotors and calipers, and yesterday I had some brake lines custom made that are fully compatible with the original hardware on the van. It turned out well for now.... but the real test comes on the road (I am hopeful... the old drums set a rather low bar...)!

It’s great to see that your son is helping with the project. I fondly remember dad and his good friend who was an excellent mechanic showing me how to tune up my Honda CT-70 and SL125, change oil and other tasks. They both impressed upon the the importance of regular and thorough maintenance which I am now trying to also impress on my 17 yo daughter. She looks at me like, really?

The disc brake conversion looks like it could be original to the van. Are you installing a brake proportioning valve to balance the front to rear bias? Great job!

Indeed, nice work on those brakes, looks good. I remember wrenching with my dad when I was a kid, especially on the hobby cars he picked up when I was a teen. A few incidents made me stick to just basic maintenance checks, and leave big jobs for someone with experience B)
