Regarding mileage, just drove a 400 mile trip and was able to get approx 19 mpg. Don't want to sound negative because I love the car, but it sure would be nice if it had a larger fuel tank. What are others getting for mpg?
Is it an old wife's tale not to wax a new car within 6 months of acquisition? Is there a protective coating applied on the car that eliminates the need for waxing? Doing my best to keep this car looking like showroom new and was just curious.
I agree with your gas tank comment, it is a little small for the big hemi. It would be nice to go more than 300-400 miles between stops.
I have also been told that you do not need to wax clearcoat paint, but I do. just be sure to use a newer formula safe for clear coat finishes as some products have too much abrasive and that's the bad stuff.
Yes, with modern base coat/clear coat paints, you can wax the minute you take delivery. The paint is baked/cured at the factory.
Is there a protective coating applied on the car that eliminates the need for waxing?
Nope. But use a polymer wax, not a carnauba-based one.
I'd like to request some substantiation of this claim!!
also, just finished brake update at dealer. 4 new rotors and new pads should correct problem. brakes feel great, we'll put some miles on them this weekend and let everyone know. I am surprised at the interest level at the dealer. they seem to actually want to help!
I am in a car show this Sunday with my 66 GTO, I am thinking of taking the SRT8 also but I don't want to look stupid. Its mostly muscle car people and I think it will be well received. Has anyone taken theres to a car show? Any thoughts?
Due to new pad materials I will probably follow old school and just ride 'em real easy for a few hundred miles and then use 'em as needed.
As rare as these cars are I cannot imagine any car enthusiast not wanting a closer look. I was at the local Dodge dealer recently and it emptied the service and sales areas as EVERYONE wanted a look! No kidding about 25 people in a crowd around the car.
There are no substantive changes at all. There have been running changes to the stereo system, the brakes, wheels, and one new color. Oh, and some software issues with engine management programming. basically they are identical in almost every respect.
Remember, the car was created by gearheads for gearheads!!!!
perhaps event is open to new owners? sounds like it should be fun. did not schedule the drag race. wondering now if I should?
It turned out to be a pretty good weekend for car-spotting. Friday I saw a Lamborghini Murcielago traveling down the freeway. It was nice. I also saw one of those dyno queen Supras yesterday. It was just tooling along the freeway at the speed limit. I could smell the race gas burning. Must've been running rich.
At 3458 miles I took my car in to have the oil changed and one of the instructors from Skip Barber was there and informed me of the track experience at the Homestead Motor Speedway. All dealers are suppose to tell new owners about this program since you pay for it... That's right, when you purchase an SRT you have already paid for the experience. If you want to take a friend it's $300 and if you want to take a spectator (I don't recommend going without participating) it's $40. They give you a continential breakfast and a box lunch. Trust me, you don't go for the food.... It's the experience... My same friend went to the AMG program and paid $1,200 and he said this was much better. They had an 8th mile strip set up in the pits and let us race the Crossfire, 300 and the Magnum. The Crossfire is the quickest. After the strip we turned back and got to do a solumn (freaking went through the cones) back to the beginning of the strip and then got in the next car. Repeated this till everyone got a turn. After that who ever was fastest in each car got to do a bonus run. Fortunately we all got to go again a few times. The cars ran faster when the were cool. If you manually shift the 300 and Crossfire I'd recommend shifting from 1st to 2nd at 5100 RPM's with the 300 and stay in 2nd till the end. With the Crossfire I would shift at about 4800 or maybe 4900 RPM's. You'll get the max power at those levels. The Crossfire kept wanting to go into 3rd but it was at the very end of the strip. The autocross was fun and yet the Crossfire was the most fun, even though we got to drive the Neon and Viper. When it came to the race track all bets were off... Hands down it was the best experience ever. We got to go in the Crossfire, 300, Magnum, Viper and were suppose to go in the truck but not enough of them were running right. The instructors are in a pace car (Neon but don't let them fool you, they are fast) and they have three of us following them through the course. Some people have the idea in their head that if they are last in line and lag behind they will be able to go fast on the actual track. But if you get to ride in the pace car you will hear the instructor say that they can only go as fast as their slowest person. So if your lagging your slowing everyone up. LOL... But don't follow too close or else Claude will get pissed off at you.... We were drafting and it was a blast. They like you to be 2 to 3 car lengths behind each other but we like to draft.... It's a race track and fuel is expesive so we were trying to save them money... That comment didn't work with Claude. We got up to about 125 - 130mph but that was it. Again, the fastest was probably the Crossfire just because it has the ESP and assistance that the Viper doesn't have so the Viper gets LOOOOOOSSSEEEEE....
If you are going to do the SRT Track Experience suck it up and drive to a location where it's going to be at a race track. We had some great people that drove down from Orlando 4 hours or so and further. It's a great thing and the Instructors were great... Except Claude... Just kidding.. They were all great....
The next response won't be as long but I had to tell everyone about it...
I had been scheduled to have my brakes and rotors replaced by a local dealer. About one hour after I dropped off the vehicle, the dealer called me and faxed me a letter from Chrysler that stated they are aware of the brake problem and although they had mailed the dealer replacement brakes and rotors they will not stop the problem. In addition, they told the dealership not to install the replacement parts and that their engineering department is working on a solution.
I contacted Chrysler via mail and got a call from a company rep stating the same thing. But if you were able to get it done, I would like to know how so that I can also have it done because the noise is very annoying.
As a former NIASE certified mechanic I believe that it is unrealistic to expect a racing type pad to be quiet. As for the grooving of rotors that may be a result of poor quality control on the pads themselves. These 4 piston calipers use very high clamping forces and if not set up perfectly... well, we see the results. There are significant differences in opinion on brake set up from manufacturer to manufacturer. Note that Porsche and Mercedes drill their high performance rotors and BMW and Chrysler do not.
I would expect Chrysler to devote a lot of hard thought to this and they will fix it eventually. Let's hope they make a fine ceramic pad. Just imagine... nearly no dust!!!!!
By the way, srt8 is a ULEV so it passes all 50 states emissions rules. No worries.
I just can't bear to give the dealer 150.00 for this service!
Mr. Jordan: so sorry for the lateness of this reply. I've been waiting to get the latest information from the SRT engineers, who are aware of customer feedback on this issue, and are working on it. As I understand it, a service bulletin will be released shortly, and new pads will be available.
Again, sorry for the lateness of this reply.

300C SRT-8's: Where have they gone, where are they going?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought some of you might be interested to see where the majority of the SRT-8 allocations have gone so far, to dealers in which States and Provinces. This could be helpful for those still searching for a vehicle, as far as knowing which markets in North America are receiving the most vehicles.
The stats below represent data from over 2000 vehicles. Please keep in mind that this data is based on the majority of, but NOT all of the SRT-8 300C vehicles manufactured to date. Totals for any or all of the States can and will change, some perhaps dramatically, as more vehicles roll off the line.

Who do we write to complain about breaks? I've got 4800 miles on mine now and the squealing and dust is getting worse. The beast will still do 150 though....
Just thought someone may be interested...

Well everyone I went to the SRT Experience yesterday at the Las Vegas Speedway and to say the least I can't remember the last time I had that much fun in one day. The whole Experience was put together so well. There were only about twenty people there and a lot of cars to drive. Starting with breakfast and an instruction class that lasted for a little bit over and hour, right to the drag strip which was great. All the instructors were soo cool and pretty much let you take the cars to the limit on the drag strip. The drag strip wrapped around to a very fun solum course. I got to say after the drag strip I have much respect for the Crossfire SRT 6 that is one fun machine. We dragged the 300SRT, MagnumSRT, and the Crossfire SRT6 three times each car. After that we breaked for a nice lunch and then moved onto the autocross course where there was the SRT4, CrossfireSRT6, and finally the VIPER. This course was fun because you were able to get the feel for driving on a race course without any cement walls or barriers. I got to say that VIPER is one bad azz machine. After this course we went back to the classroom to learn that we were going to be going to the race track and driving by ourselves behing a pace car. The pace car was a SRT4 followed by three groups of cars consisting of the crossfireSRT6, MagnumSRT8 and the VIPER. This course was great because we got the feel for driving on a race track going pretty fast around corners and straighaways. We got turns in each car going about 3-4 laps each. I got to say I liked how the magnumSRT8 handled the best on the track. When we were done with that we got two rides in any car of our choice by the instructors. I chose the VIPER and the 300SRT8 because I own one and wanted to see what this machine was capable of doing. The VIPER ride was probably the craziest ride I have every had in a car before. These guys did not hold back one bit. The instructor who took my in the 300 did things in this car that I didn't think was possible. Man he went full throttle around corners drifting, smoking the tires out. This was hardcore he smoked the tires to the point of oblivian so we had to stop. I wanted more so he took me around a couple more laps in the magnum SRT8 after pulling out the abs fuse and esp fuse from under the hood. These guys weren't messin around. I got to say that ride was soo fun and intriguing at the same time. I was just amazed that are capable of driving like that. If anyone has not had the chance to go the SRT Experience I would highly reccomend it. My brother actually came along and paid $300 to do it and also had the time of his life. I would definetly do this again if I have the opportunity. We took some pictures and video clips that I will post when I have some time.
Much respect for the SRT family and are beastly machines
MIKE
You may not want to drive your CSRT8 like that but it's cool to know that you could! All in all, the best money you could ever spend and I'll DEFINITELY do it again for only $300.00!!!
