No - you're right. I was tap-tap-tapping from memory, and when I looked at the brochure I realized I had them exactly backwards... (bummer! It _would_ look good)

    deeperblue,
No, you have again changed my example and/or misunderstood it. Stop that!
The idea of an immovable barrier is that it does not move nor absorb energy from the crash by deforming, crushing, crumbling, exploding, pulverizing or otherwise moving in any way. It is immovable. Or, if you insist, indestructible or undamage-able from a car crashing into it.
So, the crash energy is NOT shared in any appreciable way between the car and the barrier.
Again, theoretically, a perfect head on collision between two similar cars, each at 50 mph, produces the same rate of deceleration to each car as one car at 50 mph hitting an immovable stationary barrier. And since the rates of deceleration are the same, the expected injuries to occupants would also be the same.
No need to confuse the issue any more by re-inventing my example, ok?

The crash test results are what they are. Unless changes are made to Azera to improve the test results, we should be able to use the current results in comparing cars.
If we don't like car crash test results, maybe we should take the train. I recently read that is statistically the safest way to travel.

Maybe it's me but I think the Zephyr is worth it, but probaly best to wait for the new zephyr this fall. Called the Lincoln MKZ, do a search for it on google. Maybe it just my style, but God Bless.

To compare an Azera with a Legacy, G35 is pointless. The Legacy, which we drove recently, has a tiny back seat and the G35 is also small in rear relative to an Azera. The Suburu and G35 are sport-oriented luxury sedans with more agile suspensions. The Azera, altho not a sloth, isn't intended to be driven hard. The Legacy has standard awd and the G35 offers it. The Azera is a different animal all-together. Hyundai is targeting Avalon and Buick owners for the most part. Late next year, when Hyundai brings out their RWD, then we'll talk about Infiniti, Suburu and even Lexus in this conversation. For now, can we leave the very competent and competitive Azera in the company of the Avalons and Lucernes?

    deeperblue,
Hey, I just discovered an interesting tidbit on another website: http://www.safercar.gov/info.htm#iq8

"How does NHTSA perform the frontal crash rating and how are vehicles rated?

For frontal crash ratings, crash-rating dummies representing an average-sized adult are placed in driver and front passenger seats and secured with the vehicle's seat belts. Vehicles are crashed into a fixed barrier at 35 miles per hour (mph), which is equivalent to a head-on collision between two similar vehicles each moving at 35 mph."

So, if you really enjoy arguing about this, you might want to contact the appropriate government bureaucrat and explain your theory to him.
    Good luck!

ps: Although the government lies and/or is totally wrong about a lot of things, it got this one right.

    ;)

pps: Here's the link to the Azera test numbers http://www.safercar.gov/NCAP/Cars/3756.html

For the first time since we got the Azera(5wks.)we were able to make a highway trip.Reset mode for both speed and fuel consumption.Surprisingly 65mph showed 31.1 miles per gallon,55mph showed 28.6 per gallon.Hope the computer in dash info is right.Have read that others were getting bad gas milage, dont forget to reset computer mode when changing driving styles,I do not believe that the computer adjusts automatically.

My experience to date with "batches" of each type of driving:
a.) Pure local: about 15 mpg
b.) Mix of local and 20 mile trips 18.5 mpg
c.) Trip with no A/C and minimal wind, avg. speed around 65 28 mpg

My wife and I both tend to be "heavy"-footed drivers. Accelerate full out onto parkways, pass quickly, etc.

    FWIW

Ric, Acco.... r u serious? I just accessed the forum on a friend's unit as "him" and it came up properly. Three pics on the bottom of the page. Lemme know... maybe I've done it wrong, but it seems to work for me.
BTW I'm getting 19.6 mpg mostly city driving so far on the first 900 miles clocked. Can't wait for an excuse to get it on a long trip.

We just had our new mud-guards installed that we got from Hundai parts on line (learned about from a previous post here). They only took the Hundai tech about 40 minutes to install, and they look really good. They are not very massive, but complement the rest of the car nicely.

It took a technician 40 minutes to install? Wow. So, this is not a do-it-yourself project? The mounting holes should alredy be there. I would also imagine that the front guards could be installed without removal of the wheels -- just by turning them. The rear ones would probably need the wheels removed, I guess.

But 40 minutes will equate to about $40 in charges. I don't think I want to pay $50 for the guards and then another $40 to have them installed.

I'm now wondering if they're too much of a hassle to get.
  • w9cww9cw Member Posts: 888
They are easy to install, as the mounting holes are already there. The mud flaps come with new screws. Even if you're careful and slow, it should only take 10 to 15 minutes each, hence approx. 40 minutes is about right for a DIY installation. Anyone who's ever used a screwdriver can easily install the mud flaps.

To *deeperblue* and *averidgejoe*: The reason you cannot seem to agree is that you cannot set up the problem correctly. By accident (no pun intended) your chosen example is used in both high school physics and some safe driving courses to show the effects of high speed accidents. To stay on topic here, we will use two '06 Azeras, Ultimate package, sticker about $30k. Read the set up below.

The original concept, a direct head-on at 50 and fixed barrier at 100 mph, is actually at least three problems not just one or two. When properly presented, the answers should be intuitive, no college degree, no math... you just see it.
    The set-up:
a direct frontal crash, each car at 50 mph,
a direct frontal crash, one Azera stationary, one travelling at 100 mph,
and last, a 100 mph Azera frontal crash into a fixed barrier.

Envision each of these events, no math allowed. Take your time. Think about what happens. Now check your posts and see the correct, and incorrect, comments. The answers are obvious. Again, just think what happens....! :)

    Now a test:
Which event is bad? Worse? Worst?
How about the Supercar with the Superstong frame or front? Want to ride in it in one of the above events...or not?

Hope this helps. The purpose is to educate, not argue. All comments welcome, it's an open forum..... Drive safely. ;)

Even with a 4 star crash rating the Azera remains on my list. More testing is necessary. And thanks to all for the real world gas mileage numbers.
  • averigejoeaverigejoe Member Posts: 559
    fin,
Thank you for your proper presentation of your post. And yes, intuitively the answer is obvious, if the question is whether your post is thoughtful and/or helpful.

And the answer is: Your post is complete nonsense. It misstates the issue. It states no observations nor conclusions. It has no educational content whatsoever.

You want the truth? You can't handle the truth! :shades:

If you do want it, re-read my posts. Then take a nap.

ps. The Azera is still on my list too as a good value.

pps. To you and any others who don't know the original issue, here it is: "If you are going 50mph and the on-coming car is going 50mph the net impact is equivalent to hitting an immovable barrier at 100mph."

(That was wrong. It is like hitting an immovable barrier at 50 mph, as my posts state.)
  • finfin Member Posts: 594
True, of course... but it's also fun to expand the thinking sometimes. :)

My doors currently lock when we reach approx. 10mph.

Question, can they be set to lock when the vehicle moves either forward or in reverse at first movement, approx 1 mph? :confuse:

    Thank you

I don't think the door locks can be set at 1 mph. When I had mine programmed, I was with he technician and asked what the options were. I think he said: "none, key insert, 13 mph". There were also options for when the doors UNlock. For example, they can be set to unlock as soon as you put the car into "park". Mine are set to unlock as soon as the key is removed.

I wish there were more options, but from what the technician told me, you have to choose from the menu items on the computer and there aren't really that many options.
  • ratledgeratledge Member Posts: 233
Those are the only options: lock when put in gear (i.e. taken out of "Park") or at about 10mph; unlock when put in Park or when key removed from ignition. Frankly, I don't like the idea of the doorlocks popping when I put the car in Park, but "your mileage may vary"... :P
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
there is another option. Lock when you press the lock button, unlock when you press the unlock button. Works great in my car.

    2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D

  • ratledgeratledge Member Posts: 233
Well - true, but I was intending to state only the "automatic" options... :)
  • ratledgeratledge Member Posts: 233
And how long did it take you to put that in?
  • ratledgeratledge Member Posts: 233
I dunno - just thinking: my wife's Infiniti has a single pair of "up" / "down" buttons on the steering wheel, but if you hold them down for more than one second, it either switches to the next (previous) station or CD depending on which mode you are in on the sound. Just a thought - has anyone tried it? :confuse:

"Automatics" tend to be very similar, and it sounds like the trip computer is basically identical in function, though hers is black on a light background instead of orange on black...
  • mechanic80mechanic80 Member Posts: 122
Took less than 2 hours. There are other pieces too. Overdead console surround, rear air vent trim..... nice kit. I'm just glad I got the photos to post!
BTW my interior is beige although it appears gray in these pics. The tone of the rosewood trim is pretty accurate, though.
  • ratledgeratledge Member Posts: 233
You're right - it does sort of look like gray, but I figured it was beige from the lighting. Looks good... How much was that kit? (which online dealer?)
  • averigejoeaverigejoe Member Posts: 559
I'd like to see the dash kit pics but the link that was posted does not show pictures. Is there a password I need to use? If so, what is it?
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
Hi folks - I had to remove a post that contained some very wide pictures because it was distorting the page.

If you want to post a picture, please be sure it is no wider than the text area that you see here. If it gets wider than that, it causes a number of problems.

What you can do instead is just post a link to it - or even better, drive on over to CarSpace and display it there. There are no restrictions on width there!!

    :)
  • ratledgeratledge Member Posts: 233
Dang - those were nice shots, too! At least I got to see them... "mechanic80" - can you post them elsewhere and link?
  • jim101jim101 Member Posts: 252
    True, oh so true...

The auto lock is a safety feature. Wife and kids often forget to lock doors and sadly in todays world that can be very risky. So the auto lock is a must, the auto unlock going into park is not. Prefer to have doors stay locked when put in park.

Short story, actually happened. Friends, husband and wife made a quick stop at convenience store to get lottery tickets. She was driving, he got out and walked into store, wife stayed in car. A man opened the drivers door, forceably pulled her out dropping her on the ground. Husband saw, ran out tried to stop thief as he backed out. Both husband and wife were ran over, spent weeks in hospital, months and months in rehab, still aren't back to normal. Crook was caught and released, went to court and he walked.
Conclusion, lock doors and keep locked at all times, quick stops, pumping gas and whatever else seems to apply.

Hey FloridaBob. I too am upset about the Azera evidently not coming with this tilt down mirror function, (notice I didn't say "option"!) I have not addressed this issue yet with my "home" dealership. I did visit a dealership near my work to discuss the issue. As expected, the service manager, and technician were unaware of the problem. I asked them to possibly connect to the onboard computer, but they were "too busy" at the time. I am going to inquire at my "home" dealership after I have the car a couple more weeks. I understand the XG350's come with this "function" as standard? Please let me know if you get any results on this issue. I also have to inquire about the "Limp Home" feature.

The owners manual doesn't say it has a speed limiter on the engine, but that doesn't mean much to me so far. Can anybody tell me if their is one? This car was said to go 145mph before the drag coefficient prevents it from going faster. Also, does this engine need some miles on it before using synthetic oil?
  • ricwhitericwhite Member Posts: 292
    Half Tank of city driving

    161 miles / 9.7 gallons = 16.6 mpg

The dash computer estimate was 17.3.

All of these miles except maybe 10 were city driving. I drove very light on the pedal.

I'm looking for an 85 watt replacement for low's and high's.
  • 101649101649 Member Posts: 192
Change the oil and filter after the initial break-in period....Fill with synthetic 5W-20 (it will take more than 6 quarts with the filter)for best efficiency...The Azera uses a drop-in cartridge oil filter that you'll have to source from your Hyundai dealer...it's ~$8. None of the aftermarket manufacturers have it yet...
  • mechanic80mechanic80 Member Posts: 122
The new bulbs are a definate improvement. Whiter light seems to improve distance. If I'm not mistaken, 55 watt is maximum legal wattage, but of greater concern is the extra heat generated by higher wattage bulbs...housings could melt. Possibly a fire hazard.

    Who can field this one?
Above the license plate to the right of the hand/finger grip is round opening with a trap door. Looks like a key or something might fit there.
    What's it for? :confuse:

Re: Oil changes....sure..I have 3 Hyundai's (Santa Fe, Sonata, and new Azera) and have done all the oil changes myself and documented in the maintance log....No questions from the dealer when warranty work was done...You can have it done at the dealer or get the filter and take it to your general auto shop...BTW, I run Mobile 1 in all my Hyundai's...
  • 101649101649 Member Posts: 192
It's for the trunk key...if the battery goes, then you can open the trunk with a key...Also the key will unlock the doors if power goes..The trunk release in the upper rear taillight panel above the license plate is an electrical solenoid and all you have to do is touch it lightly and the trunk opens....hope this helps...
  • 101649101649 Member Posts: 192
So it was worth the $40 for the Sylvania's...You may be correct about the heat..I think there are some 65 watt bulbs street legal in the US....I've run 85 watt High beams in my Sante Fe for 5 years now..They're great...Thanks
  • jim101jim101 Member Posts: 252
Key to open trunk  Too used to buttons and stuff, use keys to open trunk and doors? Must be some kind of new technology.

The trunk release in the upper rear taillight panel above the license plate is an electrical solenoid and all you have to do is touch it lightly and the trunk opens

???inside the trunk, outside the trunk, taillight panel above the license plate???

Me be :confuse: can you give me more data please?
  • 101649101649 Member Posts: 192
Hopefully your license plate is not mounted inside the trunk...The panel that houses your tail lights, b/u lights, turn signals, etc is called a tail light panel..It also has the AZERA icon at the top/middle and Hyundai in the lower left side and Limited on the lower right side...Need any additonal landmarks?? Also there is a "glow in the dark" INSIDE trunk release in case you get locked inside your trunk....Good luck.
  • averigejoeaverigejoe Member Posts: 559
So does that mean anyone could come up to your locked trunk and get the stashed key and open it up?
