That's good enough for me, also a Renault 18 wagon between the BMW and Citroen.

Pic is from "European Vacation", the most underrated and unloved, but still hilarious Vacation film.

No idea what movie it's from but parked on the left is a black Renault 5, a Ciroen 2CV, a red BMW E21 (316/319/320/323 etc) and a Rover SD. The yellow car is an Austin Maxi.

tempo front left. most craptastic rental car I ever had. Scary to drie. and far right front, looks like a corolla hatch. And a stray Lumina in front of it.

man, this is not a good era for the domestic industry.

I think the last time I flew TWA was mid-'90s

Pretty sure that is Lambert Int St. Louis Airport. I think venture (vulture) capitalist Carl Icahn really hurt TWA and its employees, and the American Airlines purchase of TWA dumped them even further. They really just wanted a deal on all those MD-80's in my opinion. Speaking of STL, Ozark was a neat little airline back in its day.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,628
Yep, a couple Tempo in the pic. Car in front of the Corolla (AE86 coupe, were these actually in rental fleets?) is a Cutlass Ciera. Lumina was MY 1990+.

Pic is from a movie, which should be easy - hint: Marathon isn't an actual rental car company, gobble gobble.

Yep, that one is a Celebrity.

Another angle of cars available from Marathon:

    image

I suspect they used an actual rental car lot, just changed the signage, as the rest looks believable in a rental fleet.

That had to be a record number of expletives in that rental scene. I was laughing too hard to keep count.

To be exact it is a 1961 Oldsmobile F85 Cutlass. That is to say that the Cutlass was a sub-model of the F85, a long forgotten name.

I always thought those early 60's upper level GM compact station wagons were kind of neat looking in their own way. Well, at least stood out as kind of uniquely styled for the times.

What's interesting about this car is to compare it to the year earlier model--quite the contrast.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,628
Must be a 49 Lincoln Cosmopolitan, with its unique headlights. Probably a "custom" look of the time.

An unfortunate front end look. Car looks sad and frowny.

Yep,from the 30s to the 50s in one fell swoop!

Imagine being the guy who bought a '48? Year-to year styling changes were so radical back then that your car could easily be "old news" in a year. Suppose you bought a spiffy new Bel Air in 1954?

    ..and Chevy followed w this?

Yes, American cars starting "melting" in the late 40s--gone are the pontoon fenders, the vestigial running boards and the high belt line.

1955 Chevrolet--the first mass-produced modern American car? (slab-sided, short stroke V8, clean 3-box design, good performance)

Well, it still happens. Think of someone who bought a 2010 Sonata and how they felt when they saw the 2011.

I think the slashed-about swoopy 2011 model looks just as dated as the inoffensive 2010 model now. The Optima update was much better IMO.

I suspect a good deal makes buyers of final run "old style" models happier with their purchase. In this day and age, there's no excuse for being in the dark about it.

Yes it’s happened a lot over the years.  Imagine buying an 85 Ford LTD and then seeing the 86 Taurus

Early 90s had a bunch too

92 Dynasty to 93 Intrepid (New Yorker too)
    91 Camry to 92
    91 Crown Vic/ Grand Marquis to 92

Packard Super Clipper, I think postwar. Packard would have been much better off refining that Clipper body for a few more years instead of going with the ungainly model they came out with in '49.

Yup, it's the first postwar Packard, a 1946 Super Clipper.

Well you could argue that the '49 was a refinement of the '46 it uses pretty much the same fenderlines, windshield, roofline, etc. The big difference is the lack of vestigial running boards and the shorter grille:

It's that beltline bulge that many people didn't like at the time. It makes the car look bottom heavy, you know, like you had a fat.....well, nevermind.
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,439
Exactly, Shifty. I always really liked the original Clipper body and really disliked the next generation.

Yup, it's a 1970 Datsun 510, to this day one of the best looking Datsun/Nissan designs ever. That's odd considering it's basically a bunch of rectangles pasted together. ;)

510s have become one of the most overpriced cars on a $/quality basis in recent years. Real tin cans but people love them.

The collector car market isn't rational most of the time. Buyers set prices, not historians or magazines or appraisers or dealers.

Some old cars are high-priced and are complete dogs to drive
Some old cars are very rare and yet worth nothing
Some old cars are as common as pennies and bring high prices
Some old cars have doubled in value in a few years
Some old cars have dropped 50% in value in a few years.

    You figure it out---I can't! B)
