    1986 with that front clip.

Those wagons weren't bad looking cars.

In some sick demented way I can see that wagon in white, with limo tint all around a decent set of wheels (maybe something from a Z24 or Beretta) and a 3800 Supercharged transplant. Would be quite a sleeper (in a straight line anyway).

My girlfriend had a Celebrity sedan of that vintage, and her company car was a Century. Wouldn’t give you 2 cents for either one of them.

Wagons are cool, but those were crappy cars

Thinking of that, I remember a close friend's mom had a new 87 Celebrity wagon, her first new car. They had a lot of issues with it, and by 1990, she was fed up. Ditched it for a then-new style Accord, and never looked back, her last domestic brand car.

Of that vintage, I would rather have a Malibu with a crate 350 and some suspension and brake upgrades.

Made me think about "last domestic brand cars"... my Dad was a Chevy guy... until... he and my grandfather got identical 1965 Chevy Impalas, and both of them had the transmissions crap out within 6 months. That got us into a '66 Chrysler Newport, which was my first car when Dad handed it off to me. Dad then gave Chevy another try... with a '73 Vega...

He became a Honda guy :)

I don't think my parents were loyal to any one brand ...

    Dad had his Chevy pickup for 45+ years. Mom went through a variety of makes;

    3 Toyotas
    1 VW
    1 Mercedes
    1 Hyundai

My last, and only purchased new, domestic was our 1996 Voyager. Had a couple used along the way (a ford and a mercury) but I think that was it.

We've bought and leased a number of domestics. Wife was a Ford girl when I met her, so we had 4 of those, then we went through a Saturn phase, with 4 of those.

Domestics certainly had issues the last couple of decades of the previous century when they tried to respond to Asian and European manufacturers. They have come a very long way since then. I had only 2 bad experiences with a domestic, our family's '74 Maverick LDO that I was the primary driver of in university, which was a horrible car of very poor quality, and my '09 Lacrosse which had a bad transmission that inept dealers were unable to fix properly, though the rest of the car was fine. My '77 LeMans, '79 Impala, '78 Delta 88, '79 Electra Park Avenue, and both Cadillacs were all very good (I'm leaving the Cutlass out given its age although it has been remarkably trouble-free). My '85 MR2 was a troublesome car with a number of surprising problems including a blown head gasket. My GTI had a couple of issues but nothing major, though I only kept it 4 years. My '11 Regal was a "domestic" car built in Russelheim, Germany that had issues with a creaky console and a few misfire codes, the latter of which were addressed though the console was deemed "they're all like that" which I blame on the dealer service department.

Up here I was continually amazed at the loyalty to Asian makes in the '70s and '80s because they were all terrible rust buckets in this environment. To their credit they eventually addressed that.

Here's a mystery car for me. Never saw one of these ever before until today:

PS for @PF_Flyer : Tried posting this using Firefox on my office PC and it was the same old non-responsive pulldown problem. Switch to Chrome and it worked. I'm stumped as to what is happening. Cookies cleared, fresh login, etc. It did this yesterday for a while but later stopped and worked for a while.

I fired up Firefox. It was updated earlier this week. Same result as @ab348.
All pull downs are unresponsive. Chrome is working great!

You're about right on the Buick, not sure of the year, couldn't find any that matched the shape of rear fender.

The "woody" isn't a Crosley, it's much bigger. Think "import".

I was also surprised by the fanatic loyalty to Japanese imports from the 70's. In 1981 my friend was driving a 1976 Datsun B210 Honeybee which her dad bought new and gave to her when she graduated high school.

The first time out together she warned, "Do not make fun of my car!"

At 5 y/o it was very rusty and losing a lot of the factory paint - on its way to rusting out even more. The aluminum head of the tiny engine had cracked and been replaced. At just over 100K miles she called it the best car ever made.

It was cheap to buy and got very good mpg and was all finished by 1982.

Wasn't that also a problem on the new Vega?
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,354
    edited July 2019
Vega's came pre-rusted from the factory I think. 5 years to have no cowl left sounds about right. And they had problems with oil usage thanks to unlined aluminum cylinders.

Any 1976 car that made it 100K miles probably was a great car.

Although, I think I could have outrun a B210 on my Schwinn.

My cousin with a pizza shop in 1974 bought 2 new Chevy Vegas for pizza delivery vehicles. Not a good business model for a small mom and pop store. And he never explained why he picked Vega vehicles. He didn't like to talk about that experience at all.

His brother and wife decided to avoid the Vega and buy a new Pinto for better commuting MPG. Ordered from the dealer in white with 2.3 engine and 4 speed, I think. The car looked nice until you saw the driver's side. I think they were only 30 days from taking delivery and it had a small nasty looking rust spot on the driver door and a rusty streak spreading across the door from that spot.

I remember my cousin telling me that if they had waited 1 more year to order their Pinto, they could have ordered a 2.8 V6.

Yep, the woody Wagon was a Morris Minor Traveler ca. 1950s.
    There was also a Mini-Minor Traveler>

The term "Traveler" refers to bands of gypsy-like bands who roam the British isles. I believe they aren't Romany Gypsies but IIRC are believed to be of Irish descent.

Oldie appears to be a 32 Ford Tudor, likely a V8, a desirable car even then.

In the background parked on the street, a 2 door Falcon and a Peugeot 404 in front of it.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Some interesting stuff, but I'll take the 58 Chevy wagon in the back by the building and perhaps a 57 Pontiac convertible behind it (image is kind of blurred on my monitor).
  • omarmanomarman Member Posts: 2,702
Behind the convertible on the street a '62 Falcon and inside the parking lot a '62 Galaxie.

I'll grab the '50/'51 Stude 4-door with the suicide rear doors. There's a teal colored car almost nose-to-nose with it that has a similar greenhouse but the back looks different.

In the mid 70's my brothers each bought used 2nd gen Galaxie for "work" cars. Oldest brother had a '62 with a 390 and my second oldest brother had a '63 with a 289. Between the two cars I remember the small block '63 Galaxie seemed like a better daily driver - if only for the smaller gas leak.

But still I liked the 390 better so I bought a '68 Torino GT 390 in my senior year.

I think the newest car might be the '63 Chevy two-dr parked next to the white(?) Studebaker

Yup, the Mog is probably a Plus Four, next to it is a "Bugeye" Austin-Healey Sprite which like the Morgan has a tonneau cover on.

Toward the top of the pic is another British roadster, either a second gen Sprite or an MG Midget. Next to the old Volvo is the nose of a white Valiant or Lancer.

Unbelievable, it works in Firefox on this PC! Now to check if it works on the office PC.

Regarding that photo, I can already see the first Edmunds review on the C8 - "too many confusing buttons on the center console divider make using the (whatever) cumbersome". At least if the recent hatchet job they did on the video comparo between the Honda Passport vs Chevy Blazer is any indication. That was just beyond ridiculous.

Might insult some people, but I think the new Vette is being aimed at a new/younger demographic who might be more flexible in terms of ingress/egress and tech both (and who don't want the jorts/white sneakers image).
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,107
$60,000 base, pretty amazing. Of course no base models will be built for at least a year.

Ingress is no problem. I've tested out a few on the floor at my local Chevy store. Gravity, you know! LOL

    It's the egress that's rough.
