Yep the blue car is a Dolomite. Waiting for magnette to pick off the rest, I suppose (not all are difficult IMO).

I hope the Saab is steaming rather than smoking.

If it was a two-stroker I'd say it was likely smoking but that looks like a late production 4cylinder/4stroker. The DKW-derived 3-banger was retired because of emission regs
    after 1967.

I'd forgotten that there was a Sonnett III (1972-73), it also used the 21500cc Ford V4

I always think of the III. well, years ago the last time I thought of a Sonnett.

Mk II Scirocco, not in the best of health...

I preferred (and owned a '79) the Mk I. Here's a good article on it:

I always liked the Scirocco. I remember looking at a used one (probably in the late 80s). Fun car. Needed seatbelts, since the owner apparently had a dog and it had chewed through the driver's belt.

Looking back at some photos taken while stationed in Germany in '67/'68, here is a passing car which I would like to have identified. The photo was taken on the speedlimitless German Autobahn through the plastic window of an Army jeep.We could never get more than 70mph out of those jeeps and were passed by everything else on the Autobahn.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,676
Count me among those who much preferred Mk. I with it's Giugiaro styling. I nearly bought one and in retrospect I should have instead of the '79 Accord I did buy.

The Mk II had a long production run from 1981-94

Those weird headlights belong to a Gen. II Ford Taunus 17M 1960-64.

One more. Probably a Mercedes Benz right? All the taxis in town were Mercedes. So smooth and powerful. We were on the Autobahn in one of those taxis and couldn't wait to get back to the barracks to convert KPH to MPH to see how fast we were going. Turned out to be 108mph!

Yep Ford is a Taunus "Badewanne", MB is a Ponton of indeterminate type, but as it is in the left lane in a culture that believes in lane discipline, maybe a 6 cyl model, probably not a diesel as those topped out around 70 mph, IIRC.

These old cars can move, once you get to speed. My fintail will cruise at 100 mph all day (or would have when new), but it might take some time to get there. I can say from experience that it gets to 80 or so quickly enough, but after that takes patience, and the car is geared so the little I6 is really humming above 70 or so.

Scirocco pic has an early 80s Volvo GL wagon in the background, along with a late run Tempo/Topaz coupe, I suspect its a Topaz.

Yup, it's a 1952 Allard K2, so a late K2, originally with an Ardun modified Ford Flathead, now with a Cadillac 390 V8.

Jowett Javelin. It may look kind of stodgy, but in austere postwar Blighty, it was a quantum leap from most domestic cars. Innovative car, with independent suspension IIRC.

It doesn't look like anyone knows the blue fiberglass beauty from Latin America. It's a Puma GT, made in Brazil from Volkswagen components but assembled by Puma Cars. I saw several when visiting Rio in 1976 and was taken by its sleek styling. The Puma GT enjoyed a long production run in Brazil from 1964 until the company moved to South Africa in 2006.

The Puma GT was originally a front engine FWD car using a DKW drivetrain. Most of the few that made it to the USA wre sold as VW based kit cars. A complicated history followed...

    A 427 Cobra

I assume it’s a kit of some kind, because most are. Especially if you see it on the toad. My BIL has a superformance version. With a 427 Rousch motor. Definitely overkill. But fun!

Yes, it's true that if you see a "Shelby" Cobra being driven on the road it is likely to be a replica, there are some that are pretty convincing but talk about complicated histories...
the history of ersatz Cobras is very complex. The pictured car is described as a "CSX 4000 Continuation car" built by DenBeste Motorsports of Windsor CA.

Huh...I was under the impression that Continuation series Cobras were actually made by Shelby American in Las Vegas. The motor is 468 CID V8, presumably and enlarged Ford 427/428/429.

It fetched $106,000 on BAT which is reasonable considering it is likely just a reasonably good glass bodied replica rather than an authentic "Continuation".

    Complicated indeed.

A couple of years ago I spotted what appeared to be a competition model small-bore Snake barrelling down an Interstate on a cool fall day so I sped up to catch a good look. If it was a fake it was a really good one. There was no weather protection, just a small flat screen in front of the driver who wore a heavy jacket and a ski hat. The car had the wider competition rear fenders and less than great paint.

I ran across a (probably 100% fake) Cobra meet up at a local restaurant. One had the hood up, with a 'blow-through' supercharger setup. He said he had a tough time getting the carb to work right. I'm not surprised, it being in a box, probably heated up like an easy bake oven in there. Hello vapor lock!
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,499
The blue one pictured supposedly has an aluminum body. Only 1000 miles on it. Seller said it couldn’t pass California emissions testing.

I think I still have a photo of one from a local meet up. He actually had a little sign that said, "Yes, it's real".

Not an expert, but I didn't see anything on it that would make me think otherwise.

'67 Ford XL convertible. I like the "Thunderbird bucket seats" which look like the bucket seats on my '68 Torino GT but I'll have to check the brochure.

There is a '67 Galaxie 500 convertible in that brochure but the XL was a separate model that year.

What are the differences between plain Galaxie and XL that year? Interior trim? Maybe an extra chrome piece on the upper body line? I see the brochure pic lacks an engine badge - 6 cyl XL?

My dad had a yellow 67 Galaxie convertible, many years before I was born.

Here's a link to the engine/option page of that brochure.

Looks like the base model '67 Ford XL is the 289 Challenger with automatic. The chart indicates that you could order a '67 XL with a 410 hp 427 or the 427/dual 4bbl setup with 425hp. Both with mandatory 4-speed.

automobile catalog also indicates that option available but I don't know if I'd trust that source by itself. At least it seems to confirm the brochure. But were any '67 Ford XL cars ordered like that? Hmm.

How the heck did that survive in NY? Has to be a transplant and/or lived in a hermetically sealed bubble. I was going to also say a restoration, but you aren't finding those interior parts anywhere.

I remember when I was in 6th grade, a classmate's mom had one of those. It was a rare weird car even then when it was only ~10 years old.

I have a vintage toy one of those, I think they are kind of cool in a bizarre way:
