a Ferrari, from back when they had clean, classic, gorgeous styling!
Actually there's a story about the styling. When the Jaguar E-Type was first shown in 1960, Enzo Ferrari declared it the "most beautiful car" and challenged Battista Pinifarina to do better. The photograph shows what resulted when Pinifarina restyled the 250GT/SWB coupe.
IMHO it's very close between the two but I'd give the Jag a slight edge.
Anyone remember the model name of that particular Ferrari?
250GT Berlinetta Lusso. McQueen had one in an unusual color like that, IIRC.
Exactly, I remember the first one I ever saw. I was a passenger in a car heading back to college (ca.1963/4) on the Quickway thru the Catskills (NY-17) and a silver Lusso passed us. It wore Italian tourist plates and the driver was a short fellow wearing a Tyrolean hat.
Yes its a Tatra 613 and the picture came from 1974 Still rear engined with V8 3495 cc engine hanging out over the rear like the old 603 and the other streamlined models back to the thirties.
I saw one of these 613s in London sometimes and it was registered here, before we had special Diplomatic plates, although may have been belonging to the then Czechoslovakian Embassy I suppose. It was black...
Judging from the 5 letters on the grille badge that I cannot quite make out, I'd guess that is a Canadian pic of an Envoy Estate. Not an Envoy Epic, as that name was reserved for the Vauxhall Viva clone. Not sure if this model was just called Envoy of it it had a series designation like the virtually identical Vauxhall Victor.
Yes, it is the Envoy estate - but the model designation for the estate was apparently Sherwood (cue Robin Hood theme tune). There is a little chrome badge on the trim flash on the rear doors which says Sherwood. Here they never had any name for the estate at all.
Renault 4CV also known as 750. Production started in late 40's. The initial grille was different from the subject car as that had several bars, whereas this three bar one was from about 1955 to end of production in about 1959 I think Apart from in France the 4CV was assembled in UK during the fifties and also in Japan from about 1952, where it becomes the basis for the Hino car, later developed into the Hino Contessa
Yes, it's an Isetta, but sold here as a BMW Isetta. You can see its a British market version partly because its RHD but also because its a three wheeler - one single rear wheel. The three wheeler was subject to different rules and was treated as a Motorcycle with sidecar legally so motorcyclists could drive one on a bike licence without having taken a car driving test. Also they paid less tax on a three wheeler. Generally Isettas abroad had two rear wheels close together for stability.
The number plate is odd too.
Essex was one of the first counties to run out of all the available codes in 1961 and the proposed new plates (which would have a year indicator letter on them) weren't yet released, so they gave Essex the previously unissued code OO in1961 and got through from OO 1- OO9999 in only a couple of months. All the numbers below 999 were issued to motor bikes and those above 999 went to any vehicles and they subsequently spent the rest of 1961 going from AOO 1 to YOO 999 etc
This meant that a motor bike got OO7 as a regular number in 1961 - it was issued normally before the release of Dr No which made James Bond so popular although it must worth a fortune now.
@andys120 That looks like an ATS - the mini Ferrari from the early 60's
Yup, that's an ATS 2500GT (c.a. 1964) an early pioneer in mid-engine motoring. (ATS=Automobili Turismo e Sport).
ATS was founded by dissidents in the wake of the "Palace Revolt" at Ferrari when some prominenti quit Ferrari to protest their treatment by Enzo Ferrari and his wife Laura. Carlo Chiti, Giochino Bizzarrini and American driver Phil Hill were among those who left to work at ATS.

Essex also issued 1 F a year or so earlier too.
