:) The colours available in post war Europe were more limited than over the pond - just look at all the black or dull British colours

But the 2CV was nearly always grey / blue or a sort of mud colour all of which are depicted

At this period the 2CV was still being assembled in England too and they were all grey I think - I remember seeing them around as old cars when I was a kid and Dinky were probably replicating that.

The tiny people on scooters look quite realistic too

Can't miss the tall Jeep wagon. These were called "All Steel Wagons" but painted to look like Woodies.

Still seems odd that some people consider this the golden era of car design!

The wide eyed Mercury behind the 61Chevy looks odd, actually ugly.

Yes indeed. The ‘60 Mercury joins the ‘61 Plymouth, the ‘58-‘60 Lincoln, and others that are still among my repressed memories as automotive Quasimodos.

It's actually a '61 Meteor. My father bought one new. I remember being at the dealership with him when he was making the purchase and him and the salesman having the hood open and looking at the front end, trying to see if the star ornament between the headlights could be removed and the headlight pods relocated. Don't know why he didn't just buy a Ford.

Of course, Meteor, my bad. The artists renderings look better than the actual car. The rear taillight treatment looks pretty nice and follows the curves of the bumper. I assume the backup lights are on the inner portion of the trim next to the gas filler door.

The rear lights on that Meteor are quite cool, while the front makes me think "Oldsmobile".

I don't know where to begin w so many cars. I'll say this, old designs like the Volvo PV544
and the VW Beetle really stand out in a crowd of more modern cars (both are represented).

Well, the styling indicates that’s a ‘63 model, and the V8 was only offered late in the model year as a 1963 1/2 model with the 260.

At first I didn't see the Sydney caption but I did notice that the cars are all RHD, even the Detroit iron.
Closest to camera is an early 1950s Nash Statesman Super. Next to it is s omething that looks British but I don't recognize. Perhaps a late 40s Holden?

The car in Sydney beyond the Nash is a Humber - models are similar in that range but I think it is a Humber Super Snipe Mk II which was introduced in 1950...

  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Nice old motors - usually seen either following a hearse or with confetti but they were also the sort of car that probably had flag on it outside Government offices etc

There were two longer versions (Pullman and Imperial) too
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
I think Australia got RHD American cars assembled from Canadian CKD kits as they would have got "Empire" preference and of course they would also have been the ones sold in African / Asian territories as well

It's a Peugeot 204 convertible, a 2-seater. Very French 1960s vibe, needs to be down on the Riviera.

The picture was captioned as a "Dodge Omni GLH". A trip to wikipedia.com did not unconfuse me as to whether or not all Omni GLHs were Shelbys. It did say that Shelby coined the GLH (Goes Like Hell) name and notes that just over 10,000 Omni GLHs were sold in 1985-86.

The Shelby is a GLHS, I think.

This looks like the in-between model, before they put the Shelby name on it. (ergo, Omni GLH)

As to the Dodge Omni--- no, not all Omni's were GLH. Most were generic, plain Omni? Horizons. Shelby did tune some, I believe around 1986 or so. They were turbocharged little rockets that put out 146 hp. A couple of years later, they made a GLHS (much rarer) that put out 175 hp! Really fast, but had wicked torque steer, so make sure your wheels are pointed straight! Shelby also built the Charger versions of GLH and GLHS as well. Getting hard to find now, and the prices are going up. Most were black, I think the GLHS were all black, but not 100% sure of that.

I'm late to the party here, but I think that Mopar off to the left is a '57 Saratoga. They weren't all that common when new, as I think most buyers went for the Windsor if they were on a budget, or the New Yorker if they wanted to splurge. Also, being a 4-door hardtop it would've been even more rare. I'd imagine there weren't too many of those in Canada.

The GLHS were certainly all black and were modified by Shelby directly.

The one above is an 84 and then in 85 they began to add the side skirts and the turbo engine (Shelby engineered) was more common. The very first GLH only had the HO version of the 2.2.

The Shelby Charger could be had in Blue, Red/Maroon and black all with silver accents.
