i think Iread that 93% of the big Healeys were exported, mostly to the US, i would guess.

That's correct. I'm reading an article about Donald Healey in an old Automobile Quarterly, and he said "I decided that there was only one market for sports cars in the world. Everybody else hadn't any money left and I decided I had to earn dollars."

Coincidentally, one of the earliest cars he drove was his father's Regal, around a 1918, imported from the US. My dad had restored a 1911 Regal, which we drove on many occasions while I was growing up.

Yes. Mid-'60s apparently, with a '53/'54 Chevy convertible about to sideswipe a Gen-1 VW bus.

The same view today is nowhere near as charming, unfortunately.

The Chevy wagon is a little later than that. I think '69 or '70 full-size. Not the top trim level, maybe a Townsman.

I think I see a Camaro with stripes way up there too, so pic is no older than 1967.

Yup, the small lettering on the front fender reads "Fuel Injection", presumably it's a 327 Fuelie.

It's been many a year since I've been in Rutland. During my glorious ski house (Okemo/Killington region) years of oh, so many, years ago, during particularly ski-unfriendly weather, we would occasionally go to Rutland to bowl or catch a flick. Rare, though, as we skied almost no matter what Ma Nature would throw at us! Well, beyond no snow on the mountain...

1948-ish Packard, maybe a 'Deluxe Eight Touring Sedan', on the left.

Oldie appears to be a 30-31 Model A coupe in front of the delivery van.

Beyond the parked Studebaker is a Mopar 1946-8 sedan but they all look similar

The black car just alongside the delivery van - is it a circa 1940 Oldsmobile?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,505
    Yep, maybe a 39 Olds.

Prewar coupe in front of it is a Mopar, likely a 38 Dodge or Plymouth.

That Oldsmobile was a guess because there was a similar car found in a barn / garage /field in Britain some years back but which had been registered in about 1939/40

I can't find a reference to it now but it was in one of the classic car magazines here at the time and subsequently went to auction here.

As you can imagine virtually no US cars were imported here in that period - not until the US entered the war really - so it was very unusual

I think it turned out that the first registered owner was a doctor here - only essential users were allowed to buy cars in that period - it might have been just stock from some dealer as the war broke out here but would have otherwise been requisitioned for the forces generally.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,505
I know exported US cars in that era were considered to be a very premium product, as American cars then were generally more modern and robust than almost all others.

An Olds must have been a rarity, as I think I recall the similar Buick would have had tax advantages, as I believe export model Buicks were Canadian built/McLaughlin cars. Not sure about Olds.

yup, it's a 1962 Pontiac Bonnevilee posing in front of a staged background. Except for the chrome
side flash and the name script the isn't anything from that angle to tell it from a first year Grand Prix.

Second year and subsequent GPs got their own distinct rooflines.

Montreal, 1965, Dorchester Square/Peel St. I sort of remember this from visiting there as a kid in this era. A big, bustling city, quite intimidating to us, but fascinating too.

That's the one I was hoping someone would spot. It IS Montreal, after all, and back then it was probably Renault's biggest market in North America. I think that is a Renault 8.

And it explains why the parking area of a fast food place has a Mercedes Adenauer in it. If real, it would probably be worth more than the business.

Looking at King Charleys diner it strikes me how since you all became a republic you have been fond of the monarchy in these matters

Even here our first King Charles was ditched - short sharp chop at the end of the English Civil War in 1649 though the second one did last a couple of decades.

FYI- the gorgeous interior belongs to a ca. 1965 Maserati Sebring II, one of several derivatives of the 3500GT that kept Maserati in the forefront of the Gran Turismo game during the 1960s

The steering wheel is a Nardi identical to the aftermarket unit that came with the TR-4A i bought second hand in '67; I miss nice wooden sterring wheels!

Ah, the golden age of the automobile with a Liberace concert, life was good.

I see 2x BMW E30, one at center right, one at far left lower corner. A few rental cars in that lot too no doubt.

It's a 1985 Nissan Maxima, first MY for the Nissan-badged 4dr version as opposed to the previous Datsun 810-badged sold vrsions in the USDM.

Apparently they are ending production of the Maxima at least for the USA.
