Yes, Paddy Hopkirk was a great rally driver and the Mini Cooper S was the model he won the 1964 Monte Carlo event.

I saw him driving once at a classic event at Silverstone - in a Mini Cooper- doing a few demonstration laps of the Grand Prix circuit and he also took it off road around some of the grass in-field area

I don't think he looked out of the windscreen at all - he was mostly sideways - but he was always in such control that he made it look easy

He was also a larger than life character and was universally popular in his native Northern Ireland even during the dark times in that province.

    RIP indeed

Yeah, mid-engined V8, first Maserati with 4 wheel independent suspension. They were a bit behind the times. The Merak has the rear arches connecting the roof to the rear fenders, but no windows.

60 Plymouth making the left turn behind the old Chrysler

EDIT - no it's making a right turn on the wrong side of the road

I automatically get the sides wrong when driving on the other side of the road as when I approach a Left turn here I think of that as easy, and the Right turn as hard due to the oncoming traffic though so far I have always avoided turning into oncoming traffic so it must be sort of an automatic thing

Its easier in the US as so many of your roads are in separate lanes whereas in the backwoods of Italy or Spain the locals take a more lax attitude to lanes themselves so its less dodgy.

It’s a two door Maybach. No clue as to the model name.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,131
Made by "My Coupe", a company that takes Model 57 S Maybachs and converts them into coupes. Wonder if they have any agreement with MB?

That's an Austin-Healey 3000 mk.2 (BN6) with it's windshield in the folded position. Note the whitewall tiires (not uncommon on 50s sports cars) and the custom bumperettes in rear. There are twin radio antenae on rear fenders, very definitely another custom touch.

I think the 3000 came out a few years later. I think this might be a 100/6.

The wide whites really set it off, nice period touch.

You're probably right. Wikipedia articles show the following:

    100/6

    BN4: 2+2, 1956–59
    BN6 2-seat. 1958–59

    3000 Mk I

    BN7 2-seat. 1959–61
    BT7 2+2, 1959–61

    3000 Mk II

    BN7 2-seat, 1961–62
    BT7 2+2, 1961–62
    BJ7 2+2, 1962–63

Why did you begin by saying it was a Thunderbird…..although it obviously is? FINS, hooded dash, removable top.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
We never saw any Austin Healeys when I was growing up apart from the Sprite

In the UK they were only really in the cities and rich areas so never ventured into Wales (apart from when rallying I suppose).

They were mostly exported and the 100/4 or 100/6 would have been quite rare, while the subsequent 3000 was probably not much more widespread.

My uncle, USMC multiple tours in 'Nam guy who is a mixture of a badass and the most gentle pacifist personality one can imagine, had an A-H 3000 back in the day. He then got into VWs and Jeeps, although I remember his family had a Dodge Aspen wagon when I was a little kid. He's 75 years old now, has a Chevy HHR and a Dodge Dakota to pull his boat (doesn't seem to care for big trucks).

i think Iread that 93% of the big Healeys were exported, mostly to the US, i would guess. I nearly bought a '64 Mk.III but decided that the exhaust was too low to survive NYC's crappy streets.

    Here's a rare UKDM example>
