That 1960 Imperial sure has a large badge on the hood.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,561
Man that Imperial really shows how quickly cars and styles aged then. 7 years old and looks like a neglected relic.

Looks like a 66 Galaxie XL 2 behind the Imperial.

In photo of police units the taillights on the Chevy can't be seen which is the best way to tell MY of a tri-Chevy . I'll call it a 55 probably a 210. The Ford is a '58 a departure from the round taillights typical of Fords of the 50s/60s.

They are definitely ‘57s. Look at the front end of the one facing the camera. The ‘55 had a fender shape that drooped slightly where it met the headlight, and a sharp narrow top of the taillight. I also doubt the PD would be using cruisers that are as old as that circa 1959 or so.

Chev. 1957. On the one facing away from the camera, we can see the cheese slicer blade sticking up on the front edge of the hood--there were two. And the chrome on the rear edge of the tailfin is wrapped over onto the top of the fin forward about 10 inches.
On the one facing toward the camera, in front of the Cadillac, we can see the round taillights above the bumper at the bottom of the tailfin.

I'm not sure that one is a 225 IIRC those had a small badge on the side. The one I got to drive a couple of times back in the day was a loaded Electra 225 with the 401 Wildcat V8 It was the same colors in and out. It was gorgeous and a blast to drive.

It’s funny - up here whenever we get a big storm with lots of wind and power outages occur as a result, local social media is always full of “why don’t they bury the power lines underground?” as if most places do and that it’s just poor us that cannot enjoy their benefits. The local answer is equally laughable, usually along the lines of “we’re built on solid rock so it would be crazy expensive “, conveniently ignoring that water and sewer lines are indeed well underground and the solid rock, where it even exists, is usually quite a ways under the surface. Nobody seems to realize that it is common practice to put them overhead in most places.

Yeah, it’s the rare exception to bury them. I’m guessing the ones in the pic include both local low voltage and area higher voltage lines, resulting in the the two-tier poles.

'59 or so 'Square Bird'. Looks promised a sporty car, the reality, not so much.

I drove one back in 1963 or 64 that belonged to a college buddy. Heavy as heck. 352cu in engine.

I have and wasn’t overly impressed. My 70 DeVille convertible drove better.

The pictured car is a '60. I've never driven one but rode in a '59 belonging to Edward R. Murrow who gave his to my Dad while he was in London for a week.

my parents really had a lot fewer cars than it seems many of y'alls had. I barely remember the Chevy wagon they had until I was about 6, which was replaced by the Volvo that they kept until I was a senior in HS!

My father did have a few different work trucks and fire chief's cars that I do remember.

Almost looks like a mini-pickup from that angle.

Had a strange fascination with the XLR, went to look at a used one at my local Caddy dealer. Typical (imho) underwhelming GM interior and the fact that the body had delaminated from the frame behind the driver side front wheel turned me off. I pointed this out to the dealer who assured me they would glue it back together.
Originally, a la several "halo" cars, Caddy wildly overpriced this car (previously Allante, ELR! followed the XLR in that respect).
Also, I forget which GM exec at the time (Bob Lutz?) stated that they did not use cheap materials when building the XLR, they just made them look that way! Yeah, just what I want to spend my $75k+ on...
Never understood why Caddy didn't fully embrace the Lexus model, build a competitive, quality vehicle and price it more fairly than the competition. Hopefully gain market share, slowly raise prices.

That "Art and Science" design theme worked well on some models, not so much on the XLR in my opinion.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,561
I recall a period episode of Top Gear where Clarkson had one and of course mocked the interior plastics. Corvette in a Tuxedo, cool for what it was, but pricing was tough.

IMO another attempt to compete with the SL - the standard XLR was cheaper than a SL but slower and not as nice inside. The V was faster than a normal SL but slower than the AMG model it undercut pricewise.
