You're right of course. That syling while less moderrn is a bunch more elegant than the Ponton IMO.

It was the last prewar style sedan

In the cases of the ponton and the fintail, their styling was obsolete about 12 months after introduction.

That used to be the charm of German styling, it was always a wave or two behind the
avante garde. Audi is the only one ever to be really successful at putting up to date styling on German iron. ;)

While Mazda was copying the original Elan so successfully with the Miata, Lotus came out with this awkward looking FWD thing and slapped the Elan name on it.

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Correct Jason. The Isuzu powered Elan is sometimes known as the M-00. I've heard that it wasn't a very good Lotus, being fwd and all but it was a pretty decent car if you set aside expectations of Lotus-like cornering.

As I remarked earlier the Miata may have looked Elan-like but didn't really have the
"elan" of the ultralight, backbone chassis Lotus forebear. It was more of an up-to-date MG than a noveau Lotus.

    Andy -- nice guess.
I'm kind of surprised no one got this one.
The car is a Swallow Doretti which, I believe, has some relationship to Triumph. Supposedly there were about 270 of these built in the mid 50's and the house owner owns 8 of them. I have never seen one other than these!
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
there were 250 Swallow Dorettis built and you're surprised no one got it  Anyway here's another picture I found of one.

Got any more like that up your sleeve Mrwhipple?

    I'll give you some hints...

    It has an aluminum chassis.

    It is hand-built.

It is raced by the factory in the American Le Mans Series.

It's a '57 Simca Vedette and, yeah the styling is obviously from the French Ford era which ended in '54. Many later Simcas were Fiat-based.

interesting as I don't remember any stock Cadillacs having a hidden front quite like that......then again, I'm not a big Caddy fan either.

Late 60's vintage, I believe. IIRC, they shared a platform with the Olds Toronado; both were FWD.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
That's right, the '67 Eldo was the first fwd Caddy and one of the handsomest Cadillacs of the era, a lot better looking than the Toronado in my book.

Not exactly, Fintail. Every Alfa coupe since the 50s has carried the "Sprint" label but these are Alfa-Romeo _________Sprints, (fill in the blank). ;)

Well it beats me why some of you aren't seeing the picture but here's another picture
    of the Alfasud Sprintimage

Which was the coupe version of the fwd Alfasud, here's the sedan version=>

None of the Alfasuds were imported to the US.

the image will only appear if I open the url for the image in another window. They probably don't handle hot-linking images, my guess.

I can clearly tell it's not a Pontiac Grand Prix or a a Chevy Sprint ;)

Still looks like an Alfa offspring of some sort from the front.

Post #806 appears fine, can see the little black 'vertible.

Fin beat me out. I knew it was a JH. I remember reading the road tests when they came out. For some reason, I always liked them, although I can't honestly say I ever saw one in person.

This would have been early '90s. I distinctly remember two things: the Lotus twin cam engine, and more rust than I have EVER seen on a supposedly "drivable" car. If you accidentally kicked the kick panel from inside the car your foot would have gone all the way through the front fender.

    -Jason

edit: now that I think of it I've seen some running Toyota pickups that were rolling piles of rust held together with duct tape. The JH was pretty bad, though. Even young and stupid as I was I knew that much rust was bad news.

    blue Audi RS2 Avant wagon.

Prezactly, the RS2 Avant was designed and built by Porsche so it preceded the Cayenne as Porsche's first wagon, even if it was marketed by Audi, It featured twin-turbos and 400 hp making it one of the fastest cars of the early 90s.

That was one of the reasons I remembered it was an RS2. I did not know the true designer of it though (thank's for that useful trivia tidbit ;) )
