Yep, oldish Travelall with a mid-1960s GMC light truck behind it. Somebody sprung for the chrome package. :shades:

'55 Caribbean, Fintail. They're asking $44k for that one.

I could have guessed that from the grille.

That grille inspired the new Subaru B9 Tribeca's nose.

    Inspired?

Please don't lay that ugly Tribeca thing at Alfa's feet.. ;)

    I love that little Alfa...

Andreas Zapatinas came from Alfa (and earlier from BMW, back when they actually made handsome cars).

He couldn't plaigarize the grille completely, so he turned it upside down.

Ironically, Subaru's is "A" shaped and Alfa's is "V" shaped.

Quick, someone with good photochop skills, turn that Alfa's grille upside down. It's a dead ringer. You even have the wings on the sides.

The lights are different, but the grille even has the horizontal chrome strips!

Or I'll do another one with the formula Cayenne body + Murano d-pillar + 1/Alfa Romeo Grille = Tribeca. ;-)

It doesn't work any better than turning the Statue of Liberty upside down would!

    Should I do a side-by-side with the Jag S-Type?

I like to torture you guys... :P

To be honest, it was funny debating this with the VW/Porsche guys, they said that the Germans would never produce anything that looked like this, and I put a Cayenne in the same color side-by-side and that shut up a whole bunch of people.

is this Alfa comparison stuff never going to end? This Tribeca-is-a-ripoff-of-Alfa thing is so overused that it's become cliche. Aren't there any new and original thoughts out there???

I can name a bunch of other cars besides the Alfa that the Tribeca hints of: BMW, Jaguar S-Type, Jaguar XK 120/140/150, Bugatti, Studebaker Hawks of the late 50's... Do I need to go on?

Somebody turn the TRIBECA's grill upside down. I can see it in my mind's eye and it really looks good. Too bad Subaru didn't see it that way.

As for plagiarism, if Pontiac can get away with ripping off BMW's grill, I see no problem with the Subie-Alfa connection.

Doesn't make it any better looking just because the design they butchered was nice. Kind of like the Kia Amanti. Yes, it has bits of any number of nice looking cars in its design, but just because you throw bits of Jag and Benz in a blender doesn't mean it's going to come out nice looking.

By the way, that Giulia had to have been a Euro model. They switched to the far homelier Berlina style in '69 in the US. I have a complete '74 2L drivetrain sitting in the garage that I'd love to use in a hopped up Guilia sedan.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Actually I've seen that argument many times, Pontiac actually used it first, and I'm talking in the 1930s or so.

I happen to like the Tribeca. It's a bland, boring segment, full of two-box shapes. Tribeca is one of very few that are actually bold and interesting.

Correct, the GiuliaTI 1600 was taken from a website for Finnish (?) Alfa enthusiasts.

Here's another car to chew on.

My father is much more up to speed on 'Vettes than I am, so pardon my ignorance, but is that about a 1958-59?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,549
I saw one going down the freeway yesterday... white with gray coves..

    I'll hazard a guess that it is a '61?

    I believe that's a '61. I've told this story before, but....

about 10-12 years ago, a friend of the family won a "small" CA lottery ... something in the neighborhood of $350K. He bought a '61 Vette (red and white) and put a vanity plate on it:

between '56 thru '60 'vettes. Little changes in the grille, chrome trim or the shape of the coves are the giveaways. That's a 1958 which you can tell from a '56 or '57 cuz it has chrome strips on the trunk but I can't recall how you'd distinguish it from a '59 or '60.

Sorry Kyfdx, '61 was the year they came out with the ducktail rear end but I'll admit it's hard to tell what the rear looks like from than angle.

An interesting place to store the spare wheel in this 1960 ?

Yep, that's a great idea. In fact, I would like to see future pickups use this idea, but on their rear fender.

whatever that is, I bet it rusted out like a mofo in that area. Looks like a great catch for water, salt and crud.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Possibly, but today they could do that using a plastic compartment, therefore rust would not be an issue.

The spare tire freak car is a Bristol (406 I think)...being British, of course it rusted, and hard

    Bristol 406 indeed, 1960 model.

I think they might have been aluminum,...er aluminium-bodied which would help avoid rust.

    Ferrari 308GT4 c.1975
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Originally sold as a Dino, the 308GT4 pioneered the mid-engined V8 Ferrari lineup now represented by the F430. Unlike most post-1960 Ferraris the 308GT4 was bodied by Bertone.

Now for something rather more ordinary=>

IIRC that 308 is also one of the cheapest non-400 Ferraris you can buy

The ordinary car is a 1st-Gen Celica. A car I remember being very common when I was little, as a normal used car. Today I rarely see them...I didn't care much for them then, but I don't mind them now.

Oh it is right there I just can't quite think of it. Starts with an "M". Wasn't it basically a kit car? Marcos or something Spanish sounding (although if I remember correctly it was a Brit car). Could be wrong but I read about these guys in the past.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,525
Yeah, it's a Marcos of some kind. I forget who the name comes from, but it is a combination of two last names.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
It's a Marcos GT, I assume of 60s vintage. I don't know if they were sold as kits but I think
at least some were turnkey cars and I think Marcos is still around although in recievership.

60's Marcoses had wooden chassis and glass bodywork

Fintail is right about Marcos being a combo of two last names, something I'd completely forgotten but now that I think of it, wasn't Frank Costin the "Cos" of Cosworth Engineering
    as well as Marcos?

I think those Multiplas are cool in their bizarre way. It's a shame Fiat toned down the weirdness in the newer models.

The blue car is a Datsun 210 I think, c.1979

    But you nailed it.

Did you know those were RWD? Not enough power to break the tail lose, though.
