You'd actually be surprised - Wikipedia was compared to Encyclopedia Brittanica on a number of articles, and both had about the same overall level of accuracy. And regarding Porsche, that was my point, there may have been a company pre-war (even made a one-off car) but the company as a manufacturer started in 1948.

On the other hand, I've seen an elaborate prank that intentionally put false information on Wikipedia.

It's useful, sure, but generally speaking I'd want to see a 2nd source.

    What a GREAT tool!

Yep, you'd better not rely on Wikipedia for certain areas of knowledge. The car stuff isn't too bad. I've found a few errors but nothing really you'd want to fight about. Car enthusiasts tend to get onto the "how many angels on the head of a pin" arguments, and that gets tedious....well, until you have a few beers, then it starts to sound brilliant. :P

The "Dr" title in Germany is kinda funny. Everybody and his mother is a "Dr" in Germany.

Heard it on NPR this morning and was waiting for a chance to use it in passing conversation.

    Looks like early 70s...maybe a 128? Pretty plain-jane for 131.

Yep it's an 850 Berlina, I imagine the brochure shot is from an early car ca. 1964,

I saw one of those at the Jersey shore a few weeks ago (must be a beach thing). Bright red. It was at a car dealer on their used car row, and had a 2001 sign on the window. Really goofy looking in person, but at least it didn't have a winch (just nerf bars)

Well it says "Jeep" on the flank so it's just a Wrangler attempting to be a Hummer (which is a Chevy Pickup attempting to be a Jeep). :lemon:

I see the stripes so it's gotta be the GT350, or even the GT500.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
If you knew the model year you'd know whether it was a GT-350 or a GT-500.;)

PS-The center mount grille lights and hood scoop are other
Shelby cues that reveal the model year....anyone?

    It's a 67 GT 500...

    ...I think...

I know that the grille light mounting depended on the laws of the state where the car was delivered. Some had the lights mounted in the outer ends of the grille.

    It's a 67 GT 500..

Actually the picture isn't captioned so there's no way of knowing without seeing the badges if it's a 289 powered GT-350
or a 428 powered GT-500 of which roughly twice as many were made in '67 compared to the smaller engined car.

    Steve McQueen's Ferrari GT.

McQueen was driving one of these when he was busted for dui in Anchorage in 1972. (The article gives the photo away, but the mugshot is a hoot).

    Steve McQueen's Ferrari GT

Yeah, to be exact it's a 1963 Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Lusso, one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Dark Brown was seen on Porsches, Benzes and a few other cars of that era but it was pretty unusual for a Ferrari IIRC.

Blue station wagon looks like maybe a 1950 Plymouth. Brown/black car is a 1952 Chevrolet.
  • rcinmdrcinmd Member Posts: 139
I just noticed that the car has Fiat's early side marker lights, the small round ones, like we had on the 68 124 Spyder. So I'm thinking maybe it's a 1968 850.

The 850 Coupe was gorgeous, amazingly proportioned for such a tiny vehicle.

No, no, let's have FIVE louvres and FOUR strakes.....geez, somebody with a baseball bat needs to tell these designers when ENOUGH is ENOUGH!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Agreed. One subtle one in the front fender behind the wheel, preferably functional to vent the engine bay, is fine. No more, though.

I confess I know little about this one, but it's fun to look at:

HINT: It comes from the pen of one of the masters of Excess in Detroit---no not Exner...

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
Is that the Olds Division's take on the Corvette that appeared ca. 1954 as a concept/show car? It looks a lot more like a 'vette from the rear or side IIRC.

I think it might have been called the Starfire. The Master of Excess would have been Harley Earl.

  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Yep, it's Earl but it's not a Corvette...newer model year, higher line car. I know, I know, it's a one off but we do see this car from time to time in shows around the country.

It's a picture of some old SAAB pasted on a blurry road shot, in order to look fast? :P

PS - anyone know where I can see any photos/diagrams of the 'rope drive'? I've always wondered about that, never seen one. Also, what, exactly, is a 'torque tube', when not used with the 'rope drive'?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
My source said '72, but it's not reliable. '71 works ok for me. :shades:
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Oh one of my all time, slam-dunk, favorite cars!! That must be a Saab....um.....92? Splendid!

TORQUE TUBE --here's a wikipedia definition---a bit windy and obtuse, and not quite accurate, but pretty good to get you started:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque_tube

ROPE DRIVE--it's not really a "rope". I have a diagram here in my office but I don't know how to get that to you. If you Google it, you get a diagram of a Fort in Haiti, so I'm not sure what Google is up to....
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
That's it, the Saab is a prototype, the Saab 92, the very first Saab automobile, IIRC the first production Saab was the 93.

Isn't "rope drive" the flexible driveshaft they used on early Pontiac Tempests to connect the motor to the transaxle? GM was into pretty advanced stuff with their first generation of "compacts" (1960-'63) which featured aluminum block engines, transaxles, turbocharging and other pioneering technology.
