Plymouth Reliant K-Car (aka "The Jellybean")

I thought the 1983 Ford Thunderbird and subsequent Tauruses were the so-called "jellybean" cars because of their lack of straight lines and boxy shapes. Never heard "jellybean" applied to the K-cars.

I remember seeing one pimped out in SoCal, had SUPER K across the sides. :D

A Cobra with Steve McQueen...or Steve McQueen with a Cobra. Most likely an AC.
  • karsickkarsick Member Posts: 312
"Jellybean" was meant in jest, of course :P

Steve McQueen with a Cobra. Most likely an AC

That's McQueen taking delivery of his Shelby Cobra 289 ca. 1963. These were branded as Shelbys on this side of the pond, and as ACs in the UK. I have the brochure for the original '62
Cobra 260 in which it's branded as a Shelby AC Cobra/Powered by Ford.

The King of Cool was a major Car Guy back in the day.
Can you imagine going out to your garage and trying to decide wether to take the Ferrari 250 Lusso, the Jag XK-SS, the Vincent Black Shadow or the Cobra to the studio? He owned all of them at the same time! :shades:

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say this is an 83 Mirada, as the 82's had a larger side indicator light on the front wing, and the wheel style appears to be 82/83, but I must say that I have limited reference material for 80's Dodges, and of course we never had these cars over here.
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
    Nope.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Right on the nose and very impressive Mag. It is an '83 Mirada. ;)

I got it first! Although I did go with the generic "early 80's" instead of '83.

Now, where do I claim my prize again?

I'm guessing the new Renault Scenic (a special model with 2-dimensional "flatscreen" wheels)? :confuse:
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
Renault Clio Estate. The Carspace cookies don't work on this machine, so I have to go through Inside Line to get to the forums.

No one wants to guess on #12008? The black pipe arching over the upper radiator hose is a clue.

Looks like it might be something from an American Motors Corp. vehicle.

    It's actually the one-year-only Mazdaspeed Protege. The MSP3 (and 6) has a top-mount intercooler:

I knew what country it came from, but I cheated to find out what brand it was. I'm recusing myself this time.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Thanks Hudson. Magnette will probably know the year/make and model but if anyone wants to take a stab, it's an immediate postwar model produced 1946-50, the last production model for the Make.

I think this is an Invicta - in which case, if it is post-war, it must be a Black Prince. I've never seen one, they only built about a dozen, with bodies by a variety of coachbuilders and as for the date, probably 1946-48, as I think they were just selling off by the end of the 40's, having gone bust by then...

Turn signal on a Volkswagen, circa 1956 or so.
  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
Regarding Trafficators (spelling?). What was the reason for them? It seems that just a non-mechanical/non-moving light is easier/cheeper than these moving and illuminated pieces. Was it because the laws at the time dictated a moving piece to indicate turning much like someone would with their arms without signals?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Actually it's my understanding that laws in some European countries (Germany?) did require Trafficators to extend from the bodywork in that way.

I wonder what they did on the Cabrios? :confuse:

    Oh yeah, that's a l954 Beetle.

    2001 BMW 330ci/E46, 2008 BMW 335i conv/E93

  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
The older Beetles had semaphore signals, so the Trafficator thing was a way to keep that and provide the electric signals required in the US.

    http://www.airheadparts.com/page.asp?recid=37

"Q. What were those funny looking turn signals called semaphores?

Volkswagen did not introduce flashing turn signals on the Beetles until the 1955 model year and it was primarily because of an American requirement. Prior to this time, the Beetle used a type of non flashing turn signal called the Semaphore, which was essentially a finger shaped object that was lighted thru an amber/yellow colored lens. The Semaphore popped out the “B” pillar on either the left or right side of the car. Semaphore Turn Signals were what was prevalently used throughout Europe. Volkswagen continued to offer the Semaphore Turn Signal on Beetles and Type 2s (primarily in European markets) through the early 1960s."

    Triumph Stag, 1980? Edit - I guess they weren't even made in '80 - mid '70s?
  • hudsonthedoghudsonthedog Member Posts: 552
    Mmmm...yes. A Stag! That 3.0L SOHC V8 combined with a four-passenger convertible body!

    Mmmmm...
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
The engine everyone loves to hate. The Buick/Rover V8 often takes the rap, but it's not that engine in there.
  • hudsonthedoghudsonthedog Member Posts: 552
Triumph's excuse was that the Rover engine wouldn't fit. I wish MG would have complained like that when BL wanted to put that Triumph Spitfire four-banger in the Midget!
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
    It's a '74 Stag.

Hey, thanks! It's quite interesting! Not sure I agree that the Buick/Rover was a "remarkable" engine, at least not in the early days (kind of a pig actually) but it was developed into something reasonably reliable, one has to admit.

Still it would have been SOOOO much better than what they used in the Stag.

    Shifty
