Yes the design that sunk the car from the get-go. It has no GRILLE, and buyers hated it. Too bad, nice car.

That first-gen Q45 always reminded me a bit of a 1992 Crown Vic. They share many similarities...the grille-less front-end, the C-pillar with the semi-circular quarter window, and IIRC, even the rear-ends are similar.

And just like the 1992 Crown Vic, once they put grilles on these things, it just totally messed up their style. I guess the problem is that the grilles weren't really integrated into the design, but just stuck on as an afterthought.

I always liked that first-gen Q. Would one of those be hard to maintain and keep on the road nowadays?

The engine is rather complex so if you had to dig in there, that would not be pretty; otherwise, it's just a Nissan underneath it all. They are a great bargain, a good performer (sorry, automatic trans. only) but I personally find them rather unattractive.

It's a "mystery car" now and it was a "mystery car" then!

Naah. The Q has its quirks (they like to eat injectors for some reason, the earlier ones didn't have a big enough tranny cooler, the HICAS on the Q45a can get wonky but it's easily defeated), but otherwise they are pretty easy to keep up and nicely depreciated by now. Fuel economy is pretty bad, thanks to the big engine and 3.55 rear end.

That's the roadster version of the Saab Sonnett III, ca. late 1`960s IIRC. Only a handful were made.

The only Japanese car to crack the $100K collector car mark...or the $50K mark for that matter...

That is so bizarre it looks French.
  • flipbflipb Member Posts: 18
Close, I'll give it to you. It's the Saab Sonnet I, 1956.

Hard to believe this 2-stoke, 3-cylinder came from the same era as the chromed, finned, V8s being built an ocean away.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,546
Citroen CX, probably late 70s/early 80s
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I think whoever designed the Sonnett never really saw a sposrtscar, but rather a blurred photograph of one that washed up on a Scandanavian beach.

Fun to drive though if you have earplugs.

Correct. Even the shift knob was quirky.

Hard to believe it's not French. ;)

From left, Ford Fairlane (mid '60s), Rambler 660 (mid '60s) and full-size Ford wagon (mid '60s).
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,546
I think both the Fords might be 67s - the wagon is anyway.

Isn't the first one a 1966 Mercury Comet??
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,546
Could be...I get those confused...those busy stacked lights always kind of rubbed me the wrong way, they look much better on a Galaxie.

Yep, the first is a '66 Comet. The Rambler I'm not sure of, '65 or '66?

Mazda RX-7. Probably about an '80.

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

'62 Pontiac Bonneville convertible. I wasn't born yet, but my Mom had a '66 Catalina convertible. I've asked her if I was conceived in it, but never got an answer out of her. :shades:

Both of the cars in back are Mustangs, but dunno the year. '65 I guess?

Fix It Again Tony. The red one resembles a 1973 128 Fiat we once owned.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Nope, the red car is not a 128.

At top - Fiat 126. In the middle - Fiat Uno. At the bottom - Fiat 131.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
The car in the middle is not an Uno, right on the other two.

Is it a Panda? I thought it looked too big in the pic, but it could be the angle.

I remember seeing zillions of 126p's when I was in Poland a number of years ago - Polski Fiats. They would drive them around with the engine cover propped open to prevent overheating.

    Right, the caption doesn't say whether it's a 414 or a 416.
