Peugeot 505, 1979-1992 in Europe. With spoiler lip, which was quite usual. But the neighborhood and bumpers are North-American, aren't they?

Behind her, two VW. I cannot recognize the model of the van. The car backwards is one of the many versions of the Golf/Rabbit. (Or is she a Fiat Panda? Were not for the double headlights and the guessed VW logo, I would doubt between them :P )

    Regards,
    Jose

    Edit: Hudson was quicker!!

Almost, I think that's a Golf I, the II was rounder, with the rear view mirror at the front of the door.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
The lovely Peugeot 505 (with a Vanagon and Golf II/GTI behind it)

Interestingly the spoiler denotes a 505 GTI is some markets (STI in No America IIRC),
    it's a 1986 MY South African version.

The van is what we know in NA as a Vanagon, it may have been called a Transporter or Microbus elsewhere.

The four headlight VW Golf GTI looks like a Mk. I to me, IIRC Euro versions all had four h/ls like this one>

Yup, this is a more familiar VW GTI to me, and even more with the red line.

I think it may be a Citi Golf, basically a Mk1 Golf made in South Africa. Last I checked, they were still building them, 35 years after the original made its debut.

There is a nifty car that appears in the last scene of the 2008 movie, Journey to the Center of the Earth. I have been through a 6-month-old Consumer Reports car mag twice, and i can't ID it. I even looked in the credits, but I couldn't find anything. it is some kind of crossover, I think--and I suspect it's very new, or even a concept car. I uploaded a photo from the TV, but I suspect it is copyrighted, so I won't post it here. Can anyone help? Thanks. ">

Can you put in a link to the photo?

Yes! I see it’s a Mazda CX-7. It's a much better looking car in the movie than it is in the Consumer Reports magazine! Thanks very much--and thanks for showing me the Internet Movie Cars Database. I had no idea it existed, but it shouldn't surprise me.

    I appreciate your fast response.

Yes, it is indeed a "very odd one." Sort of reminds me of a Simca Aronde, but I think it's too big. Also, I don't recall there being a wagon version. . .
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,599
Some kind of weird Wartburg 311 variant...not a normal kombi with that rear window.

    Precisely, it's a 1961 Wartburg 311 "Camping". Here's another angle>

how easy it is to find stuff on the internet these days. I remember as a kid seeing some spoofy spy movie that had a chase involving a big 1960's Ford wagon and a couple of big Ford cars, that ended with the two cars hitting together head-on. I also remember the wagon being able to convert into essentially a big bordello on wheels.

For years that movie has haunted me, as I couldn't remember its title. But now, in a matter of minutes, I found it, and was watching that chase scene on Youtube, and found out that it's available on Netflix.

Before I mention the name of the movie, does my vague description above sound familiar to anybody?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,599
That rear window treatment is flamboyant by DDR standards.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,599
I remember a 65-66 Country Sedan in some kind of 60s spy movie, but I don't remember any details.

Here's a screen capture I took off the youtube video...

to pave the road all the way to the edge of the cliff, instead of wasting that money on some flimsy wire guardrail.

Yeah, I thought that was amusing, too. Oh, and the wagon had a fully stocked martini bar, so it's probably a miracle that the wagon didn't end up over the cliff! Or at least, through the matte painting! :P

Behind the Wartburg I think the other car is a Syrena.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,599
68 Mercury wagon and a 65 Ford cop car maybe.

    Movie doesn't ring a bell.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,094
It was a 1966 movie called "The Silencers" with Dean Martin and Stella Stevens. The wagon, a 1966 Mercury Colony Park, is still in existence.

As for the youtube clip that has the car chase, it's at this link. The chase itself starts about 3 minutes in.

I really don't remember much about the movie, but always remembered the chase scene. The movie looks campy enough, that I just might have to look it up on Netflix!
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,599
Aha, I am pretty sure I have seen that, the weird seating arrangement in that thing rings a bell.

I think the wagon I was thinking of was actually in a Bond film. IMCDB should confirm it.
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
Did it have the DFRS option? (Dual Facing Rear Seats)
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
I got The Silencers from Netflix about a year ago, it's a lot of fun as are all the Matt Helm movies. it was campy when it first came out all those years ago.

Just from andre1969's descriptions of the movie, I figured it was a Dean Martin flick.. :)

Seems there was a wagon in Goldfinger... though, maybe that was a sedan.. They did a lot of driving around the Ft Knox area..

    Gee, it's a Ferrari. . .

    I'll say 250 Lusso.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,094
Lemme guess, it was the comment about the fully-stocked martini bar? :P

Oh yeah, there was a red 1964 Ford Country Squire in "Goldfinger". I saw it on the IMCDB when I was trying to search for the spy wagon. Unfortunately, IMCDB doesn't have that movie. I forget now how I found out the movie. I might've googled "Spy movie wagon" or something like that.

Oh, and thanks for the recommendation on that movie, AndyS. I added it to my Netflix queue.

Yep McQueen's dark brown 250GT Berlinetta Lusso. IMO one of the best looking Ferraris ever.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
I read somewhere today that Brad Pitt is about ready to sign a deal in which in he will portray the storied actor in a major motion picture of his life.

Supposedly, the film will include many of the cars that McQueen drove, both personally as well as in some of his more popular films.

    Scheduled release is 2010.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Yep, that's McQueen's Lusso. I saw a Lusso for the first time on NY17 back in 1963. I thought it was the best-looking car I'd ever seen and 46 years later I still think so.

    McQ's car in color.

Beatiful car, indeed. Your post & replays prompted me to search for pics and some history in the web:

    Lusso

Red is my least favorite color for the Lusso, make mine black dark blue, silver or that beautiful metallic brown of McQueen's car ...as if.

Oh, please, send me any one of these free of charge and I'll take even the red!!!

But I fully agree, the Lusso is such a beauty in herself that fits better in a sober color.

A late Pontiac 6000 STE, I will guess around 1988 or so.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
I had the same Matchbox version of the Lusso. Mattel's Hot Wheels Elite version (1:18) sits on my shelf today> link

A version of this diecast in McQueen's brown metallic is in the works.

    Not a bad looking model.

The Matchbox version was also a nice casting for the period and price point, especially with those wire wheels which were used on a couple other cars.

The automobile scene that I remember from Goldfinger is the one where Odd Job shoots a guy he has in a mid 60's Lincoln Continental, has the car crushed into a cube, and then hauls it away in a 60 or so Falcon Ranchero. Not only would that Ranchero never be able to haul a cubed Continental, it would fall over dead before you got it fully dropped into the bed.

I remember watching that scene and thinking to myself that they removed the engine/transmission. Maybe that saved enough weight.
