The stripped down vehicle is the remains of a VW Beetle. Can't tell the year. . . :)

The red car does look Mazda-ish, but small for a Luce.

The Detroit iron should be easy, I will leave it for others :shades:
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
I was wondering if the red car previously identified as a Mazda Luce might instead be a Datsun 410/411.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,560
I googled the 410/11...the rear quarter panel is different. It's very distinctive in that old pic...it has to be the clue.

I wonder if it could also be a weird old Isuzu or something which sold a few examples during those smalltime importer days.

The "Kenosha Iron" in the picture is a 1962 Rambler Classic.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Yes, that is what a Beetle based Dune Buggy looks like before they put the body on.
Judging by the seats it's a '50s or early 60's model.

Hmmm, could it be an Isuzu Bellet (not sold in USA AFAIK but the picture's from CDN).>

I think the Bellet was sold here actually.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,560
That's it, the rear quarter looks right.

There was one of those on local craigslist several months ago, and it was even a diesel. I had half-baked thoughts of giving it a look...extreme weirdness quotient there.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
You know, I'm thinking it WAS the diesel that was sold here.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,560
Isuzu was pretty big on diesels in the old days, wasn't it? We can't forget those lovely diesel Isuzu-Buick-Opel crossbred models.

Now that I think of it, the car that was for sale locally wasn't a Bellett, but a Bellel. Brilliant idea to make names so similar. But it was a diesel, something like this:

    Still pretty weird.

It's a Pontiac. But it has extra striping and a label above the rear taillight that's not US, from what I can see. It it Australian or Canadian? The overhang behind the rear wheel looks shorter than a premium model indicated by the "excess" of chrome, so I suspect it's a Cheviac?

    1957 Pontiac Bonneville.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
It certainly is not Australian (I don't think Pontiacs were sold there and it's LHD). I think you're overthinking this one. It is a Poncho, anyone want to be more specific?

I hadn't come up with a picture of a Bonneville as lostwrench identified it until later when I searched for that word "Bonneville" for a '57. That's it.

I am used to some coming up with variations on cars that aren't quite what my provincial mind thinks they are. ;) :shades:

    1957 Pontiac Bonneville

Yup, to be exact it's a 1957 Pontiac Star Chief Custom Bonneville.

I'm not sure why it looks short to Imidazol, perhaps his monitor needs adjusting.

..I'm thinking Route 66. The car is a 1962 Corvette and one of the actors is Martin Milner. I forget the other guy's name.
  • jwilliams2jwilliams2 Member Posts: 910
Maybe a 1962 Corvette in Route 66, with Martin Milner as Tod Stiles and George Maharis as Buz Murdock??
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
You're correct except that the car is a '61, not a '62. 1962 models did not have the chrome strip outlining the cove on the side. Route 66 ran from 1960 to 1964 and a new Corvette was featured every year. The first episode (aired 10/7/60) featured a 1960 model that shared the same non-standard feature as the '61 in the picture.

Can you see it in this photo of the original episode?>

50-50 chance. Gotta be either the luggage rack or the spinner wheels.

Edit: Lets go a third, a third, a third. The dash mounted rear view mirror.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Those spinner wheels are Kelsey-Hayes wires that were an expensive option on certain 1950s American cars. I've never seen them on a Corvette but they must have been a factory option because the producers of Route 66 got their cars from Chevy division directly. Those were real load-bearing wire wheels, not covers but I suspect that the spinners were fake. The wires appeared on the '60 & '61 Route 66 but the '62 and later cars had the standard stamped disc wheels w wheel covers (those also had fake spinners).

The luggage rack was another factory option commonly seen on all sorts of sports cars of the day. The dash-mounted mirror was standard issue on all C1 Corvettes.
It ididn't move up to the windshield frame until the C2 (Sting Ray) came out in '63.

The pair of big SU carbs sez "British". I'd guess it's an MG-B, post '68.

    Not an MG....
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I'm gonna take this because I spent so many years taking these apart.

This is a Volvo B18 engine from a model122/123 that someone spent more money on than the car is worth. :P

    Probably a late 60s, 4-speed car.

Actually I suppose it could be a B20. They look the same, but it's not a B20E because it's not injected! It should be a B18 though. It's not a B16 because the oil filler cap isn't in the middle and the valve cover isn't chrome. Power brake suggests later 122 model.

    Good engine!
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,143
Yep, a Volvo, in an Amazon, pic from the Amazon web site
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Ah, a 1966 model I see. The B18 was one of the best engines in the world IMO. I have never seen one with a thrown rod. I'm sure it has happened, but it's very unusual. People sometimes put these in MG TCs and TDs--that is, the people who I haven't killed already for doing that. You'll also find them in period kit cars, and in small runabouts, in their marine configuration. Sometimes people put B20E heads on them because of the larger valves, and a special camshaft to eliminate inherent camshaft weaknesses in the B18.

That's a Hino Contessa 1300 ca. early 1960s. Pitter, may I suggest you post these one or two at a time, you'll get better responses that way.

Also (and this plea goes to anyone who posts pictures), please size the pictures properly. I got behind and had about 40 posts to go through, and literally could not get the text to all be readable, even by telling to to go to the post after an oversized picture, because there was no sequence of 20 posts that did not contain at least one oversized picture.
