Cool car. I'd have stolen it as a teenager, too.

Hope my dad wouldn't have made ME spend the night in jail, LOL.

The most beautiful car in the world. All that's missing is Kathryn Hepburn driving with a long scarf blowing behind her in the wind.

I agree - this is one beautiful design. BUT, what are those Caddy hubcaps doing on it? And that steering wheel sure doesn't look stock....
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Gorgeous - still looks stylish today which unfortunately isn't true of many of today's sometimes cartoonish designs.

I thought the body-color front bumper came in '72.

Aside from having driven a rental from LA to SF, I can't claim and expertise on the dreadful '71-'72 Mustangs but I did find a picture of a black-bumper ''71 at oldcarandtruck pictures.com. [Scroll down to '71 MY]

Looks like an AMC Spirit hatch, certainly no Eagle badging on it, which was more common around here in SE Wisconsin.

It's a four-door blob made by VAM, a Mexican affiliate of American Motors. The hatch and rear clip come from the Spirit, while the rest is from the Concord.

You're correct Stephen, it was known as the VAM Lerma

I'd say that's about a 2001 VW CityGolf from South Africa. They kept the Mk1 Golf bodyshell in production there for what seems like forever.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
That's right Stephen 987. The VW Citi Golf was produced in the Republic of South Africa through the 2009 model year. There were a number of special editions over the course of the years including the Citi GTS above, the last 1000 Citi Golfs produced were known as the VW Citi Mk.1

I'll take the red Jag (which I'm guessing is a series 2 E-type ca. 1969) and the dark-colored Mercedes on the far left, which is a mid-'70s W116 sedan (most likely a 450SEL).

Y'all can have the rest. :D
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
OK, now that the cream of the crop is taken I'll try the mostly miserable
    leftovers. All early 1980's:
    Chevrolet Cavalier
    Ford Mustang
    VW Rabbit
Pontiac TransAm - probably '83 (the only non-miserable)
    Buick Regal
    Chrysler LeBaron
    GMC pickup
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Actually, the car you identified as a VW Rabbit appears to be a Plymouth Horizon or Dodge Omni and the car you identified as a Chrysler LeBaron is a circa 1983-84 Ford LTD.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I believe Rabbit and Omni/Horizon actually shared underpinnings, so the resemblance is understandable.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,543
an omni. but I don't think they shared anything more than a resemblence.

and for sure it is a Ford next to the PU

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,135
A very strong resemblence, also I think the early ones used VW engines.

Stephen is right about the Series 2 Jag. It has the open headlights that were the biggest visual difference but you can also barely make out the side marker lights and the lack of turn signal housings above the bumper and under the headlights, they were moved to an under bumper location but are barely visible in the blurry foto.

Wgrafer has the other ones covered pretty well. FWIW the guys at imcdb.com say the black hatch is an Omni. I'm sure the car next to the pickup is an Ford
    LTD (Gen V-'83-'86 Fox platform).

I found out something I didn't know when I researched the E-Type SII. I thought the Second Series were introduced in 1968 in response to federally mandated safety rules but it turns out that they had a kind of Series I v.2 in 1968 which had open headlights, headrests and reversing lamp but retained the above bumper turn signal locations, small tailights and knock off wire wheels of the SI.

Those were eliminated for the 1969 Series II and subsequent model years.

The Omni/Horizon 1.7 engine was a carbureted, long-stroke version of the VW 1.6. I believe some other components were also "borrowed" from VW designs, though the parts themselves might not interchange.

The Omni really came into its own when they replaced the VW engine with the 2.2 from the K-car. It became a much more capable vehicle, without sacrificing either fuel economy or affordability.

It's really kind of sad that these cars are gone. They were a lot more purposefully designed than Detroit's later small-car offerings.
