The black car in the doorway is a (British) Ford Consul MkII while the bonnet sticking in to the picture on the right is a Ford 100E Anglia or the van equivalent. I think there is another Ford 100E van (we knew it as the Thames, but no idea what it was called over with you) in the third row, above the Studebaker Hawk.

    2011 Renault Latitude...

Wow, so generic looking for a French car.

It's handsome but disappointing at the same time. :D

I knew it was a '61 Dodge but I couldn't remember what they called the low end model.

Is that the Munster's house in the background? Anyway, it appears to be a 1961 Mercury Monterrey convertible. This is about the time Mercury started reverting back to a deluxe Ford. This is the philosophy that eventually made Mercury irrelevant and killed it.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
I don't know if that's the Munster's house but the still is from Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

As to your other point don't recall any time when Mercurys weren't "deluxe Fords" and I grew up in the 40s and 50s. I suppose you could say that there was an attempt to make Mercs into budget Lincolns ('57-'60) but that's only a hair away from Deluxe Fords. ;)

Kind of the same as Buicks, Pontiacs, and Oldsmobiles are deluxe Chevrolets.

    Off topic, but........
Yes, that is the Munsters' house.
It is a house which has been used in movies beginning in 1946!
It was also used in the TV shows:
    Alfred Hitchcock Presents
    The Munsters
    Leave it to Beaver
    Ironside
    Murder She Wrote
    Desperate Housewives.

For most of that period of time I am basically in agreement, but the early '50s Mercury looked nothing like the equivalent year Ford, and I defy you to find any '57 Ford (or anything else automotive for that matter) that looked like a '57 Turnpike Cruiser.

    I like your off topic.

I remember ages ago touring the back lot as Universal Studios when the park was only a few staged events. They took us down this street of house fronts and I learned that Beaver Cleaver and Marcus Welby lived in the same house.

I think "The Burbs" was also filmed around that set.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
The 49-51 Mercs seemed different. I think the late 50's Merc's were on generally longer wheelbases which is why upper level Edsels were Mercury based while lower line ones were Ford based. However, that was all over after the 61's were introduced.

I always felt Mercury tended to be a marketing problem for Ford. Even when they were a bit different from Ford, it was never clear in their adverting whether they were supposed to be up against Dodge and Pontiac, or Chrysler and Buick. The again, the Chrysler positioning started getting confusing in the 60's when the Newport began competing against lower priced vehicles. In fact, even today I think the line between Dodge and Chrysler is much blurrier than that between Chevy and Buick.

Hard to believe that was the same Exner that penned the beautiful 57's.

Yeah he did, only with the '61 maybe he stuck the pen in his eye.

Or the late, overpraised Eagle Premier. :P

Actually for the time, a car with some interesting and advanced features, IMO---well-conceived, poorly executed and poorly marketed. The joint venture Renix electronics (Renault + Bendix) wasn't so hot as I recall, and the V-6 engines seem to enjoy overheating.

Ah, what might have been in 1990, with a bit more effort. Instead, a virtually worthless car today.

Not an Eagle Premier, but you're in the same ball park. It was even more obscure. Hint: It briefly brought back an old nameplate.
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
Ah, the "Dodge Monaco" version of the Premier.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
That's it! The example pictured is a 1992 model. I thought it was a terrible car to wear the once-proud Monaco moniker.

The car in the center is prewar but surely you all know it. There are bits and pieces of all sorts of postwar cars in this photo from Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955-62) even a couple of imports>

Check out that vulnerable gasoline tank!
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
Kind of reminds me of the hot rod from " The Shaggy Dog" or maybe the car in "American Graffiti"

I'll take just a few...to the right of the hot rod looks like a 61 Ford Galaxie 4 door HT (I think these got the "Victoria" name)...and in the background I spot a Morris Minor sedan and an oval window Beetle.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I agree the car next to the hot rod is probably a 61 Ford, the other side is a 60/61 Comet. Could that be a Falcon or Fairlane wagon next to the 61? I can make out a 60 Chevy by the building, as well as 59 Mercury and Pontiac coupes with a mid 50's Olds in between. Maybe around a 60 Caddy six window and a mid 50's T-Bird to the front and right of the people by the hot rod?

The Hot rod is the iconic '32 Ford HiBoy Roadster but the car next to it could be a '61 Mercury rather than a Ford>

    image

Mercs seem to proliferate in these images from AHP and in those days TV shows often had arrangements with specific makes.

There's a '59 or '60 Mercury behind the guy bending over the engine, I'd know that big wraparound anywhere. Can anyone tell if that;s a Chevy small block he's working on?

Doesn't look like a Chevy engine, no. Wrong filler cap and cooling hose positions. Hard to say for sure, though---besides, it was kind of a sin to put a Chevy motor in HiBoy back then.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
Oh yeah, I didn't even think of those. That's likely what it is.

Those 60-61 Ford and Mercurys are just about gone now...each one probably provided the metal for 4 1979 Civics.

There's an interesting looking car amidst all these shoe-boxes, parked in front of the shoe store (ironically). But I can't tell what it is.
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
Parked On left: white '63 Chevy, '661 Ford Galaxie, '59 Ford, '63 Chevy Impala,
Porsche, and yet another '63 Chevy Impala, Nash Metropolitan(!), and I'll leave
    the rest.....

I don't think the second car on the right is a '61 Galaxie, it's noticeably larger than the cars in front and back of it. I think it's a 1964 Buick Wildcat>

    image

IMO the car in front of the shoe store looks too big to be a Porsche, I think it's a pre-'58 Corvette C1. I don't seen any Metropolitans, where is it?

Who wants to tackle the cars in the traffic lanes?

I don't know if it's just me, but the advert banner on the right hand side

now means I can't see the last four words or so of each sentence.

We used to be able to juggle this when pictures were posted too

wide but there is never a post that isn't now

I know it's a commercial site, but surely it must be possible to

    do better than this

Otherwise we have to post everything like text messages
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,696
That overlap occurs only when a picture that's greater in width than 650 pixels is in the page being viewed.

Trying picking a message number right after the offending graphic post and enter tha in the GOTO message box. The rest of the posts should now be readable entirely.

Sorry but I don't see any Buick Wildcat in pic (either right or left).
It's definitely a white '61 Ford Galaxie on LEFT between the '63 Chevy
    and the '59 Ford.
Oncoming traffic: Ford Falcon Ranchero ('64?), '61 Mercury Comet,
    '57 Ford.
On right: '62 Pontiac leaving parking spot, '58 Plymouth wagon,
'61 Oldsmobile, '55 Buick up the street.

A better idea would be for those posting pictures to limit them to 650 pixels wide. ;)
  • colin_lcolin_l Member Posts: 591
Or the forum to automatically limit images to such width. :)
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
But that might infringe on your 1st Amendment Rights and Edmunds wouldn't want to do that---so we'll give you the freedom to limit your pix to the proper size. :P

I like it most on my widescreen laptop where fully half the posting area is consumed by the grey right margin. It's time for Edmunds to move past 1994...

It's definitely a white '61 Ford Galaxie on LEFT between the '63 Chevy

I dunno what you're seeing but the second car on left is a lot darker than the white '63 Chevy in front of it and and the White '59 Ford behind it so it doesn't look white to me.

That said, taking another look at it I think it is a '61 Ford after all. I can make out the rounded rear fenders and the Galaxie style C-pillar.
