Ford Thunderbird, probably right around 1990 or so.

Wait a sec - is that a Chevy Lumina coupe?

Hard to be sure when you only see half of it! LOL

Pretty sure it's a T-bird. I think I saw that car on Car Crazy or some such show.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Yep, it's a 90-ish T-Bird, at least they didn't put it on a FWD platfor.

In the little town where my mom lives, there used to be one of those mutated 49 Fords that had the midsection of a 87-88 Cougar...it was pretty ghastly. An absolute lack of taste plus a little money can never turn out well.

The Cougar seemed to be the more common target, I thought about those, too.

I guess it's RWD and has a boxy C-pillar, plus they were cheap and not very well beloved, so plentiful donor cars. My dad owned an '88 Cougar. Ran on 5 of 6 cylinders most its life.

The custom car results were awful, though.

...but, rather, a "mystery" license plate.

While out running errands this morning, I spotted a car with the following vanity plate:

    9 ATE 6

Who can tell me the make and model of car it was attached to?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Probably a Cayman, because if it was a regular base level Boxster a woman would be driving it and they probably wouldn't care to advertise the factory designation or other Porsche esoteria.

anyway, that's my guess and I'm stickin' to it.
  • jwilliams2jwilliams2 Member Posts: 910
I would guess a Boxter. Men own and drive them too. :D

Shifty's close but he's forgotten that all Cayman's are Type 987s as are all post-'04 Boxsters . First gen Boxsters ('97-'4) are 986s so that's prolly what it was attached to. BTW Shifty I don't recall ever seeing a female driving one, you need to get out of Cali more often.

Top 10 Cars Driven by Women:

Top 10 Cars Driven by Women:
    10. Chrysler Pacifica: 59.81 percent female drivers
    9. Hyundai Tiburon: 60.18 percent female drivers
    8. Mazda CX-7: 60.19 percent female drivers
    7. Honda Pilot: 60.28 percent female drivers
    6. BMW Z4: 60.31 percent female drivers
    5. Nissan Versa: 60.58 percent female drivers
    4. Toyota Yaris: 61.86 percent female drivers
    3. Hyundai Elantra: 64.28 percent female drivers
    2. Kia Spectra: 66.48 percent female drivers
    1. Honda Fit: 80.46 percent female drivers

It's interesting that the BMW Z4 made the list. I have no idea what % of Boxster owners are women. Perhaps you are right--it's a California thing.

Apparently, from what I've researched, no known woman has ever been recorded as buying one of these:

In my area a good amount of Boxsters seem to be female-driven too. I don't see it nearly as much in any other Porsche, or any other sports car really. Well, unless you add Miata to the list.

Okay, found it. Not as many women as I thought--but still, one in 4 is nothing to sneeze at.

    From the LA Times:

"Breaking it down by model, the portion of women in the driver's seat of a 911 has grown from 12% to 22%, Boxster babes have increased from 15% to 24%, and the share of female Cayenne drivers is a considerable 35%."

Now, back to our regularly scheduled topic (sorry for the diversion--I couldn't let go) :P

I am just shocked that the new beetle isn't on the list. Doesn't that have to be up there at about 102%?

It was, in fact, a Boxster, triple black, driven by a male on I-25 this morning.

That is because they are given to women as gifts. As in the case of one I know that was given one by her husband just before they divorced.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
So it turns out that the 911 owners (22%F) are proportionately almost as likely to be women as Boxster owners (24%F)--- B.F.D. ;)

No fair, you just saw the Z4 made the list and the Miata didn't, so use that model if you really want to poke fun.

FWIW, AutoNation used to provide this data and Kelley Blue Book published it, and back then they had about 60% of Miata owners as being male. It's a mid-life crisis car, so to be more specific it was 45 year old (median age), married men.

Women are practical so they tended more towards the VW Cabriolet at the time, which had a back seat. I bet it's the Eos today, too.

Too bad they no longer publish that information.

So sorry to burst the stereotype but the Miata is not a girls car, and I'm a bit surprised that the Z4 is.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Well these are based on registrations and that's tricky; also, they don't split things up like between a Boxster and a Boxster S.

I'm not surprised about the Z4 at all. Women jumped all over that car from the get-go with the Z3. It's got a torquey motor for stickshift drivers, and very efficient automatic transmission for another option. It's not a temperamental car to drive.

Miata got that "rep" because of the cuteness factor and also because of size restrictions for the driver. Me in a Miata? I look like a shriner in a parade, as one of our members once said.

I am surprised by the Z4, but even more surprised there aren't any volvos on the list. And.... no minivans?!

  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
well I will lodge an official protest. I really don't give this list a lot of credibility. I still think 99% of all Boxster owners are women :P
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
size restrictions for the driver. Me in a Miata?

I managed to shave the back of my dead pedal to move it back about half inch, while still appearing totally stock and serving its function. That's on my '08.

I had a '93 and had modified the seat tracks for thigh support, too.

Some people go as far as cutting the throttle pedal and using spacers to move it back, away from the driver's seat.

Still won't fit you if you're, oh, about 6'3" or taller.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,517
I've known more female than male Miata drivers, but I suppose geographic area is at play here.

I'd be curious as to owners vs drivers too. Eos has to have a strong female majority. And of course the Beetle, has to be 90%+.

Other cars that likely have female majorities - Lexus HS and RX, Acura MDX, MB ML, BMW X3, Audi Q5
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Funny because female co-workers own an HS, Eos, and a Q5.

Oddly the Eos is her husband's.

New Beetle, per AutoNation, was heavily female biased. I wonder how they didn't hit this top 10.

Yeah, I figure the percentage of New Beetle buyers who are women must have been similar to the percentage of Viper buyers who are men.

Isn't that the infamous Dodge LaFemme?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,517
Yep, it even came with a compact and umbrella, and was offered only in a two tone pink and white IIRC
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,517
A man driving an Eos...I suppose it can exist, I have known of a couple of men who drove Beetles, and they weren't even of the stereotype. Well, they were wacky new residents... :shades:

I have to believe the Beetle has at least a 90% female driving demographic.

Heck, I once saw a woman driving a fintail! Those have to be about 90% male too.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Photographic PROOF that it *can* happen.

Of course the guy is obviously a furrinner.....

Heck, I would drive an EOS. Foldable hardtop, turbo, manual trans? It is either that or the 335i for like $20k more.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,517
But kind of feminine styling and of course the VW quality issues...I might save for the car from Munich :shades: Then again, a 3er cabrio isn't particularly masculine either.

Speaking of VW, I wonder what amount of Jettas and Beetles have a dead headlight or tail light...it seems they all do.

Unless it was a CL or a hyper black series or DTM CLK, I think I will stick to sedans. I guess I am boring ;)

The moving car in the foreground looks like a 1955-56 Ford Sunliner convertible. The panel truck is a 1948-50 Ford. The black car ahead of the Sunliner looks like a 1952 Ford Mainliner. The white car approaching it may be a 1954 Hudson. The cars at the gas station are two 1957 Fords - one a hardtop and the other might be a wagon. The car on the side street is an 1955-56 Ford hardtop.

    It's his wife's car

    LOL

I was gonna say it's a chop, that car's not RHD, but I was too slow...

I considered one, actually, since I have kids. Every VW owner I know has had never-ending issues, and every one talked me out of it.

It's funny, with VWs you either find loyal hard-core fans, or haters that were burned by previous experience.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
Huh ... all this talk about VW ownership reminds me of the '99 New Beetle we leased, then purchased. We had it for 5 years and, I think, about 60-70K miles.

Yes, it had a few issues ... O2 sensor, some power steering issues. But, nothing that ever left us stranded. Dealer was pretty decent about dealing with all the repairs. Fortunately, we had bought the extended warranty when we purchased at the end of the lease; that saved us a bit of money.

We were lucky, I suppose, in that we got a GL model rather than the GLS, so we didn't have power windows and the annoying regulator issue.

And yes, I drove that car just as much as my wife did, even with a (plastic) flower in the vase!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'm sure this is a case of the people with problems complaining far more vocally than someone who is happy would brag.
