    Sorry jwilliams, no Chevy here...
The olds is a '54, the Mercury is a '56, and the small one next to the '55 Caddy looks like a '55 or '56 Hudson Hornet to me.
  • jwilliams2jwilliams2 Member Posts: 910
Yeah, I see it's not a Chevy. Tailights look similar. But the roofline is different. Not sure what it is.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Good eye jwilliams. I thought that might be a '55 Chevy but it's way smaller than the other cars, too small I think to be a Hornet. Then I thought it might be a Hudson Jet which was smaller but the tailights are wrong.

I thought it must be some sort of Opel or Vauxhall but I can't find one that looks so much like a Chevy. :confuse:  :confuse:

It does very much resemble an Opel Olympia

Is the width of the C-pillar as wide as the white car in this picture?
Or it just the difference in the angle that makes this one look larger?

Wow! Where did this wider view pic come from???

Mystery solved, thanks guys. The '57 Opel Olympia really does resemble a '55 or '56 Chevy from that angle but I wonder how it made it's way to Northern California back then. I don't recall seeing any Opels in the USA until theBuick-Opel tie-up in the late '60s/early 70s.

The "Discover Opel" website shows that Opel sold 4000 of these in the US in 1957, and almost 20,000 in 1958. So I guess it is possible.

I remember seeing some of these when I was a little kid. I thought the wagons were particularly nice, but heck I was a little kid. IIRC Opels were sold by Buick and Vauxhalls by Pontiac back then. Didn't see near as many British Ford's on the road though.

60 Dodge, perhaps Polara? I've always felt 1960 was sort of a low point in postwar car design. This one actually looks better than a few of the others that year IMHO.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
    It's a '60 Dodge but not a Polara. Anyone?

    How about a Dodge Matador....
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,541
if this is a matador, I take back anything bad I ever said about the mid 70's AMC banana mobile version. compared to this monstrosity, the AMC version should be enshrined in the MOMA

What do folks think this is? It's a car some police would like to identify:

Tough one. Definitely early 90s design. I was thinking Hyundai Scoupe or Impreza coupe but its hard to match up.

I agree on GM, but the tail lights look wrong for Cadillac. How about something like a '91 Buick Regal (but this isn't it, either):

I believe that '60 Dodge is a "Pioneer" model. I think it was one step below the "Matador" in pricing...second from the top.

I think the Regal idea might be correct... There is a wire, or something in the foreground of the picture that is making the front bumper look bigger.... but, you are actually seeing the obstruction...

Parking lamp seems to match that Regal... along with everything else...

My guess is that the one car with so much detail hiding behind the stop sign, is a late '80's Buick Somerset/Skylark, or at latest, a '92 or later Skylark (complete redesign).

    "It's a '60 Dodge but not a Polara. Anyone? "

Well, it sure looks like a '60 Dodge Polara to me. Matador shared the extra fins, but had less trim; Phoenix, Pioneer, and Seneca were 'Darts' with smaller fins.

Is someone thinking this is a 'D500'??? D500 was just an engine option on top of whatever model (eg: Polara D500), but it can't be identified from this angle as the only indicator was a small d500 badge on the trunk lid.

I would still call this a Polara.

The rear looks like Buick Century, circa 1989. The stop sign is in the way, but something looks like the 2-door versions of those A-bodies which was a rare car.

The wheels don't look right at all. Large openings and not as many as most hub caps had around the perimeter (circumference).

Well let's unpack this a little: The rear windshield has a shallow angle to it, looks like---also the hubcaps are worth looking at. Deck lid is very short.

The '60 Dodge is the little remembered Matador.

It's not your eyes that get all blurry, it's the photo. You've got all the ones I can make out except for the tail end of a Giardeneria (Italian for station wagon) at the extreme left which could be a number of makes/models but probably (based on numbers sold) is a Fiat 500.

    Great job Stephen987.

I see Italian wheels! I see Pinanfarina badges! I see badly aligned bumpers!

    Or am I seeing things?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
You see a Fiat 130 coupe, which for some bizarre reason I actually kind of like
  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165
Sorry, Andy, but I'll have to disagree. The wheel covers and the brightwork behind the rear tires indicate a Polara.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Probably because you know, it being Italian, it will be fun to drive (when running).
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
Big blunt 70s Italian styling, looks like a Rolls Camargue, probably rusts at the mere mention of water and has a high propensity for fall-apart, body and trim pieces are unobtanium - especially on this continent, will get you kicked out of AAA or any roadside assistance plan - what's not to like?

According to Hemmings both the Camargue and the 130 Coupe were styled by Paolo Martin of Pininfarina.

Sorry, Andy, but the tail end of the little wagon on the extreme left of the Italian photo is not any Fiat, but a Mini Traveller - being Italy it is almost certainly an Innocenti Mini.
It is difficult to see any others that haven't been spotted already, ut on extreme right, driving away ahead of the Lancia, is a Fiat 127, over the beonnet of the Lancia is a white Fiat 500, and just ahead of that is another Fiat - I think its a 128 estate, but not sure - there is something funny about it and it could be anAutobianchi, but its too blurry to tell. Finally, you can just make out an olive green car bonnet over the front of the red FIat 126, and that looks like a Fiat 128.
