In '58 it seems all of Detroit went crazy for quad headlights. I never liked what it did to most of the cars. On the other hand, it looks pretty good on the "Task Force" Chevy trucks, where it accentuates the "bulldog" look of the shorty stepsides in particular:

But think of how ugly a '57 Imperial w/o the quad headlights looks....

Anyway, behind the red '58 Chev Truck I think I spy a maroon '64
Chevelle and a yellow & black '52 Buick Riviera. That's as good
    as my monitor will go......

L to R, '64 Barracuda, '64 Valiant, who-the-hell-knows-Jeep, and '61 Dodge wagon. And, of course, an unmistakable '59 Chevy in the background.

I like '57 Fords too. I'm from a Chevy family, but I'd enjoy owning a '57 Ford today way, way, way more than a '57 Chevy. They also outsold Chevy that year, although that's lost on a lot of people.

I always loved the red and black color combination on '57 Fords, and the two-door sedans for '57 and '58, in Fairlane series, looked good...thin pillars and door frames covered in chrome--looked like hardtops.

Actually, my favorite Fords of all are the '56 Fairlane hardtop coupes--Victoria or Crown Victoria. The details over the '55 really improve it IMHO. I also very much like '61 Starliners, and the '61-63 Ford pickups with the unitized body/bed--where the rear wheel opening size and shape mimicked the front.

    An old Postal Service jeep.

I like Starliners too, but I actually prefer the 1960, with its fender line chrome and weird flat fins. A pretty car.

When I was a kid my dad had a red and white 1960 Country Sedan as his hobby car...neat old beast, got tons of attention. He kicked himself from the day he sold it.

Good eye---yes an Iso Grifo coupe. Helluva find...a bit rougher than it looks, but still probably worth $35K--$50K as is, where is.

Is it Chrysler powered? I could look it up, but just want to see if my memory for useless facts is still working. :)

I don't know what all they used, but the one in this car looked like a Chevy. I think they used Ford V8s later on in the 70s. You could order these cars with pretty hairy HP options, and for their day, they were wicked fast, with a chassis that could actually handle it.

It's called the FinnJet by its owner/artist/creator and it's constructed from 3 different cars, but only 2 different "makes." Plus "various bits and pieces from 40 other cars" but you can read all the sordid details here. Meanwhile can you spot the 2 makes frankensteined into this limo? Hint: It's a also a melding of import+domestic content.

The middle and rear sections are built on the Mercedes-Benz W123 station wagon body. I think the nose section is from a Plymouth.

Hey, that's pretty good! According to the link it's "two 1980s Mercedes wagons with a 1962 Chrysler Imperial." And that's before throwing in the kitchen sink or at least the sauna.

It doesn't look that different from an actual '62 Imperial. :P

Those middle headlight pieces are from a MB W111/112/108/109 too.

The weirdest interpretation of the DaimlerChrysler "merger" out there.

I think a lot of those got Chevy 427s, so a pretty hairy beast indeed.

You could probably hold about 6 water bottles on that white stripe on the side. LOL

I'm not sure what the model designation for the "woody" wagon was, but I'll guess it's a 1957 Mercury Colony Park. I don't know what the non-woody wagons were called.
  • tmarttmart Member Posts: 2,403
    Voyager and Commuter.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Right on the nose Lemko. IIRC the tin-side Merc wagons were called "Commuters"
    back then.

This shot of a '56 Monterey Custom illustrates the huge growth spurt experienced by standard sized cars in 1957 (compare it to the '57 Colony Park)>

Does that 56 have Pontiac rally wheels on it?
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
Mercury kept making these 4-door hardtop (no post) wagons through '59. I remember riding in a '59 - LOTS of creaking and cracking sounds....... But they looked great!
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Didn't Chrysler keep making a four-door hardtop wagon through 1964?

Yup. And I remember riding in a '63 Chrysler wagon that belonged to a friend of
    my Dad. It was QUIET.......

Looks like one of those "water bags" cars used to carry back then, strapped to the front bumper.

Close, it's an Airflyte. The still is from a 1953 movie, The Hitchhiker.

Chrysler did have HT wagons through 64. I also recall riding in a friend's dad's 60 Mercury HT wagon. I believe Merc went back to being a Ford clone in 61.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I'm going to guess around a 51 Dodge.

I love looking at old car brochures and old advertising. When I was a college student I wasted more than a little time looking at old magazine ads in the back library stacks. I also wasted a lot of time looking at coeds. The library never really was a good place for me to try studying - too many distractions! Thanks for the link.

A good way to keep water cool without ice or air conditioning.
Water sweating through the bag + movement of the car causing wind = enhanced evaporation = a cooling process.

I had one of those umpteen years ago. "Cool" is a relative term. :)

So, is this cool? (That's a cutaway, not a7 passenger convertible btw).

  • tmarttmart Member Posts: 2,403
Would be cooler if it were really a convertible!
