The front of your Pegaso looks more like the Cars 2 character to me too. But the character's first name is Finn for a reason.

The Pegaso Z-102 looks finnier, but McMissile isn't based (mostly) on a Spanish car.

And the sales brochure of the day

    This was the US version:

I LOVE '59 Caddys! Way back in the day (around 1966) I had a chance to buy a '59 2-dr hardtop the same color as the convert above for $1200. Sadly, my Dad wouldn't 'sport' me the cash.
A year later I was able to get a '59 Chrysler new Yorker with a 413, not as nice as the 300 pictured above , but pretty good for $300! Wish I had it now...

Never owned one, but I love to gaze at them! :)
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
The 1959 Cadillac was also a very well-made car. There are lots of survivors.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
I had the chance to buy a light blue 1975 Ford LTD Landau, which was the two-door version, as my first car. My Dad looked it over and discovered hidden rust behind the rear wheel well that was about to come through and said I'd best reject that one. It had the hidden headlamps like the car on that brochure. I thought those 1975-78 LTDs were sharp cars, especially with the hidden headlamps. I reminds me of a contemporary Lincoln which I'm sure was Ford's intent.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
My dad had a 73 Ford - what a pile. I think the Impala was definitely a better car that year.

59 Caddy or 58 Chrysler 300, I like both of them. Tough call, but I think I'll take the 300.

How can you say it's lousy, when it doesn't open until Friday! Have you seen it?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Just reporting what I hear. No plans to see it anytime soon.

Any more guesses on the Finn?

    Going, going...

Was inspired by two cars, Bond's 1964 Aston Martin DB5 and for the fins, a 1958 Peerless.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
My source gives a nod to the DB5, but says the grill is wrong.

"...Jay Ward, who worked on the movies’ character development and has the title of Cars Franchise Guardian. Ward says McMissile has design cues from a number of vintage European sports cars, but is really based on the Peerless GT, an obscure British model of the late 1950s."

1937 540K Special Roadster - and you can buy the real thing at auction soon. Estimated price will be north of 8 million. Three known copies in existence.

My Dad had a 1972 Ford LTD Country Squire. It was also a pile. It rusted with a vengeance that would embarrass a Vega.

Beautiful styling (top pic), but I wonder if that brilliant red paint pigment would have been available back in the day?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
I'm sure it was available but if not polished monthly it would have chalked over and turned to a flat brick red-orange.

It probably was. I wasn't around back then, and it is possible my camera oversaturated the red color a bit.

Does it have cupholders? What kind of gas mileage does it get? :P

Well, it's got to very late 1958 as I spy a white '59 Mercury all the way to the right on expanded view.

I see the nose of a Dauphine at far bottom left, I will leave the rest for everyone else

Good eye on the '59 Merc Grafer. It does have the higher top windshield brow that came on the '59-'60 models.

Those 59 and 60 Mercury's always seemed a bit over the top to me. But they were easy to spot.

Compared to what? '59 Caddies and Lincolns were even more over-the-top, it was an era of wretched excess.

BTW, I learned to drive on a '59 Monterey, what an absolute pig! :lemon:

Oh well, the 60's had that really weird narrow dashboard! Besides, Dad probably liked the idea of you driving a pig with a little metal around you at that age. Oink!

Yeah and Elvis dined on peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Speaking of Portland, despite its reputation for health and green living, Donuts are actually pretty popular there. Its kind of neat flying into there when the flight plan has you paralleling the Columbia river with its topography changes part of the way (and its not cloudy!).
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
OK, I'll take a few more. The red Corvette looks like a '58 followed by a Metropolitan (year definitely unknown), a blue '53 Ford, a white '59 Lincoln, a red '49-'50 Chevy convertible (?). Over the roof of the Corvette there's a green '57 Chevrolet headed in with a green & white '57 Ford behind it; parked to the left is a blue '57 Oldsmobile and a beige '57 or '58 Mercury wagon.

On the right side near the '59 Merc is a black '58 Ford and a red mid-50s Willys Jeep Wagon.

re: "a white '59 Lincoln" - I meant '58, but with only this much showing it could be either year.

Andys - Did the '59 Merc you remember have a crack in the windshield???

My Dad's buddy had one, a 2-door hardtop. It had a unique 'crack' at the top of the windshield, kind of a weird upside-down elongated U that he said was caused when he jacked up the front end to change a tire. It was right in the middle of the windshield near the top.....

Nope, not that I remember. I did like the airy-ness and outside visibility afforded by having wraparounds front and rear.

There's still lots of cars in the Portland photo that haven't been spoken for; anyone see the Willys All-Steel Wagon?

I think the white Lincoln next to the '53 Ford is a '58, not a '59 (which had a more square-cut molding on the fender).

    G'day

I'd guess about a 1966-68 Series 2a Land Rover on an 88" chassis. It looks to have been reskinned on bonnet, fenders and doors from an original fire vehicle. The hardtop looks to be original

At the end of the production in 1969, the headlights moved from the position shown to the front guards to comply with various legislative requirements.

Earlier models had a 6v system and the headlights were very watery when coming back from bushwalking in mountain country.

This was from a time when 4wd was done slowly and the trip down the highway was slow and hard work.

The air inlet on right hand side fender looks non original so it is possible that there has been an expedition snorkel fitted previously.

Land Rovers are notoriously hard to date accurately. There were a hue variety of models made, In about 1970, I attended a show where Land Rover had outline diagrams of Land Rovers configured in about 40 different guises.

    Cheers

    Graham

I would guess that, as so many other mods have been made, it's the fresh air intake for a Series III heater, which probably means it has a Series III dash too.

It's also possible that base vehicle is a Series III that has been modded to look like a Series II or IIa. Would really need to see the chassis to verify that though.
