Thanks, that works. Doesn't mean I can recognise it though! Swiss plates, but I'm guessing Italian, poss. an early DeTomaso (Vallelunga?), or if it is Swiss, then a Monteverdi of some sort.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Pretty good guess, it is in fact a mid-60's DT Vallelunga.

    Here's something more pedestrian=>image

late 70's I would guess, maybe early 80's. I'm a little fuzzy on the nomenclature, so not sure if they were calling them GLs at this point.

From the stance, looks like an early AWD model.

    Yeah it's a 1978 GL.

Same body style as the GTO.

The subies back then were 4wd, not AWD.

By the way, Subaru was first to put 4WD on a car platform, and in that car (an earlier 1973 model).

Most people think AMC was first with the Eagle, but they actually came a lot later.

    1966 LeMans.

Most of the 66 LeMans had a triangular Pontiac emblem on the center of the hood and I don't see one on this car.

If it were a GTO, the chrome insignia on the left front grill would read "GTO" instead of "Pontiac."

    Great looking car, btw.

One of my favorite of the era even if it's not a Goat. That car just looks mean.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
You guys are all over the lot :P . It's a '66 LM and I don't know why there's no Poncho triangle on the hood. There's a 326 under the hood.

Not what I would have guessed. Flathead v8, probably the same as my brother's 1950 Ford. You could start that car in 3rd gear without stalling the motor. Torque.

I thought I recognized the Mercury from a Goldenrod Garage ad. I think I've seen it in the print Hemmings...that seller always has stuff like that.

The blue car is a Renault R5 Turbo, c. early 80s...I had a green Tomica Pocket Car version when I was little.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
2990: There's a little voice in my head... it says "Renault Alpine".
But I forget what the story was on these. Except they were pretty hot.

Look at those air inlets behind the door. I believe these things were mid-engined. And I think there's a fairly recent Megane like that, no?

It's definately a curiosity but is it really worth $29.5? At a minimum, the engine bay needs some detailing. Even if it was absolutely showroom, what would you do with it? It would take alot of upgrading before it could be rented out for weddings and proms.
  • strekstrek Member Posts: 14
    That's a French license plate. The car's a 1980's Renault R5.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
It's an R5 Turbo, the mid-engined,fire breathing version of the car known in the USA as "leCar" (Renault 5 elsewhere).

Side note: would love to see that brought over here to the states as a rebadged Saturn -- would make a great showroom companion to the Sky!

We know this as a Tigra, but in UK it's badged Vauxhall, while in Germany and I guess most of Europe it's an Opel. Very nice little car, I just passed one on the way in to the office.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is correct, the US gets the Toyota 4Runner and the other markets get this. The Lexus GX470 is based off this vehicle, arguably it is a dressed up Prado.

About the Land Cruiser/LX470, both vehicles are sold under seperate badges in the Middle East. The new versions with the modified tallights look good.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Yep it's the Opel/Vauxhall Tigra Twin Top with a retractable metal roof.

    image

Retractable HTs are catching on in Europe for small convertible/coupes. Peugeot and others have them as well. I don't know why GM holds on to the Vauxhall name just for the UK, it's not like it has any special lustre or cache.
