Yep, it's a 50s Brit Ford but neither an Anglia nor a Prefect. Hint: it was the first generation of a long-running model name.

Methinks that it is a Consul.

Good guess but it's not a Consul either. Anybody else before Magnette comes in and solves it?

    G'day

I think it is an early Ford Escort from about 1955-1960; not quite the model that we think of today. My recollection is that it was some sort of de-specced model of something else like a Squire.

There is a vaguely similar beast from Hillman in the same era, the Hillman Husky.

A salutary reminder that there is a lot to dislike about British design!

    Cheers

Yup, that's the first iteration of the Ford Escort. Motorbase.com says it was produced thru 1961.

I think it's a Rover, maybe 1968 since it has an added-on side light. Weren't these used as police cars in England???
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Yes it's a '68 Rover, some models of which were in use as cop cars at that time. Anyone want to tell us which model Rover it is?

    2000TC, I believe.

    2000TC, I believe.

Yup, the Rover 2000TC featured a sophisticated twin-cam four in a good handling chassis. At the time it was considered the equal of a BMW 2002 (SOHC 4). Rover might have done very well in the US if word hadn't gotten around that they were poorly made.

69/70 Plymouth Barracuda with the ModTop option.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Correct...called the "Mod Top". I was reading in Classics Magazine that the company contracted to make the top and upholstery material made shower curtains as well---LOL!

This was not a big seller, but sorta kinda collectible now. This would be a case of something being rare for the wrong reason.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
IIRC, there were also mod interiors as well in those years.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It does sort of look like a shower curtain melted on the roof...
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Yep, you're right---that's why I added "upholstery" to the description. I bet it got a little "busy" inside that car.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
If you look at the top on 1970-71 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe, you'll notice a paisley pattern stamped into the material.
  • uplanderguyuplanderguy Member Posts: 16,901
Re.: the Fury Gran Coupe, I always thought it was odd that it was considered an upper-level model, but was based on the two-door post body (a la Fury I and Fury II). I wonder if they just had an excess of that body style laying around and were trying to use up bodies. By '70, Chevy had quit building full-size two-door sedans. Not sure about Ford.

IIRC about that time you could get an AMC Ambassador with similar upholstery. My memory is that they even included throw pillows.

No sharp turns? Looks like a 1953 Nash, but could be a '52.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
We can see in this design how the early 50s have recently bid goodbye to running boards and pontoon fenders.
  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165
    I'll go with 53.

I had a 51. Received it free because it had head gasket failures. Did the best I could on the problem. Again the head gasket failed. Sad.

Yup it's a '53 or '54 Nash Rambler Custom harstop">, the '55s lacked the skirted front wheels but the descendants of this car retained the relatively narrow track and overhanging sides which gave them a rather dated look.

The AMC Ramblers were a good example, this is a '58>

    Fiat 1500 Spider/Cabriolet?
  • grahampetersgrahampeters Member Posts: 1,786
    G'day

I think Fiat but the design definitely looks like a Pinin Farina ponton body. There are echoes of the Austin A 60 and Peugeot 404

    Cheers

Yep it's a Fiat 1500 Cabriolet ca. 1963-65., the immediate predecessor of the 124 Sport Spider. Like the 124, the 1500 Spiders were styled by Pininfaina and bore a strong resemblance to their Ferrari, Peugeot and Alfa-Romeo cousins.

Definitely a black Santa Fe over to the left and Jetta over to the right.
If it wasn't for that big yellow thing I could figure out some of the other cars in the picture ;)

POP QUIZ---and which of these 3 cars is worth $500,000 today? :P
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
I'm surprised the word 'Rambler' is used. I always thought the Rambler name was used on smaller vehicles, like a separate model line. The larger Nash models were Statesman and Ambassador, and this one looks more like a Statesman than a Rambler to me. Oh well, live and learn...
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
My bad, Wgrafer! I had trouble finding the original photo & caption but I just found it again and you are right.

It's a '52 or '53 Nash Statesman Custom. You know your Nashes sir!

One of my favorite 'frog cars" along with the '58 Packard Hawk, the Bugeye and the 2CV.

The guy in that car is HUGE--lol!
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Yep, they used the Dart name everywhere but the USA where Dodge had it sewed up so it was simply the Daimler SP250 here.

That car had the V8 us old sports car guys yearned for but it was just so ugly...

Imagine their surprise at Jaguar when they bought Daimler and found out that the SP250 cost more to make than an E-Type!

  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    Or India perhaps.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
It's Chinese, a 1978 Beijing Jeep, it's probably related more closely to the Russian GAZ/UAZ 469 than to any American Jeep although Beijing Auto had a relationship with AMC and has made Cherokee and Wrangler based models.

Today they're known as Beijing-Benz and make trucks based on the G-Class,
and have joint ventures with D-B. The whole thing's a bit complicated.
