but how can you be positive on the engine? Were there on options that year?

Oh, and it has NAPA brake pads and a new Meineke muffler and X-mas tree air freshener

I saw one on the way to work today.... 2-door.. Red with the white Starsky and Hutch striping...

But, he had it slightly lowered... We all know that isn't right.... You have to "jack up" that rear-end!!

    No options?

I don't recall if a 6 cylinder was offered. I never saw a Torino without the Windsor V8. That sticks beause there was a Cleveland engine plant version that was better but the Windsor version was what that car bought.

Original brake pads would have been Ford's captive (then) company brand, Autolife? Mufflers I don't know. Air freshener is your choice. Probably car exhaust with oil scent or ode of engine fumes leakage, if I recall correctly. All the people who complain about cars from the 80s and 90s and quality missed that one Ford.

True confessions. I had one the same color as this 4-door. 'The wheel covers on that one don't look right and I'm not sure why. They may not be original. Mine replaced some fancy wheel covers that came with it but were so out-of-balance they spoiled the wheel balance. Maybe mine were 92 wheel covers.

if you couldn't order a '73 Grand Torino (BTW -it's Grand Torino, not just a Torino) with the good 'ole small block 302 CID although I'm sure most did have a 351.

    Here's one from the T-top era>>>

It's an '83., though I imagine the '79 is similar.

Yuck.. Every 2+2 Z-car is just jarringly ugly...

Except for the Infiniti G35 coupe.... they finally get it right, and they don't even sell it as a Z-car..

It is, does anyone besides me notice how goofy that spinner looks on
a wheel that clearly is held on by the exposed lug nuts?

How can you tell its an 84?

A relative of mine had one of those when new...I really thought that was a cool car when I was 6 or 7
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,527
A friend of mine had that body style... and his was an '84.... I'm sure it could be some other year.... not sure of the range for that body style...

Really, I should put (?) after all of my guesses.. ;)

EDIT: Now that I think about it... my friend's had the black rear spoiler, where the later models had body color spoilers that were a little cleaner in design.. that Supra may be one of the later models... kyfdx

Oh OK. I was just curious, as I've never really researched those cars.

They made them from 82-85 IIRC. I think they have an enthusiast following still.
  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
Couldn't they have at least put a center cap over the lug nuts?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,527
Straight six.... Toyota's version of the Z-car.. and, by then, the Z-cars were really crappy, and the Supra was nice... I still like them... They are typically rust buckets by now... along with the rest of the early '80s Toyo/Nissan/Hondas..

BTW, the caption sez the Supra is an '86.

I really liked these in the day. I should have bought the Celica GTS version when I got out of college, but didn't quite have the $$.

The Celica was the big 4, and had flip up lights kinda like a 928, where they laid back and pointed to the sky, without a metal cover, IIRC

My folks owned an '84 (or was it an '85?) Celica GT. 4 cylinder with an (ugh!) automatic. Baby blue with blue interior. Bought it used when their experiment with high end luxury ('72 MB 220 Diesel) failed miserably.

IIRC, that design came out in '82 and featured the exposed headlights. My folks' car had hidden headlights - not sure what year Toyota made the switch.

Mom and Dad drove it for quite a number of years - I want to say they bought it in '86 or '87 and traded it in for a '91 Camry in 1993 or so.

Stranded Mom on the highway with a busted timing chain about 35 miles from home. Other than that, it ran like a top for all the years they owned it.

I remember it being very low to the ground and having a tiny back seat - fortunately, it split to extend the rear luggage area.

That's the 2+2 version of the 240/260/280Z. I liked that roofline better than the 2 seaters even if the "back seat" was marginal.

that is the original Civic, japanese model. Probably about a '75,

My sister had a 5 speed CVCC in that color, with "sporty" stripes on it, when they first came out (circa 1975). Neat car, and enough room in the back seat for a 6' teenager!

My local Honda dealer has one (white, automatic) in the showroom, but now I'm thinking it might be a '73, although that seems too early... Anyway, seems tiny next to a new one!

Well sure... .you grab the small bumper model, with the spoiler and everything else, it looks great.. ;)

But, if you put up the picture of the 2-seater, it will blow that one away...

I have to admit, that doesn't look half-bad.. from that angle... and if I squint.. :surprise:

That's a 1974 260Z 2+2. The 240s came only as a coupe, the 280s had the big fat oogly bumpers. I love Z's, but this one has 3 strikes against it - the 2+2 body style, the hideous original wheel covers, and the color. Blech.

My first car at 16 was a 260Z coupe, in that same awful brown. The only good thing about it was that the color blended pretty well with the rust spots. I never could get it roadworthy, finally sold it to a guy who wanted to use it for a Ferrari kit.

It seems to me the colors on practically all those early Zs were awful. The quality and depth of the paint was pretty poor too so even colors like black, red and silver didn't come off all that well.

    I forgot they never had a 24Z 2+2

Met a guy that had one of those when new. I had a Mustang. He took me for a ride in the 240Z. He jumped from the outside lane of a 3 lane interstate to the 3rd lane; I don't think we touched the middle lane. I had no idea a car could handle like that. I understood the Z cult after that. Another was a 396 Chevelle owned by a GM engineer who took me for a short ride on 2nd or 3rd avenue in Detroit and hit 65 or more zipping around. Too much engine for a lighter car. I went back to my 289 Mustang 3 speed shaking.

Oh yeah my best bud had an orange 1970 240Z. In a lot of ways it was a wicked nice car but when the time came I went for a Fiat Spider instead of spending the extra $500 to acquire a 240Z.

I did it mainly because the top went down and it had that beautiful PF bodywork. In the end it turned to rust only a few years before my buddy's Z but it was driven more and kept outside for a couple of years. Still there was no way the Fiat could touch the acceleration of the Z.

The ubiquitous 240Z orange was pretty cool, and I had a 260Z in a light blue metallic with beige interior that I liked a lot. But by and large there were a lot of earth tones, which just don't work that well on a sports car.

    LOL, but NOT!
Read my post again, I'm convinced that under equal conditions (car parked outdoors on street) a contemporary Datsun would rust before a Fiat. The metal on my buddy's Z was noticeably thinner. Almost everything was rust prone back then, even Porsches could be really bad until they introduced galvanized bodies ca. '76 IIRC.

That orange was not very cool IMO, Jason. Not many cars look good in orange, including my (orange)1970 GTO. It only seems to work on Porsches with their top-notch paint jobs. Light Mettalic blue OTOH was certainly one of the best Z colors.

No, I beg to differ. It's a widely accepted fact that the British invented rust, then licensed the process to the Italians who perfected it.

Same goes for the "Intermittent ground".
