Shoot. I wanted to correct you but you got to it first!

In the US anyway, Duettos were sold as 66 and 67s. There was no '68. The '69 was a 1750 Roundtail Spider, not technically a Duetto. The body was the same as the Duettos but mechanically it was closer to the '71-72 1750 Kamm-tail spiders, with the bigger engine and SPICA fuel injection instead of Webers.

Here's a pic of one of the two Duettos used in the movie - later converted into a race car:

Nobody knows what happened to the other car.

Of course the movie cars are not to be confused with the 1980's special edition
"Graduate" (essentially a rebadged 2000 Spider IIRC). It's kinda cool that one of the movie cars ended up as a race car. :D

excitement was hard to come by in the late '70s. According to the ad everything you can see on this car is factory>>

That style Cortina wasn't sold in the USA to my knowledge, I noticed the LHD too, perhaps it's an Export version for Continental sale. :confuse:

    Oh God that is hideous!

No wonder the japanese were able to penetrate the market.

Seems like Pontiac didn't get over this type of "surface excitement" until very recently.

But that's not a Pontiac, is it? It's a Plymouth? I know someone will correct me if I'm wrong (again).

Oh, I know, I'm just drawing a parallel to newer cars that still use that type of "styling".

The car isn't styled at all, it's a boring design, then they tack on all this surface excitement and call it sporty.

Yeah it's a Plymouth, no wonder they put the brand to sleep. Anyone recognize what Plymouth lies beneath all that crap?

Plymouth Volare? My aunt had a Volare wagon for a long time. It had that same front end style. I'll never forget what a nasty looking car that was, pea green with wood grain. It is, however, still running, being owned and loved by a friend of the family. 200,000 plus miles on the original 6 cyl.

it is a Volare. I assume it is a road runner package, but something doesn't look quite right, so it might be a different special edition.

Actually, given the state of the industry in the late 70s/early 80s, a 360ci road runner was probably a pretty hot package, especially with a 4 speed.

Maybe the exterior designer worked for Aztek design?

It's a '78 Volare Super Coupe/360-4v. One ad in Hemmings claims there were only 35 made, another for a different car says there were 494. I suspect the latter figure is correct and it just goes to show, as Shifty likes to remind us, often there's a reason why certain cars are rare.

Definately an early Volvo, not sure of the year. Early 50s, perhaps?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Very early 50s, it's a 1950 Volvo 831. It seems rather large in that photo.

Easy! It's a 1949 Buick Roadmaster. There was a yellow convertible like it in "Rain Man."
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I actually appraised that "Rain Man" Buick....there are two of them in fact. The one I saw wasn't in very good shape anymore.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,691
Did one of those Buicks come from Cincinnati? I heard that somewhere. I know the Seminary used for the home where the Rainman was is in Northern Kentucky.

Most of the exterior shots for that film were done in Cincinnati... Of course, the story takes place there as well... The "home" he was in, is actually a convent in Melbourne, KY... just a few miles upriver from Cincinnati..

They also show the car going across the I-75 Ohio River bridge on an aerial shot...

And.... the bar scene.. where the waitress drops the box of toothpicks... and he counts them on the floor... filmed at Pompilio's restaurant in Newport, KY.. One of my favorite places...

Not as easy as you think, not a Roadmaster, it's a '49 Buick Riviera! AFAIK, the first to bear that name.

    Peugeot 204 Cabriolet?
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Buick used the term Riviera to describe all its hardtops back in the day like Oldsmobile used Holiday and Cadillac used DeVille. I was going to edit my message to include the designation, but I was too lazy.

I remember they resurrected that name after the movie on that Caprice clone in the 90s.

GM sells out the best names on the lamest cars some times. Often, actually.

I used to have one of those (briefly). Parts were unobtanium in USA. Only car I ever saw where the alternator belt made a complete 90 degree turn. This is a FWD car built from recycled Italian TV dinner trays. I was used to 404s and 504s. This car did not impress.

Rain Man Buick -- don't recall where car was titled but somewhere down south, yes. Biggest problem was that the "ears" on the ladder frame (I think there were 8 of them) that are used to hold the bolts that run from frame into the body---were mostly rusted away....so the entire body was held on to the frame with maybe two bolts---also bolted onto rusting ears. So a bit of work there. This Buick had hydraulic windows BTW, which are a devil and a half to get working right. Pretty old thing, though, as long as you didn't own it.

    Fiat X1/9? I'll guess the year, '77?

Those rubber bumpers spoil the front end.

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
It's a '72, Juice. The rubber bumpers were probably left off the Euro versions but were neccessary to protect American-spec cars from the ravages of less than delicate parkers.

This gives 1972-89 as the years for X1/9 production which jibes w my memory of it
coming to the USA in the early '70s to replace the 850 Spider, also bodied by Bertone.

I was going to guess Ford Escort wagon of some sort, but that's taller. It looks like something Ford of europe would produce.

That 6 series reminds me of the scene where Bruce Willis crashed one repeatedly. Anyone remember Moonlighting?
