Did the rear end look different from the US version. The front doesn't have the full height to the chrome bumper, isn't that the difference. It doesn't look right.

Got a picture of a rear end?

The front end of that "pickup" looks like a Volvo 240...

Is that a Toyota Corona turned into a pickup? Possibly an Aussie derived Ute?

Really reminds me of a Falcon Ranchero
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,481
absolutely not a Volvo. Does look like a Carona, or maybe a crown? But in any case, a 1960s vintage ToyoCamino

Yep, the pickup/Ute is based on the '66 Toyota Corona, I've never seen one so perhaps it's Aussie.

First one is an Opel Manta from the mid 70's.

Second one is a Toyota Van from the 80's

Third I don't know, looks like nothing sold in North America, maybe Asian something.

    Opel Manta

I found a photo last night in a book about VWs around the world which shows a Phillipines assembled version of the Australian VW land car, and it looked awfully similar to the white monstrosity, even the rear side window is similar. The book says they made 200 or so, from kits sent from Oz. and judging by the van in the background we could be in Asia with this so I'm going with that??
  • fiatownerfiatowner Member Posts: 75
Its on Japanese plates, and looks like a Japanese couple, so I would hazard a guess it was marketed in Japan, even if they sold most of them in Australia.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,481
darn, I wanted to get that one, seeing as I actually owned a 1975 Manta. I believe the picture one has to be a '74 or '75, since they went aay for '76 (replaced by the imfamous Opel by Isuzu), and the '73 didn't have the bumpers.

Best driving car I had owned to the time (after a string of domestic compacts like the Gremlin and Duster). But, a true POS since '75 was the only year for FI, and my particular car had some issues. Lots of tows and new plugs before it got sorted out. Not too many people knew what to do with FI in the early '80s.

the green van looks like a Previa with a custom rear valance sans bumper.

The Toyo/Ranchero is left hand drive so I don't think it's Aussie.

You brought me memories of the $53 Open Manta I bought in about 1986.
I used it for a semester, and sold the engine to the owner of an Opel GT for $300.

The Toyota is RHD I think, with the passenger holding something - not the steering wheel, but whether Japan or Australia they both drive on the proper side of the road anyway.
  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
My friend's dad has one just like this as his daily driver. Sort of daily anway, it is his only car but he takes the bus a lot. (Hint - he doesn't live in this country).

Skoda from maybe the early 70s - interesting car. The Czechs made the best cars of all those repressed under the iron curtain

LOL, I think you're right there appears to be a small semicircle on the right side and a shadow of same, it's hard to tell. Aren't firearms almost unheard of in Japan?

I think I can make out the Roman letters A and K as well as Arabic numerals 12-00
on that plate so I go with Oz.

Something odd about that Skoda, notice how tiny the two headlights appear?

You are correct. They are supposed to be uber-snow cars. My friends were raised in a very hilly, very snowy part of Slovakia, and they swear by them.

Honey, I stretched the Audi A6.

I'm going to guess that 97 is a Fiat, in Brazil they call models like that the "Furgao", basically for cargo.

Yeah, the long black car is the new Citroen C6, IMO the best looking Citroen since the SM and the DS and a huge improvement over the dowdy C5.

I guess it is a Duster with 340, but I am sure it has a clever name like Feather Duster.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,481
a feather duster was a later, wimpy trim version. I think this is a '70 Scamp, but keeping track of the varient names on these isn't easy. I do like it though. A 340 4 speed is a sweet car.

If it is a Duster, it's not a feather.

...for the Scamp aimed at women. It was to the tune of "The Lady is a Tramp" except it went "That's why the lady drives a Scamp!"

    Is it a Dart Demon?
  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
I thought there was a Gold Duster, but I was just trying to be clever with the Feather Duster. Is there really such a car? My new clever guess will be the Dust Buster, or was that the name of those GM minivans?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,216
I thought it was just the "340 Duster"... :confuse:

I read feather and saw gold. Guess my sense of humor leaves me at work.

The gold duster was a trim package. Scamp I think was a basic model. Thee were a few other Duster variants too I believe. Plus all the DOdge iterations.

Hot dang! Yes you nailed it. Impressive.
  • manifoldmanifold Member Posts: 57
    Yes its an opel manta.

Yes its a Toyota van that goes with a different name depending on which country you're in.

The third is also a Toyota SUV which I think is the FX Cruiser (no its not the FJ) and also quite limited.

    3512 - Isuzu something (Impulse?)

    3513 - Triumph Dolomite

3514 - Lancia something maybe Integrale
  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
Seat is correct, a Seat Inca to be exact.

looks like a lancia delta (rally car)

  • fiatownerfiatowner Member Posts: 75
3512 looks like an Isuzu Piazza but there is something different about it.
3513 Triumph Dolomite Sprint - the M suffix on the registration plate is Aug73-Jul74.
3514 Lancia Delta Integrale but its the full blown World Rally Championship kit so it is very unrelated to the one you could buy in the showrooms - sadly.
  • fiatownerfiatowner Member Posts: 75
The Skoda is a 1000, I think, or at least thats what they sold them here as, but there was a later 1200, which looked similar so I wouldn't be surprised if thats what we have here .
I know this is a car forum not numberplate news but the plate on the Corona 'Camino' is Japanese - different format and dimensions to Aus, and Japanese plates do have Roman numerals on them, but the little symbols above the numbers are the prefecture code in Japanese and Roman, and the little symbol in front of the bigger numbers is a Kanji symbol, from the Japanese alphabet. Sory, but another obsession of mine is numberplates - I even belong to Europlate, which has newsletters about these things!
