yoribe2, you're dealing with pros here. I think between all of us regulars on this thread we can identify almost any make and model car ever made. And no this is not a challenge :P
fintail, I had a matchbox version of a matra rancho as well. I used to collect those when I was a kid, and still have many left.
I went on a spree 5 years ago buying up matchbox cars from flea markets, garage sales etc.
I am very much like you in that regard. I kept a lot of my cars (although I have a little brother, so I lost a few), but I went on a spree and bought up a bunch of 50s era Matchbox, as I always loved them, even when I was a kid and they were still old. Now those are some obscure cars. Should I drive the Austin A50 or the Wolseley 1500? The little things are expensive, too. I also like the old Dinky cars. I've thought about a toy/model car thread, but I didn't know if it would be censored or if anyone else would care.
I'd care.... I grew up on Dinky Toys, which must account for my Eurocentric tastes in cars. I'd give anything to still have my Sunbeam Talbot, MG Midget (looked just like a TF) and the RR Silver Cloud and Jag saloons, not to mention those great British Military vehicles Dinky made.
#3565 is a DKW F89 (1950) Cabriolet, cute lil' thing, innit? IIRC the original Saab two stroker was based on the DKW unit of that era. If it makes you feel any better, I had to look up Hanomag, never heard of 'em before.
BTW, the F89 bears a DKW Shield, and the little bits of chrome are the four rings of the Auto Union as still seen on modern Audis.
OK then, here are some mystery car pics of my own. Some of them turned out better than others - hard taking photos of small objects in low light. The flash creates some reflections - not damage to the cars
Looks pretty stylish for a 49... I'm surprised. Studebaker came to my mind but I had no idea of year. The heavy hood ornament probably wasn't 50s though now that I know a year forit.
I when I look again the front had similarity to the pre 1950 Studebakers. We had a 1950.
Re the Vanden Plas, it is difficult to see from that angle, but it is a V-P 4 litre R, not the 3 litre. The only visible difference is the rear fins, as on the 3 litre they were higher, with vertical tail lights but on the 4 litre R they were lower and the rear lights were horizontal. The two models were contemporary, however. (R stood for Rolls Royce, as they had developed the engine, but it was only used otherwise in a few military vehicles, nothing to do with Rolls Royce cars.)
The V-P is not as pretty as W111, at one time they were planning to change 3 litre and the Austin Westminster - Wolsley 6/110 which shared the boby to the same style of tail from the old vertical fins, but the sales were poor for this version, so the old style kept on going - loads of police cars in the sixties were either Westminsters or 6/110's
re # 3568 - This one got lost in the shuffle- it looks like a Talbot Tagora, but I remember them as being wider - at this angle it looks narrow enough to be a Solara. The Tagora really wasn't a big success despite such great styling (not) and I haven't seen one for years. I think they were introduced 1980, but died by about 83/4 - at least in UK.
re your interesting collection- I am intrigued by the green and grey cars, 2nd row between the Ford Thames van andthe tiny black MBenz in the selection you call "oddballs". What are they? the grey one looks Japanese butI can't make it out. I used to buy Matchbox toys with pocket money in the 60's - I remember them going up from2shillings and 3 pence to half a crown (2/6) which was my earlliest experience of car related inflation- at least they didn't need fuel. I've still got old Dinky/Corgi/matchbox toys but they are not in such good condition - mine look more like they were in a crash and they don't have boxes- most of the large ones don't even have tyres now- and virtually all of mine are still in the attic of my mothers home down in Wales... The pictures brought back many distant but pleasant memories....
nice - Lancia Beta Monte Carlo early 80's - looks like a baby Boxer, but rots like an X1/9.
We knew as the Lancia Beta Scorpion, it was developed by Fiat to succeed the X1/9, would've been called the X 1/20 if they hadn't decided to make a Lancia out of it.
The green car is a Fiat 128 I believe, and the grey one is probably some kind of Simca. Those are EKO HO scale cars from the 70s, and are not marked with any vehicle identification.
Those Matchbox and other diecast cars for the most part were made about 20 years before I was born. I found them very appealing, and accumulated a little collection. Prices are rising for those...I am loathe to spend $30-50+ per car, which many go for nowadays. Even the beaters are worth a little money.
Xsara Picasso. My brother actually owns one of those eggs. I drove it, it's pretty wild. Very wide, and the rear seats come with tray tables like you get in an airplane.
5 speed manual in a van, too. I like the individual seats and the high vantage point.
I love German license plates, cuz they tell you exactly where someone is from.
NY State license plates were like that back in the 60s. If your plate started with AX it meant the vehicle was registered in Allegany County a TS was Steuben County, X and Y was Nassau County, K was Kings (Brooklyn) TK was Tompkins etc, etc.
The registry of that car may be an important clue as to what it is, Steinie.
That's an angle that's not very flattering for what is usually a smooth car. That large chrome hood ridge really looks bad there. The filled body seams really look nice.
I should've remembered that '66 was the first year for the second gen styling on the four-seat Riviera. The allsportauto.com photo of the '66 shows headlamps but they were normally hidden when not on. I can't even make out the rockers in that photo which is rather poor and apparently of aless than pristine example.
The '66 and '67 were nearly identical as you can see. The '65 looked like the '63 only with disappearing h/ls.

Hint: take a good look at the emblem on the hood and what's below the shield. The way the women are dressed ought to pinpoint the era.
