Ding! Ding! We have a winner.

It's a Jeep Surrey, based on the CJ3A, and marketed to resort destinations.

OK, I was stung by being caught pulling a guess out of..., well never mind. Anyway, I have to redeem myself so I will note that to be precise the Surrey was based on the DJ3A, which was the 2-wheel drive version of the CJ3A. So there.

That's what prompted the "same sausage, different length" criticism.

To me that wasn't an issue at all, both looked fine then and aged incredibly well. Heck, both look better than their modern counterparts!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
This is probably wrong but my first gut feel was Saab.

So that's where the Juke found inspiration for the front turn signals! ;)
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,516
It's like a Chinese copycar 356. I don't know what it is, but likely German. Grille reminds me of Borgward, but I don't recall any of those like this.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,516
You have to think 4th dimensionally. Imagine you are in the 80s, with a large income derived from secret sources :shades:
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
No, not Saab - its German
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Borgward is close - but not quite...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, the rear of Saabs from that era drooped down toward the back.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,516
Close to Borgward - something in the Goliath family?
  • bhill2bhill2 Member Posts: 2,603
    I think you're right, Fin.

Yes - its a Goliath. Any guesses on the model - or the coachbuilder ?

    G'day

I was aware of these things but presumed theory were an answer to a question no one asked. Why would you want a 2wd JEEP?

    cheers

  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Oh, a 2WD Jeep would be just DARLING for summer in the Hamptons, or your teenage daughter learning to drive. You could also use it to give your guests a tour of Al's Monkey Jungle, just 4 miles ahead on State Road 50.

Wasn't it the Las Brisas resort in Acapulco that was first famous for shuttling their guests in pink jeeps?

I see a 1963 Chevrolet Impala, Porsche 356, and a 1955 or so Opel Rekord.

    Yep, the 356 is a 356A.

How about the white car parked against the signs past the Impala, and the red fender on the left which belongs to a very familiar car?

Are they still having issues with the Img links? I had tried uploading and the picture shows up in the preview post, but it keeps getting removed in the regular post.

The IMG button is working again.

Usually when that happens to me there's something odd about the link. Try converting the link to a bit.ly or tinyurl.com one and see if that makes any difference. If not, shoot me an email with the link and I'll play with it.
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
could it be a https or http issue. I just noticed the "s" (for secure) on the link.

Maybe; just tried pasting a graphic from my credit card company and it disappeared into the ether. Could just weird stuff in the link, like gaps or underscores confusing things.

Not working trying to shorten the link either.

A snippet tool works though (clipped and pasted to tinypic.com).

I posted the 2 links for the picture.. the 2nd one for some reason cut the link when it should be 1 full line.

About twenty years ago, a Packard friend of mine heard about a warehouse full of cars owned by the son of a Packard/Studebaker/Jeep dealer in Sugar Creek, OH. We called ahead under guise of looking at a car for sale, and went down. That is the first place I'd ever heard of, or seen, a Jeep 'Surrey'. It wasn't as shiny as the one in the picture though. ;)

My Packard buddy was enamored with a '56 Packard Executive Hardtop there, in 'Flamingo'. The Executive was only built from Apr-Jun '56, and Flamingo was also a late color. The car had a power seat, which along with the color made us a think a woman was the first owner.

It was a Goliath SP700 with coachwork by Rometsch. I've seen pictures of this model before but never a real one - they built about twenty of this version I think and there may be two left, although the basic shape was made in better numbers - about 50 I gather.

I'll grab the two in front (in the bigger picture). Front and center is a '57 Ford, probably a Country Sedan. The blue one is a '57 Hudson I think, maybe a Hornet.

It's a 1974 Ambassador. Last year for the Ambassador as AMC soldiered on with just the Matador from 1975-78.

Good job so far, you're batting 1.000. Care to take on the cars behind the Hornet in the "BIGGER" version.

We're still missing two from the Vienna snapshot I posted>

    image

No one mentioned that the red fender surely belongs to a Volkswagen 1200 (AKA Beetle/Bug/Kafir). The white car under the signage is a Renault 4CV. The 4CV was never popular here in the US but along with the Citroen 2CV it put the French on wheels after WW II.>

Well, I didn't want to hog all of the glory (and take all of the risks). Behind the two given before are, clockwise from the left, an early '50s Studebaker Champion (Starlight coupe I think), a '60s flavor Beetle, a '57 Chevy Bel-Air, a Henry J (I think), a mid 50s Rambler American (again I think), and a slice of something black next to the Hudson that I haven't a clue about. My monitor and/or eyes aren't good enough to pick up the ones across the street

I think you've nailed all that ones that can be nailed. The two-tone car across the street looks like a '55 or '56 Chevy but it could be something else and behind it appears to be a '57 or '58 Olds or Buick.

The still is from Mad Men, a treasure trove of automobiles from the 50s and 60s.

    G'day

Well, you learn something new every day! Apparently Renault 4CVs were assembled in Sydney from ckd kits and were reasonably strong sellers from about 1949 to 1962. They were sold as Renault 760s or 750s. I have no recollection of them in contrast to the remarkably successful Peugeots of the same era, which seemed bullet-proof and were much loved by rural Australians.

    Cheers

    G'day

There were a raft of British kit cars in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of them looked ill proportioned but this was one of the few that worked. It was a Ginetta based on a Hillman Imp. Ginetta were still in operation when I lived in the UK in the 1990s but I think it went bust at some time and may have had a resurrection in some new owner's hands.

There was a tax saving in buying a kit and bolting it to second hand parts. Chassis from Minis were especially popular

    Cheers

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Yup, the car shown is a 1973 Ginetta G15 which was indeed Imp based and powered by the 875cc Imp engine. Ginetta cars are alive and well and still producing cars for road and race. Not surprisingly their website is at www.ginetta.com.
