An interesting effort...ahem.....a bit busy as we say in the styling world.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,419
Wow, I would have just about fallen over, or went nuts trying to take a pic before it passed by. Heck of a sighting.

We all should get dash cams.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,107
A dash cam would have been VERY handy. But other times, maybe not having everything recorded is better...

    G'day

Well I am guessing Italian and with curves like that, maybe Gina Lollabrigida!

This is a Fiat 1200 - I think it was the 1200TV for that model. About 1957/8. I have seen a couple of them in the past but I don't think many of them would have been sold in the UK - and I don't know if they did a RHD version. Very pretty car though.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,107
Interesting chrome band at the rear fender, like a '50s Eldorado. But what's with that odd dent in front of the hood scoop?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
yes, the "TV" stands for Touring Veloce. I have only seen one of these, a badly rusted version that still sits in a hoarder's garage, awaiting its final destruction sad to say. The advert for this beauty says it can do an honest 90 mph. I would love to have this car.

Chrome band, WW tires and wraparound windshield, that's a very Yank looking Italian.

    G'day

Rear end looks European and sort of inspired by some PininFarina designs. Front end, from this angle, looks American. White walls scream American and maybe early 1960s.

    However streetscape suggests European.

    No idea at all.

Would I sound stupid if I said they are both Triumph TR3. The coupe was called something like the Italia and is a Michelotti design. Far more attractive than the convertible

Background definitely suggests Europe. It looks sort of Peugeot-ish to me.

That's right Graham, both cars are based on the Triumph TR-3, the red one is a standard 1959 TR3A, but the silver hardtop is a Michelogtti styled re-body, a 1962 Triumph Italia 2000 .

Giovanni Michelotti acted as the in-house designer for Standard Triumph (later BMC/ British Leyland) after opening his own studio in 1959. He copied the side andrear of the Italia 2000 in his design for the TR-3s successor, the TR4. This sort of thing was common during that era.

    See next post for more.

Those finlets of course were copied from America 50s styling. Ironically they became popular across the Atlantic about the time they began to disappear on Detroit Iron.

I like how the wheels and tires combine against the body of this Dodge Polara station wagon. Simple, yet effective relief!

Studebaker Lark.....no, REALLY. (look at the hubcaps closely).

    Designed by Frua

It's a concept car, so not really fair for our "Mystery Car" rules.

I guess everybody gave up on my export market Mopar. Au1994 came closest - it's a Brazilian 1979 Dodge Diplomat.

Did you really have to do that, Shifty? From the side it looked almost normal. That is, even if it couldn't be unseen, one could still lead a normal life. Now I will need therapy.

"Frubaker" as in Frua? As in Carrozzeria Frua? Oh well you can't win 'em all. I like most Frua designs but I guess there's just so much you can do with a Lark.

Oh well, I recovered from seeing the '61 Plymouth and the Pontiac Aztec so I guess I can overcome this.

Ah yes, Juking. The uncontrollable ocular spasms and psychological blindness caused usually by looking at vehicles such as those mentioned above. Other vehicles (a 1958 Buick in one documented case) have been known to trigger the syndrome.

I want to say that's some sort of late '60s, early '70s Mercury.... it reminds me of my first car (1970 Galaxie Coupe).

You're closer with the Galaxie brand. Spot on with the year - 1970.

Beats me... really. I bought mine in '76 with a 113K miles for $650. After putting $300 more in it over the next six months, the engine died, and I scrapped it for $100.

I think it's a Galaxie XL. In between the regular crappy Galaxie that I had, and an LTD.

Comes with those nifty hidden headlights and the badges and sporty interior

Actually, the LTD is a Galaxie (500) with more luxury, and the XL is a Galaxie (500) with more "sport" (note the thin shell bucket seats and the console). For instance, there were no four door XLs during that period (trivia question; in what year was the last four door XL offered). So there isn't a straight line between the three models.

I want to say the only 4 door XLs were 63-64 - and they are fairly rare today. LTD came out in 65 and probably filled that market segment better.
