Anybody on the car towing the boat?

That's a tough one, from that angle it looks like a 1970s US Ford LTD or Fairmont but that's not likely so I think perhaps it's a British Ford Granada or its German equivalent.

Right make but wrong model. Sorry - didn't mean to do that.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
The make was easy, that thing screams boxy Ford but I'm not good on Euro Fords

Hmm RHD, flying A on the hood, it's gotta be a late 50s early 60s Austin

That's, an Austin A90 "Westminster", isn't it?..... 1955-ish.... Rather grand name for it, what?

According to the picture description, it's a '1957 Meteor Rideau 500 Victoria 4-dr' with an unfortunate 'Continental kit'...

    Don't be fooled:

That rear end is where your personal security rides along, right? B)

Looking at that car, I just thought of something. Does that rear wheel need to be moved or removed in order to get into the trunk?

IIRC, the rear wheel tilts backwards to get to the trunk.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
Yes - it is an Austin A90 Westminster. The Westminster name was on prewar Austins (so was Cambridge) and was one of their largest models then, while the 50's Westminster was the largest of the mass produced Austins (there was a Princess above that - but that was more formal).
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
    This one is more obscure

  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Now that 57 is over the top US or Canadian :D
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
    It's a Canadian Mercury Rideau Victoria 4D, 1957 of course---just a bit overdone perhaps?
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,439

Anybody like this? Raise your hand.

It doesn't qualify for our "contest" because it's a one by Pinanfarina, but I thought it was an interested re-do of a 1955 Mercedes 300b. They never made a coupe in this model. This was a show car, and still exists but with 2-tone paint. MB people either like it or hate it.

  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I suppose you could be nice and say it looks a bit like a Bentley with a MB grill, but I think you can also compare it to a Fifties Detroit greenhouse slapped onto a Mercedes. As I recall back in those days Pinanfarina did styling for Nash and I think some Chrysler back in those days also. Personally, given the era I don't mind it.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
It does improve the usual Mercedes frumpy styling of the 300 sedan but I can't say it captures the beauty of the 300Sc coupe.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,462
I definitely like that two door, hardtop maybe?. The style goes well with the Ponton era. Not as pretty as the close-coupled 300S/Sc, but not exactly homely either.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
I kind of like it. It does look more like Bentley than a Benz.

Eh. Very much Rolls style in my eye. I will never understand huge stately coupes. I mean, awkwardly climbing into the back seat while your driver holds the door open for you would be quite the site at the country club, no?

The sedan platform on which that coupe was based was also a big stately thing:

The white car - I can read the plate, so I will guess it is a Bentley Mulsanne :) . Maybe a Turbo badge behind the front wheel? A Turbo R or later Brooklands would look very similar, too.

  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
My little coupe seems to have slipped by.

The numberplate is Austrian (which is a real clue).

The other clue is it has Italian origins....
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,462
Austrian, must have some kind of Steyr or Puch connection.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
Yes - it is a Steyr Puch but this particular car is unusual as they usually made modified Fiat 500s etc.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
If you get this one I'll be quite surprised. I'll give you a little hint. The car has a vinyl top and that was actually a factory option on this model.

My Steyr Puch was an Adria TS - they made about 100 in 1961-3. It had a Fiat 700cc engine - but unlike the usual modified Fiat 500s etc this one had a unique body...
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Boom! Gold Star for lostwrench. Mercury and Ford also came out with equivalents. This was because Ford was caught flat-footed by GM's 2-door "pillarless" hardtops. They were called the Mercury Monterey and the Ford Crestliner in the year........? 1949 !

    Doh! I didn't notice that plate. Er yes it's a 1989 Bentley Mulsanne S

With a permanently attached tow rope nicely looped around the back bumper?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
    Maybe it's a plug-in?

Yes, a T&C but I'm sorry I don't know the year of this one. I think one way to tell is whether the inset panels are real mahogany or not.

One would guess the acceleration of that tank would be leisurely at best.
  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165
    OH, PLEASE!
    Take off those stick-on reflectors.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
When I think of the stick on reflective red sticker thing, the car that really comes to mind is the 1960 Ford. I seemed to see many of them back then with that tape filling the bumper impression that was kind of a reverse taillight. But heck, back in those days many station wagons had tourist stickers and decals all over them as well, so maybe that reflective tape thing wasn't so bad after all ;)
