Can you guess the approx year?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,477
Really hard for me to tell, I will guess 1967.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481

Toss this one onto Graham's desk. It is photographed in the Australian Outback.

Extra points if you can ID the tractor.

I'll guess it's a Ford tractor (I was hoping it was a Porsche).
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I'd guess Case or IH with the red. For some reason I thought Ford tractors were blue, Allis Chalmers orange and Deere green. But I really don't know much about tractors.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,126
You're probably right. Old Ford pics are gray and red.

I spot a Ford Anglia 100E with multicolored paintworked parked at right. The two tone powder blue and black car at left appears to be a rarity, Fiat 2100.

It's so rare I've never seen one but I looked at some pics and you are certainly correct, it's a Fiat 2100 ca. 1960. I think the gray sedan to it's right is one of the best selling Fiats of that era, a Fiat Millecento (1100 in American). These were sold all over the world from 1953-1969. They changed the grillework every decade or so.

A version of the 1100 was made in India until 2000, branded as the Premier Padmini. Some are probably still pulling taxi duty there.

Oh nice Mercedes---220S Coupe? Maybe late 50s car? The year must be...what? 1965 or 66?

Yup, it was taken at LAX in '65 which would make the yellow Mustang behind the Split Window VW Bus and possibly the yellow Falcon brand new. The Ponton-fendered Coupe is either a 220S or 220SE (W180/128). I'd guess the latter so 1958-60MY.

Plenty of other cars to ID so have at it.

If the picture was taken in '65 the Falcon is indeed brand new; it's a '66.

Now that you mention it the Mustang looks like a '66. There's no visible horizontal bar in the grille as you'd have in a '65>

Don't forget '66 MY models would have debuted in September 1965.

Cool pic, a Ponton coupe in the wild is a rare sighting at any time.

I'll pick off the 55-56 Coupe DeVille in the background.

LAX - the airport is designed like a horseshoe, terminals on the right, parking on the left...or some such on the info channel ;)
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
That maroon Mustang is the same shade of maroon as the 67 a high school buddy put into a creek bed way back when B)
  • iluvmysephia1iluvmysephia1 Member Posts: 7,709
It's the '65 Mustang's that don't have the horizontal line in the angled metal piece on the side. And the 1964 1/2 Mustang has no angled piece of metal at all. The '66 has the horizontal slashes across the angled piece of metal. I know, the '65 Mustang was the first car of mine. Oxidized metallic purple paint, great radial tires and nice wheels. 4-speed stick 6-cyl 200 c.i. engine.

There is a '63 reddish Pontiac Grand Prix in the back of the photo.

car is an MG (thanks, badge. haha), and I believe that is Mr Shelby.

    An MG-TC?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Yep, a TC with one of Mr. Shelby's first rides. It's a 1949. They only made them RHD.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
IIRC, Ole Shel's first race win came behind the wheel of the MG-TC

Getting back to the LAX photo, I don't think anyone has called the two Caddys that are visible. Just above the roof of the Merc 220 you can see a tan 50s Coupe with a reddish/brown roof. I think it's a 56.

There's also a dark colored sedan w stacked lights to the right of that red Grand Prix. Cadillac went to stacked headlights in '65 (but it could also be a '66).

Those wheels are aftermarket American Racing, right? Or knockoffs of them?

Right Fintail, the R100 was Mazda's first rotary sold in the USA, the second sold here by anyone (the NSU Wankel was first).

Yup, those look like a style made by American Racing in the early days of alloy wheels.

Arrrgh! I gave everyone about 4 hours to keep me from possibly making a fool of myself. It looks to me like the Mercury of the early '50s that was actually introduced in '49. The thing is, I have a friend who had a '50 model, and it had button release door handles. These look like the pull type. I am going to stick my neck out and say it's a '49 and the button handles were introduced in '50. Am I Sherlock or am I his pet goat?

Yup, it's a 1949 DKW 1000 Universal. The terms Universal or Kombi
were used by German makers to designate what we call a station wagon.

The two-stroke motor used in the DKW 1000 was adopted by Saab to power their 92 and 93 models.

Yeah, pre-war, painstaking nut and bolt restoration of an incredibly rare truck---someone really wanted it, and they WILL have the only one at the concours, that's for sure.

Kind of a piece of American history there.

why, that must make THIS ONE worth at least $35,000 then!

Ok, no answer on this one.
It is a '37 or '38 Chevy. (Holden)
Both years had the three ribs on the roof.

    RE: Mercury Wagon---my source says it's a 1950, but I really can't say that's 100% correct.

Well I wasn't expecting an answer on the truck in the desert---that's impressive that you figured it out.
  • bhill2bhill2 Member Posts: 2,602
Hmmmm. I wonder if they used different handles on the wagons because of the wood. I hadn't thought of that. Of course, it's also possible that I remember the year of my friend's Mercury wrongly, it's been a long time.
